Activities Using WA
WA Activity # 6 ‐‐ Exponential Functions
Type "2^x, 3^x" into the WA search engine. Use the results to answer the following questions.
1. Two graphs are displayed, a red one and a blue one. If they weren’t labeled, how would you
know which is the graph of y = 2^x and which is the graph of y = 3^x? Explain.
2. Are these functions? Explain why or why not. What is the domain and range for each
function?
3. Give three input‐output pairs for each function.
Type "2^x, 2^(.5x)" into the WA search engine. Use the results to answer the following
questions.
4. Do the parentheses make a difference? What happens if your command does NOT have the
parentheses?
5. Two graphs are displayed, a red one and a blue one. If they weren’t labeled, how would you
know which is the graph of y = 2^x and which is the graph of y = 2^(.5x)? Explain.
6. Are these functions? Explain why or why not. What is the domain and range for each
function?
7. Give three input‐output pairs for each function. Give the answers in exact radical form and
as a decimal approximation to three places.
8. Type “(1/2)^x, 1/2^x” into the WA search engine. Do the parentheses make a difference?
Why or why not?
9. Type “(2/3)^x, 2/3^x” into the WA search engine. Do the parentheses make a difference?
Why or why not?
Type "(1/2)^x, (1/3)^x" into the WA search engine. Use the results to answer the following
questions.
10. Do you need the parentheses? What happens if you type the command with OUT
parentheses?
11. Two graphs are displayed, a red one and a blue one. If they weren’t labeled how would you
know which is the graph of y = 1/2^x and which is the graph of y = 1/3^x?

12. Are these functions? Explain why or why not. What is the domain and range for each
function?
13. Give three input‐output pairs for each function.
14. Type “2(2^x), 2*2^x”into the WA search engine. Are these the same functions or are they
different? Explain your answer.
15. WA says the “results” are 2^(x + 1), 2^(x + 1). Why? Explain.
Type 2(2^x), 3(2^x)” into the WA search engine. Use the results to answer the following
questions.
16. Two graphs are displayed, a red one and a blue one. If they weren’t labeled how would you
know which is the graph of y = 2(2^x) and which is the graph of y = 3(2^x)?
17. WA says the “results” are 2^(x + 1), 3*2^x. Explain why the different notation.
18. Give three input‐output pairs for each function.
