INTRODUCTION
1.1

Intended Audience

The user of this document is involved with system integration and/or software design. We assume that the
reader is familiar with the terminology and concepts that are used in the DICOM 3.0 standard.
Readers not familiar with DICOM 3.0 terminology should first read the appropriate parts of the DICOM
standard itself, prior to reading this conformance statement.
Although the use of this conformance statement in conjunction with the DICOM 3.0 standard is intended to
facilitate communication with other medical imaging equipment, it is not sufficient to guarantee, by itself, the
inter-operation of the connection. The following issues need to be considered:

1.1.1

Integration

The integration of any device into a system of interconnected devices goes beyond the scope of the
DICOM 3.0 standard and this conformance statement when interoperability is desired. The responsibility for
analyzing the applications requirements and developing a solution that integrates the Agfa equipment with
other vendors systems is the users responsibility and should not be underestimated.

1.1.2

Validation

Testing the complete range of possibilities between the Agfa equipment and non-Agfa devices, before the
connection is declared operational, is deemed to be a necessity. The user should ensure that any non-Agfa
provider accepts full responsibility for all validation required for their connection with the Agfa equipment. The
accuracy of image data once it has crossed the interface between the Agfa equipment and the non-Agfa
device as well as the stability of the image data for the intended applications is the responsibility of the nonAgfa provider.

1.1.3

Future Evolution

As the DICOM 3.0 standard evolves to meet the users growing requirements and to incorporate new
features and technologies, Agfa will follow the evolution of the standard. This evolution of the standard may
require changes to devices that have implemented DICOM 3.0. The user should ensure that any non-Agfa
provider, who connects with Agfa devices, also plans future evolution of the DICOM standard. A refusal to do
so may reflect in the loss of functionality and/or connectivity between the different products.

1.2

Purpose of this Document

This conformance statement specifies the compliance of the Print Management Service Class (PMS)
component with the DICOM standard. The Print Management Service Class component is an
implementation of the DICOM 3.0 standard for print management. The Print Management Service Class is
used to send images to a hardcopy printer for printing on film or paper. The Print Management Service Class
is a network print server for the Agfa MG 3000, DRYSTAR 2000 and DRYSTAR 3000.

IMPLEMENTATION MODEL
2.1

Application Data Flow Diagram

Figure 2.1: Implementation model.

2.2

Functional Definitions of AEs

When the printing is invoked by the SCU AE, the SCU will make use of the SOP classes defined for Print
Management which allow the definition of a Film Session with one or more subordinate Film Boxes, which in
turn contain one or more subordinate Image Boxes. The SCU controls the printing by manipulating the Print
Management SOP Classes by means of DIMSE services.
The Print Management SOP Classes are managed by the PMS (SCP). The PMS (SCP) waits for another
DICOM Print Management Service application AE (SCU) to connect. PMS (SCP) will accept Associations
with Presentation Context for the Print Management Service Class. Only one printer is connected to a single
PMS.

2.3

Sequencing of Real World Activities

Not applicable for Real World Activities.

However, a Film Session has to be created before one or more subordinate Film Boxes can be created. In
turn, the Film Box has to be created before one or more subordinate Image Boxes can be created.

Association Establishment Policies

General

Before any SOP Classes can be exchanged between the SCU AE and the PMS (SCP), an association stage
takes place to negotiate and exchange the capabilities of the SCU and SCP. The Print Management SCU
and SCP establish an Association by using the Association Services of the DICOM Upper Layer. During
association establishment, the DICOM Print Management AE negotiates the supported SOP classes. An
association needs at least 150 Kbytes on disk quota.
Only the SCU AE shall release an Association. The Association may be aborted by the SCU or by the SCP.
The SCU AE attempts to initiate a new Association for each print session. This means that when no
operation is done on the Association, the SCU should release the Association.
One can only send DIMSE messages to instances that are created on the same Association.
The Maximum PDU length for the PDUs offered by the PMS (SCP) is 65542 bytes. This means that the
maximum value for a PDU-length field is 65542 bytes.

3.1.7.2

Number of Associations

The number of supported Associations depends on the configuration of the printing device, with a maximum
of 6 Associations. For DRYSTAR 3000, the maximum number of Associations is equal to 5. No more
Associations are accepted if the DRYSTAR 3000 is set offline. However, a printer status OFFLINE is sent if
the DRYSTAR 3000 is shut down.

