Cooperation Jackson, the New Afrikan Peoples Organization, the Malcolm X Grassroots
Movement, and the Jackson Peoples Assembly are proud to host the Commemorative
Weekend for Jacksons late Mayor, Chokwe Lumumba. The Commemorative Weekend is a
celebration of the life and legacy of Mayor Lumumba and an affirmation of the ongoing
work of the organizations and institutions - the New Afrikan People's Organization,
Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, the People's Assembly, and Cooperation Jackson - that are
continuing to advance the collective vision of self-determination, social liberation, and
economic democracy that Chokwe Lumumba dedicated his life to.

Cooperation Jackson

Cooperation Jackson is an emerging network of cooperative enterprises and institutions. The


mission of the organization is to build a vibrant solidarity economy in Jackson that democratically
empowers working people and builds community wealth and equity. Cooperation Jackson was
founded in 2014 in honor of the late Mayor Chokwe Lumumba and to serve as an instrument to
advance the Jackson-Kush Plan and the aim of creating economic democracy in Jackson and
beyond.

The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement

The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement is an organization of Afrikan people struggling for


self-determination for people of Afrikan descent living within the United States and the liberation of
Afrikan people worldwide. The organization is grounded in six-core principles: Human Rights, Self
Determination, End to Genocide, Reparations, End to Sexism and Patriarchy, and Freedom for
Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War. 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the Malcolm X
Grassroots Movement, which was founded in Jackson, Mississippi under the leadership of Chokwe
Lumumba and the New Afrikan Peoples Organization (NAPO).

The New Afrikan Peoples Organization

The New Afrikan Peoples Organization (NAPO) is an organization struggling for sovereignty and
self-determination for New Afrikan people. The term New Afrikan signifies people of Afrikan
descent who identify with the New Afrikan national liberation movement for land and
independence. The New Afrikan Peoples Organization was founded in 1984, and was chaired by
Chokwe Lumumba from 1984 to 2013.
Support Cooperation Jackson and the Lumumba Center
The Lumumba Commemorative Weekend is also a benefit Cooperation Jackson and the Chokwe
Lumumba Center for Economic Democracy and Development. Cooperation Jackson is currently
seeking to raise $200,000 to help advance strategic aspects of its work. A portion of the funds will
support improvements at the Lumumba Center, including a new roof, solar panel installation,
entertainment and recording systems, and a state of the art kitchen for the Nubias Place Cafe. A
portion will also support the transformative work of Cooperation Jackson to build a community land
trust and a sustainable, livework community in West Jackson that will create living wage jobs and
permanently affordable housing. Individuals and organizations wishing to contribute can do so by
check or money order made out to Cooperation Jackson.
