SYLLABUS
I) FOR GROUP-I SERVICES PRELIMINARY EXAMIANTION:
(OBJECTIVE TYPE) GENERAL KNOWLEDGE
The paper on general knowledge will include questions covering the following fields of
Knowledge:

General science current events of national and international importance.

History and culture of India.
Geography.
Indian polity.
Indian economy.
Indian national movement and freedom struggle.
Mental ability tests and other related fields.

 Questions on general science will cover general appreciation and understanding of

Science, including matters of every day observation and experience as may be
expected of a well educated person who has not made a special study of any
scientific discipline.
 In history, emphasis will be on broad general understanding of the subject in its
social, economic, political aspects; social and cultural heritage of India
emphasizing unity in diversity.
 In geography, emphasis will be on geography of India including the physical,
social, economic geography and on the main features of Indian agriculture and
natural resources.
 Questions on Indian polity and economy will test knowledge on the countrys
political, executive, judicial system, panchayat raj, rural and community
development and economic planning in India.
 Questions on Indian national movement will relate to the nature and character
of the nineteenth century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of
independence.
 General mental ability test will include analysis of classified data, logical and
behavioral reasoning, analogies, school arithmetic, and numerical ability.
 Basic concepts of computers.
 Current events will include latest developments on all the fields detailed above
including science and technology.
 History of Tamil Nadu its ancient culture and heritage of its people.

Modern history of India and Indian culture will cover the broad history of the country
from about the middle of the nineteenth century (advent of European Invasion) and
would include questions on Gandhi, Tagore, Nehru and periyar. General mental ability
will include statistical analysis, graphs and diagrams. It covers exercises to test the
candidates ability to draw prudent conclusion from information presented in statistical,
graphical and diagrammatical form pointing out deficiencies, limitation and
inconsistencies therein. On role and impact of science and technology, question will be
asked to test the candidates awareness of the latest developments in science and
technology with special emphasis on applied aspects.

Indian Polity and emerging political trends across the world affecting India will
include questions on Constitution of India and political system in India and the political
system of the countries which affect and have a bearing on our nation. Under Geography
of India, questions will be put on the physical, economic, social geography of India.
Under Tamil society and Culture, questions will be asked to test the candidates general
awareness on those topics. Under English language, writing and comprehension skills
will be tested through questions on essay writing, comprehension of a given passage and
summarizing the substance of a given passage through prcis writing. The candidates
have the option to choose either Tamil Language or English language on this topic. Tamil
Nadu administration will cover topics in general administration like organizational
structure, functions, control social welfare oriented programmes etc., to have an overview
of the administrative pattern of the Union questions will be put to the candidates.

Current events will include and cover general appreciation and understanding of
science, history, politics, economics, agriculture etc., including matters of everyday
observation and experience. Current economic trends will include questions on Indian
Economy and impact of global economy on India. Questions will be put on Planning in
India, industrialization, economic growth, impact of population explosion, financial
control measures to streamline the overall growth, trends in global trade, socio-economic
problems will include questions on literacy rate, unemployment, child labour, gender
imbalance, woes of agrarian sector etc.,

TNPSC Group I /CSSE Group II ways to win the Exam

should

study

the

syllabus

and

the

list

of

books

recommended and reckon how much time (s)he would require to study them to
get ready for the examination. For that (s)he should draw up a good time table.
Candidates already employed should spend around 4 to 5 hours a day to prepare for the
examination. Those who are free should spend around 10 to 12 hours to prepare
themselves for the ensuring examination. A good workable practical time table should be
drawn up for the purpose.
Guide Lines:
Candidates will do well to consult and talk to those who had taken the
examination in the years 2007 - 2008, 2008 - 2009 and 2009 - 2010 and get their
valuable suggestions, guidelines and practical tips to win. Their experience
besides showing us the way to win will also reveal the reasons why some failed.

How to study
First the candidates should study the school text books. The questions in the examinations
are of objective type and so they should avoid reading the questions first. First they
should read the school text books units by units. Then they should mark the right answer
for fill up the blanks; choose the right answer from the choices given. For short question
the relevant area in the printed text should be marked.
Studying the above with care, concern and responsibility they should go to the objective
type questions in the notes.
Practicing previous year question paper and model papers it is very essential. Take
a model paper and practice it daily with the time limit and value the paper you self,
find the mistake and rectify it. Practice makes a man perfect
How to Prepare Notes
The

candidates

should

have

separate

long

size

note

books

for

various

subjects like history, Geography and science. As and when you read the points in
the units they should be noted down in the note book unit wise. The note book
should have 1/3 portion margin even portion margin, for when they read
further books they may get new points, good illustrations and explanations.
They can be incorporated against the point already recorded in the note book.
Recalling
To recall is difficult to many. It causes much concern and anxiety to many. There is an
easy way to develop the art of recalling. It is 24. 7. 6. The 24 stands for hours 7 for days
in a week and 6 stand for months. It means one should revise the lessons learnt once in 24
hours once a week and once in 6 months. This is the key to remember things well and to
recall them easily when needed.
If we get 12 hours a day for learning we should break it up as 3 units each
of 4 hours. Each units of 4 hours should be devoted to each subject. Morning is
the best time to learn the difficult subject like science. The easy ones may be
learnt in the evening. The subject which is neither very difficult nor very easy
may be studied at night. If one spends all 12 hours studying one subject that she

