ASSIGNMENT TASKS
Scenario
You are working as a designer for a local digital design company VooDoo Media. The company have been asked
to provide support to a local school who are about to deliver a digital graphics unit and would like some specialist
input. Your team leader has suggested to the boss that you are the person best placed to help the students
understand the key hardware and software used by digital graphics designers in the industry.
Task 1
Produce a presentation that describes the role of the hardware and software required in producing and editing
digital graphics which you will use when you visit the school. The hardware and software required include:
Hardware

Graphics card
Processor
Internal memory (RAM)
Hard drive
Flash (usb storage, SD etc)
Digital Camera

Software

Graphics Tablet
Mouse
Scanner
Printer
Plotter
Monitor

Vector graphics (Illustrator)

Bitmap creation software
(Photoshop)

This provides evidence for [P1]

For M1
Add an additional section to your presentation that compares the limitations of different hardware and software
described in the first task.
This provides evidence for [M1]
Task 2
The students are not secure in their knowledge of file types and formats and need to know this to pass their
upcoming assessment. In particular, they need to know about the two types of graphics commonly produced and
how graphics are compressed to reduce the file size.
Produce a report that:
a) Explains the different between vector and bitmap files including typical use, file sizes and the effects of
scaling images in that format.
b) Explains the difference between the lossy and lossless compression techniques.
c) Includes a fully complete version of the table below for the following graphic formats:
jpg, bmp, gif, png, svg, psd
Format

Typical Use

Features

Limitations

This provides evidence for [P2]

Task 3
The students are very interested in ensuring their coursework graphics will work well on all sorts of different
mediums. They would like to know more about the way graphics need to be designed in order to work well on
them.
Write an evaluative report on the impact of evolving output mediums on the design and creation of graphic
images. You need to consider at least three mediums, e.g. developments in printers, developments in mobile
phones (or tablet computers), developments in e-book readers.