3.1.7.3

Asynchronous Nature

PMS (SCP) will only allow one outstanding operation on an Association. The PMS (SCP) can, however,
issue an asynchronous N-EVENT message as defined in the supported SOP Classes.

3.1.7.4

Implementation Identifying Information

The following identifying information is valid:

Implementation Class UID:
1.3.51.0.1.3
DICOM Application Context Name: 1.2.840.10008.3.1.1.1

3.1.8

Association Initiation Policy

Not applicable to the Print Management Service component, because the PMS (SCP) cannot initiate an
Association. The PMS as SCU is not implemented.

3.1.9

Association Acceptance Policy

The PMS (SCP) accepts an Association. If the Association is rejected or if all possible Presentation Contexts
for the supported Meta SOP Classes are rejected, then the PMS (SCP) generates an error message and
sends an abort-request for the Association.
The PMS (SCP) obtains the called_AE_title from the ART configuration table (e.g. apip_dest). This configuration is
part of the installation procedure and described in a separate document. The calling_AE_title is used to setup
specific configuration parameters. This configuration is also described in a separate document.
All Associations must use the same destination TCP/IP port number.

3.1.9.2

SOP Specific Conformance to Basic Grayscale Print Management Meta

SOP Class

Standard conformance is also provided to the DICOM Basic Grayscale Print Management Class
(1.2.840.10008.1.1.9) as SCP.
The maximum number of Print Jobs is 1024 (providing that there is sufficient memory/disk allocation).
Received attributes that are not supported will not issue an error or warning status code.

3.1.9.2.1

Basic Film Session SOP Class (1.2.840.10008.5.1.1.1)

The following DIMSE services are supported:

N-CREATE
N-SET
N-DELETE
N-ACTION

All other DIMSE services return the following error code:

Table 3.9: DIMSE services error code.

N-CREATE: is sent by the SCU AE to create a Basic Film Session SOP instance, when an
Association has been established. If N-CREATE fails, the SCP AE will return an error message. The NCREATE causes the Basic Film Session to be created and its attributes initialized. The Basic Film Session
has to be created before the Basic Film Boxes are created.
PMS only supports one Basic Film Session instance on an Association. No other concurrent Film Session
shall be created on one Association. However, a sequential Film Session on the same Association is allowed
after deleting the previous Film Session.

If no value is sent for Minimum Density (2010,0120) or Maximum Density (2010,0130), then the value is
taken from the PMS configuration table and mapped within the range of values depending on the chosen
film type and film size. No error or warning status code is returned.

NOTE:
The PMS can return the warning status code 0116H when the value is present but incorrect (refer to
description of status codes in this section and Section 6.3.41).
When the value of element (2010,0150) is incorrect, no error or warning status code is returned.

Agfa Film Layouts

The attributes Image Display Format (2010,0010), Film Orientation (2010,0030) and Film Size ID
(2010,0050) are used to uniquely define an Agfa film layout.
Detailed layout information is described in separate documents. The following documents are available:

8X10 Portrait Layouts for: LR2100, LR3300, LR5200

8X10 Landscape Layouts for: LR2100, LR3300, LR5200

14X17 Portrait Long Leg Layouts for: LR2100, LR3300, LR5200, DRYSTAR 3000

Refer to the respective film layouts document for more information (e.g. print box sizes) on the different film
layouts. For more information on these documents, see Section 7.1.
3.1.9.2.2.1.1

Film Layouts with Annotation Boxes

Agfa film layouts with annotation boxes have a reserved area at the top and bottom of the film for printing
annotations. Referring to an Agfa film layout with annotation boxes is done by mapping the DICOM-defined
film format information with the corresponding Agfa film format (layout) identifier by means of an ASCII file
(extension .IDF). Each line of this mapping file contains the DICOM film format information, with the
corresponding Agfa film format ID as follows:
film_size\film_orientation\image_display_format<space>Agfa_filmformat_id
Any combination of these elements is possible, providing that a matching Agfa film layout ID is available.
Available Agfa film layout IDs are listed in Table 3.19.

