Q1 [20 Marks]
a) A microphone whose frequency response is limited to 5 kHz , picks up not only desired
signal x (t) but also its echoes. However, only the first echo, arriving after
t d=1.25 ms ,
has a significant amplitude (of = 0.5) relative to the desired signal x ( t ) . The
microphone
signal is to be processed digitally in an effort to remove the echo.
i) Develop a difference equation relating the sampled output and the sampled input of the
microphone using an arbitrary sampling rate of F s .

b) During the implementation of the final year project, a student needs to design a high
quality digital resonator that passes an analog frequency F0 250 Hz . Assume a sampling
frequency of 2 kHz , design a digital resonator, H z , which passes F0 250 Hz with
bandwidth F0 5 Hz , and zeros at z= 1.

notch filter to remove an undesirable 50 Hz hum associated with the supply unit. Assume

b) Suppose it is required to design a low-pass filter for use in digital communication. The
filter specifications are as follows:

i) Design a linear phase FIR filter using the window method to satisfy the above
objectives.
