GENERAL
SECTION INCLUDES
The Contractor shall provide all labor, materials, equipment, and appurtenances as
shown, specified and required to furnish, install and test all monorail hoisting
equipment, including but not limited to monorails, trolleys, hoists, motors,
electrical supply and control systems.

Where monorail hoist systems are installed in NEC Class I, Group D,


Division 1 or 2 hazardous locations, provide spark-free mechanical
equipment and electrical equipment and appurtenances that are UL, Inc.
approved for use in such areas.

1.05

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

A.

Hoisting equipment shall comply with the safety and specification standards of
ASME B30.11, ASME B30.16, and ASME HST-4.

B.

Hoists and trolleys shall be specially designed, constructed and installed for the
service intended. All features necessary for satisfactory operation and functioning
of the hoisting equipment shall be provided, whether or not they are described in
these specifications. Hoists and trolleys shall meet the specific requirements of
the Detailed Specifications.

C.

The hoisting equipment manufacturer shall design, furnish, shop test and
supervise the installation of instrumentation and controls, coordinated to function
as a system, providing and accepting appropriate signals to start and stop the
hoisting equipment as required for safe, trouble-free operation.

D.

All parts of the mechanisms shall be amply designed and constructed for the
maximum stresses occurring during fabrication, installation and continuous
operation. All materials shall be new. All parts of duplicate equipment shall be
interchangeable without modification, and all parts subject to wear shall be of
standard pattern and easily replaceable without the necessity of special cutting
and fitting.

E.

The hoisting equipment systems shall consist essentially of trolley, hoist, motors
and push-button control stations.

F.

Each unit of hoisting equipment and monorail shall bear an inscription, easily
readable from the operating floor, showing the rated capacity of the equipment
and control identification. All appurtenances, caution markers and appliances
necessary to satisfy applicable safety laws and codes shall be provided.

G.

The monorail beam shall be as shown on the Contract Drawings and shall be
provided with all necessary supports and appurtenances.

H.

The equipment shall be designed and manufactured in accordance with the codes
and standards listed herein. They shall be considered an integral part of this
specification and shall govern the design, fabrication, testing and inspection of
equipment, except as otherwise shown or specified herein.

I.

All hardware for mounting of motor drives and control panels shall be Type 316
stainless steel.

Submit the following Working Drawings and other data for approval in
accordance with Article 4 of the General Conditions.

information, materials used and methods of fabrication.

Motor Tests and Data: For each motor submit a certified motor test data
sheet or a certified motor data sheet from an electrically duplicate motor,
in accordance with General Specification 16221.

14.

Operation and Maintenance Manuals.

15.

Reports:
a.

All shop test and field test reports.

b.

All manufacturers site visit reports.

16.

Comprehensive schematic diagrams showing wiring for each individual


item of electrical equipment and all interconnecting wiring; the latter to be
clearly indicated as to be furnished and installed by others, if such is
applicable.

17.

The manufacturer's instructions on installation procedures.

18.

Documentation for instrumentation and control system items furnished


under this Section shall conform to the additional requirements specified
in the Detailed Specifications.

Submit the following for record purposes only:


1.

Calculations for sizing of all beams including supports, sealed and signed
by a New York registered Professional Engineer.

Certification by a New York registered Professional Engineer stating that


the design of each hoist system conforms to the applicable standards and
codes and is as specified.

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND QUALIFICATIONS


Manufacturer Qualifications:
1.

Manufacturer shall be a member of the Hoist Manufacturers Institute


(HMI) and the Monorail Manufacturers Association. Provide proof of
membership, or demonstrate that the standards and experience required for
membership are possessed, all to the satisfaction of the Engineer.

2.

Equipment furnished under this Section shall be a standard product of the


manufacturer and shall conform to all recommendations of the HMI,
unless otherwise specified.

3.

The manufacturer shall have a minimum of five (5) years experience in the
design and manufacture of equipment of the specified size and type.

All equipment provided under this Specification shall be obtained from a single
supplier or manufacturer who shall assume full responsibility for the
completeness of the system. The supplier shall be the source of information on all
equipment furnished regardless of the manufacturing source of that equipment.
DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A.

