Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities:

During this course, students should have the ability to apply knowledge of mathematics
and physics.

Course Description
Engineering Mechanics is divided into two major parts, namely Statics and Dynamics.
Statics is primarily concerned to system of forces applied to body at rest. It includes the
following topics: resultant of force system; equilibrium of force system; cables; friction;
trusses; frames; centroid; center of gravity; and moment of inertia.
Dynamics is the study of body in motion. It covers the following: kinematics, dynamics,
kinetics, work-energy equation, impulse and momentum.
COURCE OUTCOMES FOR ENGINEERING MECHANICS
1. The students will be able to understand the basic concept of a force and will be
able to analyze the effect of a system of forces on a body.
2. The students will be able to illustrate the static equilibrium of bodies in 2D and
3D and the effect of friction and its governing laws on bodies in equilibrium.
3. The students will be able to analyze the properties of the physical objects by
studying the centroids, Center of gravity, Moment of Inertia and Mass moment of
inertia of bodies.

4. The students will be able to understand the laws of motion and study the
kinematic parameters of a body in motion.
5. The students will be able to simplify the solutions of many problems involving
forces, displacement and velocity of connected systems in translation, fixed axis
rotation and plane motion using Newtons law of motion and work energy
principle.
6. The students will be able to write and solve the dynamic equilibrium equation of
bodies and study and apply the principle of conservation of linear momentum and
different types of impact.
