When you come to Napa, you come for special wines; the Stags Leap District is the
heart of Cabernet Country, and Baldacci Vineyards produces some of the best to be had
anywhere in the Valley. The winery estate was founded in 1997 when Tom and Brenda
Baldacci settled on their seventeen-acre Silverado Trail property with an eye toward the
Cabernet Sauvignon vines which would grow on its hills; in 2001, the 7,000-square-foot
production cave system was added in the hillside behind the tasting room under a
volcanic knoll. The estate vineyard has since been added to with the acquisition of a
twenty-three-acre Carneros vineyard in 2003, planted with the intent of matching grape
varieties to the right location for Chardonnay, Gewrztraminer, Merlot, Pinot Noir and
Syrah. In 2013, Baldaccis production expanded again with the purchase of the 8.5-acre
Stella Vineyard, planted to Cabernet Sauvignon at the base of Diamond Mountain.
That desire for the viticultural best is reflected enologically in every bottling of Baldacci
wines. Known for affordably excellent Cabernet Sauvignonsthere are multiple
bottlings, the single-block Brendas Vineyard, the Black Label ambassador blend of
various estate blocks, and the IV Sons, which has estate Cabernet Franc blended in to
create a more rounded Cabernet expressionBaldacci Vineyards also produces Ruppert
Cabernet from Coombsville and a range of Carneros wines, including the Sorelle
Chardonnay, the Elizabeth Pinot Noir, and the Frederich Gewrztraminer (all named in
honor of family members); theyve released a wine, too, their Harmony Zinfandel, which
benefits music programs with each sale.
Winemaker Rolando Herrera has applied his philosophy of small-batch fermentations,
dividing each vineyard into many blocks and then fermenting them separately, allowing

JUDDS HIL
Personal, Intimate Wines
from the Southern Silverado Trail
BY JOSH STEIN
34
Judds Hill is owned and operated by two generations of the Finkelstein family.
Bunnie, Judd and Holly Finkelstein have been making wine in the Napa Valley
since the 1970s, and in that time, they have seen worldwide recognition and
demand for their releases take them to producing many tens of thousands of cases
before making the deliberate decision to sell their first winery, Whitehall Lane,
south of St. Helena, and limit their annual production to less than three thousand
cases total a literal drop in the bucket of Napa Valley wine providing much
more hands-on control of every facet of each release.
Starting again on a fourteen-acre Howell Mountain vineyard and winery
designed by Judds now-deceased father, Art the first of the new releases was the
1989 Cabernet Sauvignon. Because of Arts reputation as a fine winemaker, many
grape growers began approaching him to make small quantities of wine to
showcase their fruit quality. Soon, wine enthusiasts from throughout the country
were having him produce small lots of customized ultra-premium wines for them,
thus creating the Custom MicroCrush business in 1992 and allowing folks to
realize the dream of having their own wine made for them without having to own a
winery. In 2006, construction was completed on a new winery located at the
southern end of the Silverado Trail, designed to make working with clients easier,
to make the winery as green as possible, and to create an intimate tasting salon for
visitors to sample the range of wines made in very small quantities but from some
of the Valleys, if not the worlds, greatest vineyards.
Given the special space amongst the Valleys growers within which the winery
operates, there are lots of wine options to taste, with none made in very large
quantities: Cabernet Franc; multiple Cabernets Sauvignons, including reserve and