Major structural components shall be prepared for shipment in accordance with


the carrier's specifications. All other components, push-button control stations
and loose pieces shall be skidded, crated or palleted to the carriers specifications.
Further, all skids, carriers and pallets shall be enclosed in water-tight plastic
wrapping, 6 mil minimum thickness.

B.

Master shipping list shall be supplied showing the quantity of each section,
subassembly, or piece, the piece number and the drawing on which each
subassembly or piece is detailed.

C.

All equipment shall be prominently marked for identification in assembly. The


part identification shall be stenciled conspicuously on large pieces of equipment.
Small parts shall have a metal tag wired in place with identification stamped or
etched.

SPARE PARTS, TOOLS AND SUPPLIES

A.

Deliver all spare parts, tools and supplies with the equipment neatly boxed,
indexed and tagged with complete information for use and reordering.

B.

Provide the following spare parts for each monorail hoisting system:
1.

One replacement parts kit and one operating coil for each main contactor
installed.

2.

One complete set of linings for each type and size of brake.

3.

One replacement set of all collector shoes.

4.

One complete replacement wire rope, complete with swaged end fittings
for each hoist.

5.

Pendant plus cable assembly for each hoist, packed in a portable and
lockable steel or fiberglass container.

6.

One complete set of push-button inserts for each push-button station.

7.

Parts shall be completely identified with a numerical system to facilitate


parts inventory control and stocking. Each part shall be properly
identified by a separate number. Those parts which are identical for more
than one size shall have the same parts number.

C.

Motors: Provide electric motor spare parts in accordance with General


Specification 16221.

D.

Tools: Provide standard and special tools and supplies necessary to service,
disassemble, repair and adjust the equipment.

Motors shall conform to the requirements of General Specification 16221 and the
following:

Enclosure shall be TEFC and motors rated for severe mill duty.

MOTOR-DRIVEN TROLLEYS
General:
1.

Motor-driven trolleys shall be compatible with the hoist assembly and of


the type indicated in the Detailed Specifications.

2.

The trolley wheels shall be compatible with the furnished monorails and
shall be supplied by the monorail manufacturer.

3.

Trolley shall conform to the requirements of HMI-100.

Construction:
1.

Trolley shall be fabricated from standard structural steel plates, channels


and angles. Frame shall be adequately braced to resist deflection under all
dead, live and impact loads in all directions.

2.

Frame shall be precision machined to accept the hoist and traverse


mechanism without shimming or selective fitting.

3.

Provide restraining lugs on trolley to limit drop of the trolley to 1 inch or


less and preventing rotational movement in all three axes.

4.

Attach load bars to yokes in such a manner that all wheels will stay in
contact with the operating flange at all times.

5.

Wheels:
a.

Trolleys for hoists rated 2-ton capacity or less shall have a


minimum of 4 wheels. Trolleys for hoists rated higher than 2-ton
capacity shall have a minimum of 6 wheels.

b.

Each wheel shall be removable without removing the trolley from


the track.

c.

Wheels shall have hardened treads, minimum Brinell Hardness of


400 to 450.

d.

Wheel bearings shall be precision ball or tapered roller bearings


with minimum L-10 life of 10,000 hours and permanently grease
lubricated.

e.

Wheels shall be true and concentric to within 0.005-inch runout.

f.

Drive wheels shall be matched in diameter to within 0.001-inch per


inch diameter, or 0.01-inch, whichever is less.

Trolley Drives:

Motorized trolley drives shall be equipped with single speed or variable


frequency drives as indicated in the Detailed Specifications. Variable
frequency drives shall be in accordance with General Specification 16262.

Brake shall be magnetic release disc type as follows:

Integrally mounted to the motor.

c.

Set at 50% of rated drive torque.

ELECTRIC HOISTS
General:
1.

Hoists shall be suitable for the application and for the trolleys and
monorails as specified.

2.

Hoist drive shall include a direct-coupled motor, solenoid brake, geared


train with inherent load brake, motor brake, built-in load limiter, hook,
wire rope, bottom block, load sheave, adjustable limit stop and drum.