Table 3.19: Agfa film layout IDs with annotations.

3.1.9.2.2.1.2

Film Layouts with max. printable area

It is also possible to use max. printable area film layouts; this means that there is no space foreseen for
annotation boxes on these layouts. These max. printable area layouts can be selected in two ways:
By means of the attribute: image_display_format with a value CUSTOM\i. In this case, i is a 3- or
4-digit number that represents the selected Agfa film layout ID.
By mapping the DICOM-defined film format information with the corresponding Agfa film format (layout)
identifier, by using the appropriate mapping file (extension .IDF) for these layouts. These mapping files differ
from the mapping files used for the default film layouts with annotations. This needs to be configured by Service
during installation of the hardcopy device in relation to the AE Title of the host system.
Table 3.20 summarizes the mapping files that only provide a max. printable area for 1/1 layouts. All other
layouts are equal to the film layouts with annotation boxes.

Table 3.22: Agfa film layout IDs for max. printable area.

The selection of the used Agfa film layout ID numbers must be decided in consultation with Agfa.
Examples:

The attribute values 14INX17IN\PORTRAIT\STANDARD\1,1 select the Agfa layout 1411, if

mapping file PMS.IDF is used (DEFAULT behavior). They select the Agfa layout 2411, if mapping
file PMS2000.IDF is used (AE Title-dependent configuration).
The attribute values 14INX17IN\LANDSCAPE\CUSTOM\2511 select the Agfa layout 2511.
No mapping file is used.
Smoothing Type (2010,000080): the following values for Smoothing Type have a special
meaning:
"0": Unsharp smoothing
"140":
Sharp (Hi-resolution) smoothing

The Smoothing Type attribute, although defined by DICOM with Value Representation type CS, is interpreted
as Value Representation type IS by the application. If the Smoothing Type attribute equals "0" or falls within the
range "100" to "299" then it is accepted. Otherwise the default Smoothing Type value is used.
If the Magnification Type attribute is "CUBIC" (provided by the SCU AE) and no Smoothing Type attribute is
defined, then the default Smoothing Type value is used.

Configuration Information: can be used to define the use of a perception LUT, Annotation Boxes, a Color
Separation Table and Window Width/Window Center. The defined parameters need to be separated by
the "\" (BACKSLASH) character.

Perception LUT
Supported values:
PERCEPTION_LUT=LINEAR:
PERCEPTION_LUT=KANAMORI:
PERCEPTION_LUT=n:

Linear Perception LUT

Kanamori Perception LUT
LUT defined by value 'n', n is of VR type IS

When "PERCEPTION_LUT=n" is used, 'n' is defined in the range 75 to 220 as follows:

n
< 100
100
100 to 200
200
> 200

Meaning
Hyper-Kanamori Curve
Exact Kanamori Curve (same as "PERCEPTION_LUT=KANAMORI")
Curve between Kanamori and Linear
Exact Linear Curve (same as "PERCEPTION_LUT=LINEAR")
Hypo-Linear Curve

Table 3.23: PERCEPTION_LUT=n.

If no Configuration Information attribute for the Perception LUT is defined by the SCU AE, the default
Perception LUT value is taken from the PMS configuration table.

The Perception LUT is not used for color images.

Annotation Box

Supported values:
ANNOTATION1:
ANNOTATION2:
ANNOTATION3:
ANNOTATION4:
ANNOTATION5:
ANNOTATION6:

FILE1

FILE3
FILE4
FILE5
FILE6

This is used to print e.g. a logo on a film. A maximum of 6 files (in TIFF format) can be defined,
depending on the layout chosen (refer to MG3000 documentation). An extension .TIF is added to
each annotation filename. A filename is a maximum of 8 characters long. Selecting an annotation
requires the annotation file to be present.

Color Separation
Supported values:
CS_TABLE = n, where n is defined in the ranges:
1 to18 for transparent film (BLUE and CLEAR FILM)
101 to 118 for opaque film (PAPER)

Color Separation is used to choose the Color Separation Table in the DRYSTAR 2000.