More than 90% of the wines are from the highly anticipated 2013 vintage
The Napa Valley Vintners invites wine enthusiasts and collectors to
preview the one-of-a-kind, limited production wines that will be
available at Premiere Napa Valley in February 2015. Created solely for
the Premiere Napa Valley portfolio and produced in quantities as
small as 60 and never more than 240 bottles, the wines will be sold
exclusively to members of the wine trade during the nonprofit trade
associations annual barrel tasting and auction. Descriptions of the 225
lots can be viewed at premierenapawines.com
For Premiere Napa Valley, every winemaker crafts a blend that is
truly unique from all of the other wines they produce, notes Michael
Scholz of the St. Supry Estate Vineyards and Winery team that is
chairing the 2015 Premiere Napa Valley Steering Committee. The
barrel they create is the only barrel of its kind making Premiere Napa
Valley one of the rarest wine brands in the world.
Though reminiscent of how Hospice de Beaune wines are
produced, the process is uniquely American. For example,
winemakers might use a grape variety they would not normally bottle
as a stand-alone wine under their own brand. The grapes may be
sourced from a specific part of a single vineyard, or the wine might be
aged using a unique barrel regime not regularly employed by the
winery. Some of the most novel offerings are produced as joint lots
multiple vintners who collaborate to create a blend exclusively for the
Premiere Napa Valley brand.
The wines are offered as futures at the auction only to licensed
members of the wine trade for resale to their customers and ultrapremium wine collectors. Each bottle is hand-labeled, individually
numbered and signed by the winemaker, similar to a limited edition
work of fine art.
The Premiere Napa Valley barrel tasting and auction on February
21 is the culmination of a week rich in wine tasting and educational
and professional networking experiences hosted by both the NVV and
the vintners who have crafted the wines. Now in its 19th year,
Premiere Week, as it has come to be known, is an annual
homecoming for trade and media to spend intimate time with Napa

Best Winery in Napa award for 5 consecutive years in the Bay Area A-List.
2012 Winery of the Year by Connoisseurs guide to fine wine.
Founded in 1992, today Frank Family owns 380 acres of the finest vineyard land
in Napa Valley and has one of the biggest word-of-mouth followings in the wine
country. First constructed as the Larkmead Winery in 1884, the historic stone
building on the property was refinished with native sandstone from the nearby
hills in 1906. The massive stone edifice is considered one of the finest structures
in the Napa Valley; it appears on the National Register of Historical Places and is
listed as a Point of Historical Interest in the state of California.

After 135 years in Alexander Valley, and founded as the twenty-ninth bonded winery
in the state of California in 1880, Geyser Peak has shown it knows how to grow and
produce award-winning, internationally-recognized Sonoma County wines for a long
time. The key is not to forget that growing great grapes in the right spots requires yearround attention to detail, and the goal is the same today as it was in the Nineteenth
century: create top quality wines of distinction. This has meant combining the best of
Old and New World techniques, and the results have been many Winery of the Year and
Top Winemaker awards.
The several dozen wines produced annually span a gamut and are organized by tiers.
The California Series offers award-winning, budget-conscious bottlings of Cabernet
Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon
Blanc. The Appellation Series is an expression the various AVAs spanning Sonoma
County, including Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, Alexander
Valley Chardonnay, and the Tectonic red blend from Geyser Peak Mountain itself.
The limited-release wines found in the Winery Series are a true expression of unique,
lesser-known varietals in small-lot bottlings of under 150 cases found only at the
winery; releases include two Cabernets from the Ascencia and Kuimelis Vineyards in
Alexander Valley, Walking Tree Vineyard Petite Sirah, rarely solely-bottled Petite Verdot,
the Thermopoli Red Rhone Blend, Sandy Point Vineyard Syrah, and even a Tawny Port
in 375ml bottles. Last but certainly not least, the Reserve Series presents Reserve
Cabernet, Reserve Alexandre Meritage and the new Devils Inkstand Cabernet, each
blended via an expensive and time-heavy barrel-by-barrel process.
To afford greater access to these releases, the winery opened a new tasting room and
production facility just outside Healdsburg not long ago. Its wine country barns sit on

Wine lovers, near and far come to MacPhails tasting lounge for two reasons: Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay. With more than 20 years of experience producing small batch varietals, James
MacPhails passion for great wines is proudly on display at the Barlow.
The Barlow in Sebastopol is a contemporary urban center, bringing the best winemakers,
food producers and artisans to share their local Sonoma County culinary delights with you.
The tasting lounge gives off a fun and trendy vibe, showcasing a 40 foot sculpture made of
welded red wagons designed by Napa artist Richard Von Saal, his interpretation of MacPhail
wine being poured from a bottle. Von Saal designed the Tasting Lounge using only recycled,
repurposed and reclaimed materials.
Once inside, MacPhail Family Wines offers an array of seated tastings in an open spacious
and relaxed setting. Guests can now experience one of the most unique tastings in the wine
country. The Terroir Tasting, a pairing of soil and wine, is meant for wine enthusiasts interested
in learning the nuances found in an award-winning fine Pinot Noir or Chardonnay, such as the
2012 Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast and the 2012 Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast, both receiving high
marks from either Robert Parker or the Wine Enthusiast.
Winemaker James MacPhail created a Soil Wall in their Tasting Lounge showing 8' cross
sections of four vineyards Toulouse, Pratt, Sundawg and Mardikian, under glass in their Soil
Room. Here they discuss the four key components to James wines Soil, Clonal Selection,
Vintage and Winemaking Style. Everything you wanted to know about winemaking is bottled in
this wine tasting experience. The fee is $30 per person, with one fee waived for every three
bottles purchased.
In addition, MacPhail Family Wines offers the Monthly Cheese Maker Series, a tasting where
every month a different local cheese maker is selected to provide an assortment of fresh artisan
cheeses to pair with their menu of wines. For $20 per person, the tasting includes nibbles of
fruits, nuts and breads from local farms and bakeries. Reservations are required.
Come and immerse yourself in a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay loving world, a tasting
experience like no other!