3.

Lift: As required to meet the clearances shown and indicated in the


Detailed Specifications.

4.

Hoist Lifting Speed: Single or two speed as indicated in the Detailed


Specifications.

Construction:
1.

Type: Electric wire rope hoists.

2.

Duty Class: H-3 HMI-100.

3.

Motor size shall be as required by the Detailed Specifications.

Gear Train:

Conform to applicable AGMA Standards.

b.

Drum gear shall be nitrided.

c.

Housing: Aluminum alloy, suitable for rapid heat dissipation.

frame, to prevent rope bind or pinch.

Wire Rope:

Material: Type 316 stainless steel

Strength: The rated load divided by the number of parts of the


rope shall not exceed 20 percent of the nominal breaking strength.

Magnetic Load Brake:

D.C. rectified disc type, or AC multiple disc type, self adjusting


and rated for 250% of motor torque.

Provide motor brake separate from the gear housing for rapid
cooling.

Enclosure: Totally enclosed, dust-proof, weather resistant.

Mechanical Load Brake:

The mechanical load brake shall be capable of holding the full load
independent of the magnetic load brake.

Type: Automatic Weston-type multiple disc.

The mechanical load brake shall control the load acceleration


while being lowered.

d.

Wear compensation adjustment shall not be required on the brake.

e.

Lubrication: Oil bath.

f.

The mechanical load brake shall be mounted on a separate gear


train shaft.

Hook Block:
a.

Hook shall be standard design, forged steel, with safety latch,


sufficient for the rated load.

b.

Hook shall be supported on an anti-friction thrust bearing allowing


360 degree rotation of the load.

Sheaves shall be forged steel, supported by medium duty,


permanently lubricated and sealed roller bearings. Minimum
sheave diameter shall be 20 times the rope diameter.

Protective Devices:
1.

Overload Cut-off: Provide overload cut-off to protect the hoist against


lifting heavier than rated load. The cut-off device shall interrupt the
raising circuit to the hoist motor and reset automatically when the
overload is removed.

2.

Limit Switches:
a.

Provide geared upper and lower limit switches for each hoist.

b.

Provide a back-up weight activated upper limit switch.

ELECTRIFICATION
General:
1.

Provide system with all necessary junction boxes, trolleys, festoon track,
bends, brackets, joint kits, two arm kits, stops, supports and mounting
hardware required for a complete installation.

2.

Power supply shall be provided by NEC Type SO cable.

3.

Starters and variable frequency drives, where required, shall be supplied


with the hoisting equipment and mounted locally. Starters, VFDs and
enclosures shall conform to the Division 16 General Specifications.

4.

Provide a suitable number of conductors for power, control and


grounding; sized to carry the required current to all connected motors
when operated at rated conditions.

5.

Give special consideration to clearance, headroom and load approach


requirements in designing layout of electrification. System layout shall
permit full travel of the equipment.

6.

Cables shall not interfere with the operating equipment.

7.

Electrification equipment shall be as required by the Detailed


Specifications.

Festoon System for Electrification:


1.

Festoon system shall consist of neoprene-jacketed, multi-conductor flat


cables with separate control and power conductors. Cables shall be
suspended from trolleys mounted on a heavy-duty C-track parallel to the
hoist monorail. Track and trolleys shall be non-sparking construction.

Provide cable lengths equal to 110 percent of the required length in order
to avoid over-stressing.

3.

Multi-conductor cables shall be minimum No. 16 and be stranded for


flexing operation. Include minimum 10 percent spare wires in each cable.

4.

Cable: UL Listed flat cables rated for 85 amps @ 40EC, minimum.

5.

Loop Length: 5'-0" max.; storage: 4'-0", max.

6.

Provide all assembly and mounting hardware of Type 316 stainless steel.

7.

Festoon cable shall be comparable to Types ST and STO flexible cords for
insulation and rating.

Trolleys: Provide one towing trolley and standard trolleys as required:

adjacent wall

Tow cables, strain relief cables and components shall be stainless


steel.

Track:
a.

