EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

By Paul Cambra

oe and Paula McHugh have been crisscrossing the country for years, bringing their show,
Green Fields of America to the heartland
and all that surrounds it.

But the stories they tell are not from the road; at
least not the highways and byways of the 21st
century. No, the stories they tell are ones that
have ben passed down through the generations.
Call them legends, call them lore, call them tall
tales if you will.
Joe and Paula call themselves The Time Travelers, and their show will take you on a journey
from the 13 colonies to the 1930s when the dust
bowl and depression sent folks on yet another
westward migration.
We dont gloss over history, Joe McHugh said.

FIDDLING WITH IMAGERY

Paula McHugh met Joe through the old-time music community. She was involved in square dancing; he played the fiddle. He was also on the road
a lot with his storytelling act.
When we got together, I didnt want to be left
alone all the time so I learned to play the banjo,
she said.
That was 25 years ago. Apparently they didnt
need a courting dulcimer to test their compatibility. But they do play one now.
The courting dulcimer, you play it together,

Paula said. One plays melody, the other harmony. Its a way people courted. You play together
to see how well you got along. If they play well

The whole idea of time travel, we think this stuff
isnt really gone, its sort of still around, Joe said.

wonderful time and everyone kept saying are you
going to do it again this year?

And though the ARD Spring Hop is a 21 and older event, that didnt stop the demographic from
skewing young.
The great thing about last year was that there
were just as many young adults as old, Prowant
said. And it was the younger dancers who won
the dance contest. Even for young people who
dont dance that much, just see how much fun
you have when you get out there.
So remember cats and chicks, if youre looking

Well theyre back, and so are dance instructors

Arny Messersmith and Billie Prowant, who will
lead a one-hour lesson in East Coast Swing right
before the hop begins.
Its the easiest dance that I can teach, Messersmith said. Lessons dont require a partner as we
rotate to give everyone a chance. I would say in
an hour well have you dancing.
He said East Coast Swing has about 20 steps, as
opposed to West Coast Swings 200. But with East
Coast, you throw your partner in every direction
and that takes up a lot of floor space. But theres
still enough room for the Auburn Outlaws roller
derby team to get around.
They were all over the gym floor last year, zooming in and out of people with trays on their shoulders, Messersmith said.
Those trays held food and drink the local Lions
Club will be cooking hot dogs and brats and
the Outlaws will serve as car hops. There will be
a swing dance contest and a hula hoop contest,
poodle skirts aplenty, and Frankie and the Fabletones will provide the music.

Mike Amaral, in car, founded the California Beach Boys because he liked their

So who better to head up a tribute to the Southern California ambassadors of surf and sun?

We were escorted on stage by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Amaral said.

I had always wanted to do either a Beatles or

a Beach Boys tribute band because I love them
both so much, said Mike Amaral, who founded
the California Beach Boys close to a decade ago.
So two of my cousins and I decided to go with
the Beach Boys.

There are six band members and Amaral handles

the Mike Love role as lead singer. He has played
music professionally since he was 14, but took
a break at age 22 to raise a family and pursue a
steady career in law enforcement. He returned to
the stage in 1995 with an oldies band, Flashback,
but the surf sounds beckoned

while the Beatles are famous for their three-part
harmony, the Beach Boys sing in four-part, and
that requires a lot of practice.
We have charts taken from the originals and we
all have our assignment, Amaral said. But you
have to have guys that not only like the Beach
Boys music but are willing to put in the time to
work on the harmonies.

all of their concerts at the San Jose Civic Center.
And some of his current audience members may have
been there too. At least thats what they tell him.

Trouble is hes only 38 years old, Amaral said.
But theyll gladly live with those mistaken identity moments as long as they get to keep playing.
They are three cousins and three close friends and
they get along really well. Maybe more so than the
originals.
Weve got all-white guitars and champagne sparkle drums and the vertical striped shirts, he said.
People love that clean look. Its all about the appearance and the showmanship. When we come
out people clap, they like the way we look. We got
stripes in light blue, dark blue, red, pink, hot pink
we change them throughout the show.
The typical audience covers a wide range of ages,
both young and old music fans seeking good vibrations. Wouldnt it be nice to be a part of it?

