Furnish test specimens selected by testing agency from same blocks as actual
materials proposed for incorporation into the Work.
3. Flexural Strength Tests: ASTM C880, performed on specimens of same thickness,
orientation of cut, and finish as installed stone. One set of test specimens is required
to be tested for every 500 sq. m, but not fewer than 2 sets for each stone variety.
4. If at least one of two specimens for each sampled block has flexural strength equal to
or greater than 80 percent of the smallest average value for subgroups previously
tested for flexural strength, no further testing or reduction in working stress is
required for the group of blocks represented by the specimens. If both specimens of a
sampled block fail the 80 percent criterion, additional testing or reduction in working
stress is required for blocks in that group.
a. Additional testing option consists of applying two-specimen test and 80 percent
rule to each quarry block. For any block that fails, the two-specimen test and 80
percent rule may be used for each slab cut from the block. Any slab that fails
shall be rejected; any block that fails shall be rejected unless its slabs are
checked individually.
b. Reduction in working stress option consists of reducing allowable flexural stress
in stone, and allowable load on an anchor, both of which are derived from
results of other specified tests. Reduction factor shall be average of specimens
from blocks that failed 80 percent rule (both specimens included in average)
divided by original flexural strength.
5. Quality control test results shall not be used to increase allowable flexural stress or
allowable load on an anchor.
6. Submit quality control test reports for information only, before fabrication of stone is
begun. Reports shall include identification of quarry blocks from which specimens
are taken, and a list of the blocks in each group represented by each pair of test
specimens.

SECTION 044200
STONE CLADDING (ST)
B: Brushed.- Plastic or metal brushes are placed in contact with the surface. A certain
force is used with this process which takes away the softest stone parts giving the surface a
work look. It has certain similarities to that of a leather/antique finish. Final sample to
match look, texture and quality of Msheireb representatives sample
D. BH: Bush-Hammered. - Mechanical impacts with a multiple pointed tool. The surface
becomes undulated with indentations at the points of impact with the bushes then removing
the softer stone around the impact points. The surface finish renders the finish lighter in
colour than its polished form would take. The depth of the groove varies with the number
of bats used but will range from 1/32" to 1/16" deep and from 3/32 to 7/32 apart. Final
sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb representatives sample.
E. D: Design Pattern Cut - Custom pattern cut into stone slab by means of acid-etching or
water-jet cutting. Cutting method based on design and recommendation of manufacturer.
Final sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb representatives sample.
F. F: Flamed- A blowtorch is used on the surface of the stone with gives off a flame of high
temperature. Materials with a high mineral content such as granite experience heat shock
causing the crystals to shatter. This surface is then rough to the touch and offers the quality
of being non-slippery. Final sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb
representatives sample.
G. FP: Fine Picked.
H.G. G: Grooved (Benching) Medium. - Small parallel saw cuts into the stone of varying
widths and depths. Final sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb
representatives sample.
I.H. HF: Honed - Fine.- Very fine abrasive pad used to achieve finish as recommended by
manufacturer. Final sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb representatives
sample.
J.I. H: Honed Low Grit. - Standard factory finish using varying grades of abrasive polishing
pads until a matt flat surface finish is achieved. Final sample to match look, texture and
quality of Msheireb representatives sample. For stones identified with low grit finish in
finish legeng utilize 60 grit or as recommended by manufacturer; Final sample to match
look, texture and quality of Msheireb representatives sample.
K.J. P: Polished. - Standard factory finish. Surface is highly reflective and the least porous of
the finishes available. Final sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb
representatives sample.
L.K. S: Sandblasted.- To achieve a sandblasted finish the surface is blasted with a sand jet that
can be powered by steam or compressed air. The colour of the material is dull in
comparison to its polished form and removes the depth of body of the surface. The material
appears to have an almost scratched surface which are not harsh to the touch. Powered by
compressed air, the sandblast machine forces 20, 40, or 60 grade sand directly onto the
stone. This leaves a fine to coarse planed surface on the stone. Final sample to match look,
texture and quality of Msheireb representatives sample.
L. SC: Scabbled.- Scabbling machine uses several heads, each with several carbide or steel
tips that peck at the stone. It operates by pounding a number of tipped rods down onto the
concrete surface in rapid succession. It takes several passes with the machine to achieve the
desired depth. Final sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb representatives
sample.
M.
SW- Saw Cut- Diamond sawed - finish produced by sawing with a diamond toothed saw.
A finish is not applied to the stone; the appearance of the surface is a result of blade or wire
used to cut it. A sawn finish will produce a flat but raw stone. Matte finish. After initial
cutting, the stone is processed to remove the heaviest saw marks but not enough to achieve
a "honed" finish. Granite, marble, and limestone can be purchased this way, typically on a
special order basis. Final sample to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb
representatives sample
M.N. R: Ribbed- Thick bands of cuts into the stone of varying widths and depths. Final sample
to match look, texture and quality of Msheireb representatives sample.