Provide Type 316 stainless steel diamond track of suitable size and
strength for support of the cable and trolleys.

b.

Provide arm and tow rope assembly for proper spacing of trolleys.
Tow rope assembly shall include polyamide rope, thimbles and
rope clamps.

c.

Provide adequate track length for bunched trolleys on service end.

Cable Reel Electrification:


1.

Provide cable reel system consisting of multiconductor power and control


cable and cable reel to maintain a consistent pull on the cable to prevent
sagging.

2.

Cable reels shall be weather-resistant, self-winding, spring operated, and


explosionproof construction.

3.

Cable reels shall have swivel bases.

4.

Cable reels shall have roller outlets.

5.

Hardware shall be Type 316 stainless steel.

CONTROLS

A.

Hoist Limit Control: Provide upper and lower limit switches. The upper limit
switch shall stop the hoist motor and activate the holding brake when the load
hook reaches its upper limit. The lower limit switch shall activate the holding
brake when the load hook reaches its lower limit.

B.

Contactors: Each magnetic control shall have contactors sized for the specified
class of service. Reversing contactors shall be mechanically and electrically
interlocked to prevent line-to-line faults and shall be provided with automatic
reset thermal overloads for the hoist motor.

Pendant Control Station:

The motion control push-button actuators shall spring return to off.

2.

Pendant control station shall be mechanically supported to protect the


electrical conductors against strain. Provide sufficient cable to reach
within 4 feet of the operating floor. The function of each push-button
actuator shall be clearly marked and shall indicate the direction of
resultant motion.

3.

The maximum voltage in the pendant control station shall be 40 VAC.

Maximum Allowable Stress: 20 percent of ultimate strength.

2.

Impact Factor: 37.5 percent of rated load.

3.

Maximum Deflection: Span/800.

4.

Maximum ratio of span to width of top flange: 50 to 1.

5.

Minimum width of bottom flange: 4.5-inch.

6.

Position loads for worst case loadings for stress and deflection analysis.

Bottom tee of monorail track:

Tensile Strength:

Monorail track shall be high carbon steel, raised tread, patented track.

C.

Tracks shall be straight with continuously welded sections and factory prepared
ends. Welding shall be continuous submerged arc.

D.

End stops shall be bolted and moveable. End stops shall be capable of
withstanding the impact of a fully loaded hoist traveling at maximum speed.

E.

Holes for splices shall be factory drilled.

F.

Tripping bars for limit switches shall be Type 316 stainless steel and shall be
attached with Type 316 stainless steel hardware.

G.

Provide a suspension system connected to the building structure as shown on the


Contract Drawings. Suspension system shall provide suitable support and bracing
for all live, dead and impact loads.

2.08

MANUAL CHAIN HOISTS AND TROLLEYS

A.

Hoist Drive: Chain hoist shall be driven through gear trains with all operating
parts totally enclosed. Gears shall be carried on anti-friction bearings and operate
in an oil bath or with grease lubrication.

B.

Hoist Brake: Provide a mechanical brake only as described in Paragraph 2.04B.8.

C.

Hoisting Chain (Load Chain): Hoisting or load chain shall be steel chain,
accurately pitched to pass smoothly over all load sprockets without binding.
Chain shall be welded link chain meeting the requirements of the NACM Grade
28 or single loop weldless chain meeting the requirements of NACM No. 6001.
Chain shall be coated by hot dip galvanizing. Remove excess metal at welded
chain joints for proper fit into the chainwheel pockets. Remove burrs and sharp
edges. Chain shall be suitable for bare-hand operation.

Proof Test: Provide load chains which have been proof tested by the chain
or hoist manufacturer with a load equivalent to at least one and one half

times the rated load of the hoist divided by the number of chain parts
supporting the load.
D.

Operating Wheels and Chains: Provide operating wheels equipped with swinging
chain guides to permit rapid handling of the operating chain without gagging the
wheel and to permit a reasonable side pull on the chain. Operating chains shall
hang approximately 3 feet above the operating floor. Provide hooks on which to
hang the operating chains when not in use.

