Ash with Vermicast as a More Effective Organic Fertilize than Ash with
Chicken Manure in Terms of Increasing the Growth Rate of Tomatoes in Silliman
Farm.
Thesis:
Although there are several factors in organic fertilizers that contribute to the
growth rate of tomatoes, it appears that ash with vermicast is more effective than
ash with chicken manure in terms of increasing the growth rate of tomatoes in
Silliman Farm.
Introduction:
Organic fertilizers are fertilizers that are derived from living organism. There
are different organic fertilizers but the most common ones are Ash, Vermicast, and
Chicken manure. Vermicast is an organic fertilizer that came from the feces of
african night crawlers and earthworm. Chicken manure, as the name implies it
comes from the feces of chicken it can either be layer or broiler. In this study we are
going to compare the growth rate of tomatoes using ash with vermicast and ash with
chicken manure.
I. Availability of vermicast in the market.
A. Vermicast is taken from the feces of African Night Crawler and Earth
worm.
B. Vermicast is sold in different Agrivet Stores (Agricultural and Veterinary
Store).
II. Convenience of using vermicast as organic fertilizer
1. Vermicast can be use directly after it is harvested since it is
already decomposed.
2. Vermicast usually has little to no odor at all.

3. Vermicast contains all essential elements needed by crops for

development. This includes the essential elements and traced
elements.
4. Vermicast contains all the essential element and traced elements
that is readily absorbed by crops.
5. Vermicast contains substances that increases microbial
populations.
6. Vermicast contains substance that adds biologically active
metabolites such as plant growth regulators (auxins, cytokinins
and gibberellins) needed by plants to grow.
III. Convenience of using chicken manure as organic fertilizer.
A. Chicken manure Nitrogen content can reach up to 4%.
B. Chicken manure are produced in high amount since chicken manure is
harvested on a daily basis.
C. Chicken manure contains high amount of calcium that is needed by
tomatoes to prevent Blossom End Rot.
IV. Refutation of the Opposing view point.
A. It is not usually sold in the market because of its odor and high level of
heavy metal
B. Chicken manure nutrients is not in readily absorbed form, it needs to be
decomposed in order to convert it into nitrate (N3) to be absorbed.
C. Chicken manure nutrients cant be use till next cropping since it is needed
to be decomposed first which usually takes for about 3 months to 1 year.
D. Chicken manure can experience rapid nitrogen loss without the aid of an
inorganic fertilizer know as Superphosphate.
E. Chicken Manure can burn crops if applied if high amount compared to
vermicast which can be applied in any amount.
F. Its high level of heavy metal can cause phytotoxicity and can harm the
health of the one whos gonna eat it.

Conclusion
Although there are several factors in organic fertilizers that contribute to the
growth rate of tomatoes, it appears that ash with vermicast is more effective than
ash with chicken manure in terms of increasing the growth rate of tomatoes in
Silliman Farm. This is because vermicast has readily absorbed nutrients available
when compared to chicken manure. Chicken manure might contain high amount of
nitrogen necessary for protein synthesis, but during fresh harvest it cant be use
directly and usually take 3 month to 1 year after.