2015 is the year of wine education and Walt Wines has taken the
reigns in the study of stunning Pinot Noir. Their new educational
course, the Appellation Exploration, is hosted monthly in their quaint
tasting room, located just off the Sonoma Plaza. Between January and
June, six Appellation Exploration courses have been scheduled for
guests to take an in depth look at Walts various Pinot Noirs, as well
as Pinot Noir from wineries located both locally and abroad. Each
course has a special theme and a different host, allowing the
experiences to stand on their own or build off each other if guests
wish to attend more than one. As Pinot Noir continues to gain
popularity with wine enthusiasts, critics and winemakers, Walt
Wines Appellation Exploration course has quickly become a highly
sought-after, premier tasting experience that stands out amongst the
plethora of wine education opportunities in wine country.
The first Appellation Exploration course was held on January 8th
and hosted by Walt Wines Tasting Room Manager Thrace
Bromburger. The theme of the first course in the six course series was
Appellations 101. Bromburger began the course with conversation
about terroir focusing on how climate, soil and elevation affects
Pinot Noir grapes differently across the appellations of the wines
poured for the course. Six wines were featured from appellations
along the Pacific Coast and each wine was made with fruit from a
single vineyard from that appellation.
For Bromburger, who has been working in the wine industry for
nineteen years, Pinot Noir has always been a favorite varietal of hers,
and it certainly shows as she passionately walks the class through
tasting each of the six wines. The unique flavors across appellations
and the small production of these wines make this course a very
personal, exclusive experience. Guests interact and discuss the wines
while learning about each appellation and vineyard site, and can
compare and contrast aromas and flavors as they taste through the
wines.
Comparatively, each Pinot Noir exhibits unique flavors, despite the
fact that Winemaker Megan Gunderson keeps the winemaking
process and oak regime practically the same for each wine. This really
speaks to the importance of appellation designation, vineyard
designation and terroir. Guests experience firsthand, by tasting
though single vineyards Pinot Noirs, that individual vineyard sites
create specific flavors, textures and ranges of depth that are quite
distinguishable when tasted side by side. An opportunity to taste six
single vineyard Pinot Noirs from various Pacific Coast appellations
does not come around every day, so it is no wonder that wine
enthusiasts are flocking to the Appellation Exploration courses at
Walt Wines.
The remaining five courses are scheduled as noted below. For
more information, visit www.waltwines.com or call (707) 933-4440
to inquire about the remaining Appellation Exploration courses.

Coro Mendocino
Established in 2000, Coro is the only American example of
winemakers coming together to set standards for a class of wines to
represent a particular wine region. That region is Mendocino County,
a diverse area that encompasses a variety of climates and soils, and
boasts a mixture of multi-generational winemakers with deep Italian
roots alongside newcomers with extensive and varied backgrounds.
Coro means chorus in Italian, and it represents the crafting of the
Mendocino terroir into wines that sing on the palate.
Every Coro wine is a signature blend, individually crafted in
Mendocino County from 100 percent Mendocino County grapes, in
strict accordance with the Coro Mendocino bylaws. Each Coro wine
must lead with between 40-70 percent Zinfandel and may be blended
with up to nine named varietals, honoring the Old Italian field
blends of Mendocino. Every bottle is held to strict protocols, and
must be aged at least one year in the barrel and one year in the bottle,
followed by blind-tasting by the winemakers before it can be deemed
a Coro wine.