could cover one subject quick will not be a good idea for it will be boring causing
mental fatigue which prevents the mind from receiving and remembering the
thought idea. The wisdom of the wise saying adage variety is the spice of life
proves this point.
When they allot 4 hours for a subject they should study for 3 hours and spend 1 hour to
revise what has been learnt.
Once a week we should revise the lessons learnt during the 7 days. It will help them to
remember and recall what has been learnt. We should complete the study 15 days ahead
of the examinations. They should revise the studied lessons during the 15 days and try to
remember them.
Continuous study without intermittent revision and recall will lead to easy forgetting
what counts is not how much we have studied but how much we remember.
Discussion
Two times a week the candidates will do well to discuss the lessons learnt for about 3
hours. The group may consist of 3 to 5 likeminded candidates well motivated to win
through discussion to dispel doubts to clarify and to conceptualise the thoughts.

Discussion is doubly blessed and beneficial. It clears doubts and helps to communicate
their thoughts crisply and to the point. This in turn will help to communicate well during
the interview.

Writing Model Examinations

The aspiring candidates will do well to write model examinations and evaluate them
among themselves as a way to face the real examination. The question papers of the
previous TNPSC examinations and those model papers given in the guides will be useful.

Importance of Coaching Centers
The candidates from the rural areas think and estimate that they cannot
completely cover and study the syllabus 15 days ahead of the scheduled date of
examination. Again they have no companions to form study and discussion
group such students can complete the syllabus by joining the coaching centers in
Chennai.
The coaching classes should conduct number of examinations. By writing them the
candidates get good training in writing the examinations. Here they get the like minded
motivated peer groups for discussion. Again they can clear their doubts in the classes
handled by trained faculty members.
Physical Exercise /Yoga
It is advisable for the candidates to do physical exercise and practice yoga for 30 minutes
a day.
They should do either of these and not both, guidance form an expert is needed for that.
Such practice in physical exercise or yoga refreshes the body and mind and helps the
concentration on the lessons.
Training the Mind
The wise saying is A sound mind in a sound body. So training of the mind is also
needed. We should avoid all negative thoughts, Positive thoughts will keep the mind
healthy when thoughts are good the words and deeds also become good. Such a state of
purity will aid concentration in work. The candidates should ward off anger, anxiety, fear
and envy from conquering the mind. A constant daily vigil of the mental Hygiene will
contribute to success Stress Management.
Life today is full of stress and strain leading to anxiety and tension. The
candidates should be guarded to keep a calm mind under all circumstances.
They should learn the art of dealing with all problems in public life. Quite calmly
never getting excited or emotional only a stress free mind can concentrate on the
study. A stress free state of mind should be practiced much early to facilitate a
success at the time of interview. The time available after the written examination

will be short for the interview. Such short period will not be sufficient to train a
stress free mind for the interview so the training must start early.

Friends Group
The Candidates must mingle with friends. Such friends who will encourage and will give
an optimistic outlook of hope to win.
Festivals / Travel / Picnic / Excursions
During the serious period of preparation it is advisable to avoid festivals, travels,
Excursions and picnic as they will affect the intensive study and concentration. We
can reserve them for the relaxation and rejuvenation after the examination.
Food Habits
Candidates should keep the body and mind healthy fit alert and agile for long hours of
work. Good deity habits are needed for the same. The food they take should be simple but
nutritions and fiber rich. They should carefully avoid such items of food which do not
suit them well. Digestion will be facilitated by taking in liquids in the form of butter milk
and lender coconut.
Every day counts during the preparation for the examination for hard work. Good food
items along with correct and timely intake will keep them healthy for the work.
Sleep:
The candidates should sleep for 7 hours a day. The anxiety to complete the lessons should
not lead to keeping awake long and reducing the needed 7 hours of sleep. For the lack of
sleep will spoil health and endurance for sustained examination work.
Other Tips
The candidates taking up the examination are on the increase. The competition is much
so they have to cover the syllabus on time and write model examinations for sure
success in Group I & CSSE Group II. This situation demands a full time study. So
the candidates in employment should take leave to prepare for the examination.

Parents on their part should not expect that their children after completing degree course
will automatically get employed. They have to provide all help to their children to
periods ranging from 6 months to one year to prepare for the TNPSC examination. Then
only they can expect their children to pass these examinations which demand long
through preparation with full concentration and good motivation.

Begin Today
There is an old Tamil saying Do one thing that too a good one, start it
today. Begin right now. This golden rule applies well for preparation to the
TNPSC Group I & Group II examinations. Dont Post pone it to the next day set
your mind on the task. Develop the determination and the Ulysession will to strive, to