The Color Separation Table (CS_TABLE) is only used for color images. Minimum Density Value,
Maximum Density Value and Perception LUT are ignored for color images.
Window Width and Window Center

Supported values:
WINDOW_WIDTH=xx\WINDOW_CENTER=yy

This method is film-based and does not allow the setting of Window Width and Window Center
attributes on a per-image basis. If the Window Center attribute is present, the Window Width
attribute also needs to be present, and vice-versa.
The Window Width and Window Center attributes of the Configuration Information element are
only applicable to Basic Printing. In addition, the Window Width and Window Center attributes
may not be present in the range.

Besides the above-specified standard attributes, the Preformatted Grayscale Image Sequence can also be
extended with the following DICOM attributes. If the Patient ID is present it is used by the PMS application;
otherwise an ID generated by the Application is used. If the transformation elements are present, the
specified transformations are performed.
If the Window Center attribute is present, the Window Width attribute also needs to be present, and vice
versa. If not, an error status is returned. From an analogue viewpoint, if one of the Rescale parameters is
present, all three have to be present.

If the DICOM Basic Annotation Box Service Class is supported, the PMS SCP looks first for the annotation
parameters in the PMS configuration on the device. The found data may be overwritten by the information
out of the 'PROFILE.PMS' file (see Section 6). This data may be overwritten by the information out of the

SCU-specific PMS Configuration

The PMS.INI file is used to allow an SCU dependent configuration of the PMS component. The configuration
is done per Calling AE Title. Separate Calling AE Titles may use the same configuration file (.CFG). If the
PMS.INI file does not contain a Calling AE Title, the default PMS configuration is used for this Calling AE
Title. There is only one PMS.INI file per MG3000/DRYSTAR system. The PMS.INI file must reside on the D:
partition.
The file PMS.INI contains sections for each Calling AE Title. A section is identified by an opening bracket '[' at the
beginning of a line, the section name, and a closing bracket ']'. The section name has to comply with the rules
defined for "Calling AE Title in DICOM 3.0. A section consists of one or more lines with an attribute and a value.
The defined attributes are:
IDF: Set to the name of an Image Display Format (or .IDF) file. The syntax of such an .IDF file is explained
in the conformance claim of PMS. An .IDF file is used to translate a combination of Film Size, Image
Display Format and Film Orientation to an Agfa layout ID. Film Size, Image Display Format and Film
Orientation are DICOM 3.0 attributes. When the attribute is absent, the default IDF file is used.
CFG: Set to the name of an NVF formatted configuration file. The NVF variables in the configuration file
are the variables listed in the PMS Configuration Table. The extension of the configuration file is .PMS.
If an attribute is not present in the .PMS file, the default value is applied.
Example of a PMS.INI file:
[CT SCANNER]
IDF = C:/PMS.IDF
CFG = D:/CT.PMS
[MR SCANNER 1]
CFG = D:/MR.PMS
[MR SCANNER 2]
IDF = C:/MRSCAN2.IDF
CFG = D:/MR.PMS

6.3

PMS Configuration Table

The Print Management Service obtains the configuration data from a configuration table.

6.3.1

local_port

Description:
This parameter defines the TCP/IP port number to be used by the PMS component. The port number should
also be used on the Client (Host) to establish a connection to the MG3000. The default value is the "well
known" port number 104 registered for use by the DICOM Upper Layer Protocol. The port number has to be
the same for all associations of PMS.

NOTE:
This parameter cannot be set per SCU Calling AE Title.
Example:
Required Setting
Use TCP/IP port 104

6.3.4

max_pdu_length

Description:
This parameter defines the MAXIMUM length of message (Protocol Data Unit - PDU) that the DICOM Upper
Layer Protocol can receive in the PMS component. It should be set to the maximum size of an MMS IMAGE
block plus 6 bytes. The value is expressed in bytes.

NOTE:
This parameter should NOT be modified. The software will ensure that the PDU length is always in the
range 8Kb <= PDU length <= 64Kb.