And then theres Belly Laughs.

A belly dancer was looking for space to teach
one night a week, Betsaida said. We thought
how fun would it be to merge them together?
Now, once a month, belly dancers take the stage
while the improv performers watch from the
wings. Then its their turn to entertain.
One guy started shimmying and shaking, trying
to get into skinny jeans and be a part of the fad,
Betsaida said.
Improv is all about the inspiration. Be it the moves
of a belly dancer or a shout from the audience, all
the performer needs is a jumping off point.
The Shorties get ideas from the audience,
Burke said. From a location like the beach or
Starbucks or a feeling they had today, a line
of dialogue or a text message, we will use those
within the scene. We just focus on creating in the
moment. Every show is totally different.
The 7 p.m. show is for families, guaranteed to be
clean. The 8:30 show, well, they dont try to be
blue, but they are making this up on the fly. They
use a rotating cast of performers, usually eight to
10 on any given night.
Its a really diverse group and really, they usually
find us, Burke said. They come through our
classes, like Teen Playground. More than anything,
we love having a team of people who share a
same mindset.
Audience participation at The Shorties is
encouraged, but not required. They promise they
will not pick on anyone who chooses just to sit
back and enjoy the show. But you may want to
offer a suggestion should they get stuck.
And you will get stuck, Burke said. When it
does happen you breathe through it. You think I
have to be funny, I have to be clever, but thats
how you get stuck in the first place. Slow down,
listen to what was said last, respond to it and it will
all be good.

his catalogue and you hear country, rock,
honky-tonk, swing, mariachi, Tex-Mex, bluegrass
and rhythm and blues even a bit of Hawaiian.
He even invented a double necked guit-steel,
allowing him to play and switch between electric
guitar and lap steel guitar on the same instrument.
Then theres that voice, a deep baritone and a
style that harkens back to an earlier era clean,
honest and un-ironic like the music of George
Jones or Ernest Tubb, who Brown has often been
compared to in style.
Brown, 62, will bring his act to The Center for the
Arts in Grass Valley near the end of this month.
We had a chance to talk with Brown and we asked
him how he got to be a country music star.
WERE YOU EXPOSED TO A LOT OF COUNTRY
MUSIC GROWING UP?
Not really. My parents liked classical and I was
mostly raised on that. I watched the TV and thats
where I got into that kind of music.
WHY DO YOU THINK YOU WERE DRAWN TO
COUNTRY MUSIC AS OPPOSED TO THE POPULAR MUSIC OF THE DAY?
I was drawn to popular music at the time. I remember when the Beatles hit and then the bands
that followed. Thats what the teenagers at school

would be talking about. I kind of discovered Ernest Tubb on my own watching the TV, I never
told any of my friends as I dont think it would
have gone over too well.

Oh, its the same take Ive had on it since the

late 60s. Everybody talks about what their idea
of country music is and everybody has a different idea. Country music can mean anything now.

No, they are two complete and different

as I sing. I am basically doing the part of three

Put a little foot pedal down there on a bass drum and I

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN FILMS AND TELEVISION?
People who are fans ask me to do it. Vince Gilligan

Gilligan did Breaking Bad and is now doing Better

Well I didnt play on the show; they aired it right
after they finished Breaking Bad as a promotion for
something. It wasnt a theme song to the series; Vince
had actually wrote it with three of his friends. A very
well-written song, written with me in mind; I was very
flattered by that. We just got back from the premier in
L.A., did the red carpet, played the party and showed the
movie. It was a lot of fun.
SO WHAT SHOULD YOUR FANS EXPECT WHEN
YOU PERFORM AT THE CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Oh, a unique experience I guess. I mean I just do
my own thing and if they havent seen me before
they will be pleasantly surprised its original. I am
bringing a full band, including my wife, who plays
rhythm guitar.