Electroplating: Operating wheels, guides and chain shall be electroplated


with zinc.

Trolleys: Trolleys shall be plain, manually pulled/pushed type, constructed as


described in paragraph 2.03B.

Appurtenances: Provide chain guides, guards and chain storage container


attached to the hoist and/or trolley. Equip hoist with an overload cutoff to prevent
lifting loads greater than the rated capacity.

ANCHORAGE DEVICES

A.

Provide anchorage devices in accordance with General Specification 05092.

B.

Furnish anchor bolts and nuts of Type 316 stainless steel, of ample size and
strength for the purpose intended, sized by the equipment manufacturer. Anchor
bolts shall be hooked and provided for direct embedment during placement of
concrete.

Provide brass or stainless steel nameplates for all systems and component
subassemblies in accordance with General Specification 15076. Include at a
minimum the following information:

Manufacturer and model number.

2.

Date of manufacture with all pertinent ratings and operation information.

Certification stamp or label for all applicable codes.

SHOP PAINTING

A.

Clean and prime coat ferrous metal surfaces of equipment in the shop in
accordance with the requirements of General Specification 09900.

B.

Finish paint ferrous metal surfaces in the shop using the manufacturers approved
standard finish system. Finish system shall be compatible with the primer
specified in General Specification 09900 and the Detailed Specifications. Motors
shall be painted in accordance with General Specification 16221.

C.

Coat machined, polished, and non-ferrous metal surfaces and similar unpainted
surfaces with corrosion prevention compound which shall be maintained during
storage and until equipment begins operation.

D.

Stainless Steel: Do not paint stainless steel.

SHOP TESTS

A.

Test the hoisting equipment in the shop for static and dynamic loads in
accordance with manufacturers approved testing protocol.

B.

Certified Shop Tests

PART 3
3.01

1.

Certified shop tests shall be performed in accordance with General


Conditions, Article 12 - General Electrical and Mechanical Requirements
and General Specification 16221 - Electric Motors. Certified shop tests
for instrumentation and control system items furnished under this Section
shall be performed in accordance with the requirements of General
Specification 13401.

2.

Shop tests shall also be performed in accordance with the requirements of


ASME B30.11.

3.

Shop load test certificates shall be submitted prior to equipment delivery.


EXECUTION

INSTALLATION

A.

Install monorail hoist equipment in complete accordance with the manufacturer's


printed instructions and the approved shop drawings and in accordance with the
Detailed Specifications.

B.

Furnish and install all required lubricants for initial operation.

FIELD PAINTING
Provide field touch up painting of scratched or damaged surfaces, using primer,
intermediate and finish paints provided by the manufacturer, in accordance with
General Specification 09900 and the Detailed Specifications.
FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A.

Manufacturers Field Service: Furnish the services of a qualified representative of


the monorail hoist system manufacturer as set forth in the Detailed Specifications.

B.

Reports: Submit a report from the manufacturer of each visit to the site. Reports
shall provide complete information on time, schedule, tasks performed, persons
contacted, problems corrected, test results, training, instruction and all other
pertinent information.

C.

Field Tests: After Contractor and the Engineer have mutually agreed that the
equipment installation is complete and ready for continuous operation, Contractor
and a qualified field service representative of the manufacturer shall conduct a
running test of the hoist and its controls in the presence of the Engineer to
demonstrate that the hoist and its controls will function correctly.

Preliminary Field Tests:


a.

Field test the hoist unit together with its controls. Tests shall
demonstrate that each part and all parts together function in the
manner intended.

b.

Prior to applying electrical power to any motor driven equipment,


the drive motor shall be rotated by an external source to
demonstrate free operation of all mechanical parts.

2.

Final Field Tests: Perform load tests in accordance with CMAA standards
and the NYC Building Code requirements.

3.

Contractor shall provide all necessary instruments, labor, tools, and


materials to conduct the field tests.

4.

In the event that the Contractor is unable to demonstrate that the


equipment meets the requirements of the above described test, the
deficient equipment will be rejected and Contractor shall adjust and/or
modify and retest the equipment as often as necessary to meet the specified requirements.