6.3.6

media_sizes

Description:
This parameter is used to define the media sizes used by the PMS Module. The selection of film formats or
paper formats can only be made from the media (film/paper) sizes actually used by the Hospital.
The parameter is defined by adding together the defined values for each media size used (one bit is used
per media size).
The media size and parameter values are:

8*10" film:
10*14" film:
11*14" film:
14*14" film:
14*17" film:
A4 paper:
A3 paper:

1
2
4
8
16
32
64

The default value allows all media sizes to be selected, but be aware that media sizes may be chosen that
are not used by the Hospital, and this will lead to print jobs remaining in the job queue forever!

fit_dbmax

Description:
This parameter defines the behavior when a dbmax is specified that is higher than the dbmax of the film.
When this parameter is set to 1, the printer will perform some conversion of the selected dbmax, so that the
job still can be printed. This is also the default behavior when this parameter is not defined (backwards
compatibility with older versions).
When this parameter is set to '0', the printer will NOT perform a conversion on the selected dbmax. When the
printer contains a medium with a dbmax that is too low, the Job will not be printed. In that case, the Job will
remain in the print queue, and in the print queue detail screen, the medium size field will be appended with
'HD' to indicate that this job requires a 'High Density' film.
Example:
Required Setting
Scale dbmax, so that a job is printed on a film with any density

text_flag

Description:
This parameter is used as a switch to define if text and/or graphic primitives should be printed on the layout.
Text can only be printed on the layout if the layout defines text boxes and the associated text is available in the
hardcopy folder. Graphic primitives can only be printed on the layout if the layout defines graphic primitive data.
If annotation is required, the 'annotation1..6' parameters should also be filled in correctly.
The standard set of Agfa film layouts (formats) does not have any text boxes defined and this parameter is
therefore ignored.
Example:
Required Setting
Disable text printing
Enable text printing

NVF Entry

6.3.36

Resolution

Description:
This entry is used to define the pixel resolution ratio (Pixel shape) between pixel and line. It must be
expressed as follows:
Resolution =

#pixels/mm)
(#lines/mm)

= *10000

NOTE:
It appears that this parameter is used incorrectly in the MG3000. You should define the "inverse" value
of that computed:
MG 3000Resolution =

#lines/mm)
(#pixels/mm)

= *10000

The software will not be corrected, as this will introduce an incompatibility in the existing OEM files (also in
existing MG configurations).
Example:
Required Setting
4 pixel/mm; 4 lines/mm
5 pixel/mm; 4 lines/mm

See also: Sections 6.3.38 and 6.3.39.

6.3.38

ipl_subid

Description:
This parameter is used to further define the Input LUT Identifier, but only when either GAMMA
CORRECTION or OEM DEFINED is selected. When ipl_id is GAMMA CORRECTION, the ipl_subid defines
the actual GAMMA correction value - (Typical values are around 2.0).
The MeNU gamma correction value is stored as an integer by multiplying the actual gamma correction value
by 100.
Actual Gamma Value
2.00
1.97
2.05

197
205

Table 6.41: MeNU gamma correction values.

When ipl_id is OEM DEFINED, the ipl_subid has the following meaning (range for ipl_subid: 1 to 999):
The value of the ipl_subid is used to create the filename containing the OEM Input LUT. The filename
created is OEMxyz.IPL, where xyz is the ipl_subid (with leading zeroes).
Example:
ipl_subid
1
2
123

filename
OEM001.IPL
OEM012.IPL
OEM123.IPL

The file OEMxyz.IPL must contain the OEM Input LUT formatted as 8 columns and 32 rows
(8 * 32 = 256 values), with a space between every value in the same row.
Example:
Required Setting
GAMMA CORRECTION 2.00
OEM Input LUT File OEM010.IPL

NVF Entry
ipl_subid 200

6.3.39

add_WL

Description:
This flag says if we should add Window Level, Resolution and IPL to the image data. Setting add_WL to 1
does the job. The values are taken from the configuration table. The default is 0, which does not modify any
image parameters.
Example:
Required Setting
Add Window & Level
Do not modify image

NVF Entry
add_WL 1
add_WL 0

Table 6.44: add_WL configuration example.

See also the following Sections: 6.3.32, 6.3.33, 6.3.34, 6.3.35, 6.3.37, 6.3.38.

6.3.40

pms_prio

Description:
This parameter sets the task priority of PMS. Priority ranges from 24 to 149, 24 being high priority, 149 being
low priority. Do not confuse with print priority attribute (2000,0020) of a DICOM film session!
Normally, this parameter is never to be changed and, if it is, it is being done so at your convenience at
system production facilities.
Example:
Required Setting
PMS Task Priority 101
