NISSIM EZEKIEL
Nissim Ezekiel was born in 1924 In 1953 he worked as an Assistant in the Illustrated Weekly of India.
During the year 1964-1966, he was the art critic of The Times of India and during 1966-1967, worked as the
editor of Poetry India. He was also the co-founder of the literary monthly Imprint. Ezekiel was awarded the
Sahitya Academy Award in 1983 and also he received Padmashri in 1988
ANITHA MAZUMDAR DESAI
Anitha Desai, the famous novelist and short story writer was born in 1937 in
Mussorie, India. She had her schooling at Queen Mary's Higher Secondary School. Also she
got graduated in English Literature from the University of Delhi. She worked as an author
and professor. Her Important works are Cry Of The Peacock, fire on the Mountain, Clear
Light Of day, The Village by the Sea, In Custody She is now honoured as a Fellow of the
Royal Society of Literature. Also she won many Awards like Sahitya Academi Award in
1978, Beson Medal of royal Society of Literature (2003), short listed thrice for Booker
Prize for Fiction. Now she is emplyed as the professor at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, United States of America

Ma, while I was on my way to school I felt I was the worst perjurer. I was not sure at all whether my
description of Samuel was sure. I could not decide how much of what I said was imagines and how much of
it was real. I thought about Samuel, he was not such a bad man and he had some personal regard for me. I
was in a confusion in regard to Samuel's character, whether he was good or bad, whether he deserved the
allegations in the letter or not. Suddenly I felt an impulse to return home and beg dad to take back the letter.
But I was afraid. The more I thought of Samuel, the more I grieved for him.
When I entered the school, I decided to deliver the letter at the end of the day. I thought Samuel
might do something to justify the letter. So I went to my class. There Mr. Samuel was teaching arithmetic. I
hopped that he would fall on me and tear my skin off. But nothing happened, he permitted me to enter the
class and sit. I was totally confused at his behaviour. Then he inspected the home lessons. My turn came. I
said that I didn't do the homework. He did not punish me. During the whole day I was thinking about
provoking Samuel and get punished. Then the last period came. Samuel was teaching Indian History. I tried
to provoke him shouting and answering questions and raising doubts. When he began to put questions for
the last few minutes, I shouted and really provoked him and he became impatient. He called me to the front
and I received 5 wholesome cuts. When the bell rang I ran to the headmaster's room. But it was locked. I
asked the peon where the headmaster was. He said he was on leave for a weak. I was shocked and the peon
told me that I can give the letter to Mr. Samuel the assistant headmaster. I fled from the place. That's why I
didn't deliver the letter. But father didn't believe and he snatched the letter from me an tore it. And remarked
that I deserve Mr. Samuel. Actually Ma, I am confused. I don't know what to do. Could you do me a favour?
Tell dad this and convince him my innocence.

Teacher Arrested for Corporal Punishment

Malgudi: A teacher was arrested here yesterday for giving corporal punishments to his students. Mr.
Samuel, Teacher of Albert Mission School, Malgudi is the culprit. Pupil said that he was violent , especially
with boys who come late. When started caning he would not stop until he saw blood on the boy's hand,
which he made the boy press to pupils forehead like a vermilion marking. He also made boy's stand on
their knees for quite long time. A parent gave a written complaint to the Headmaster and police yesterday
for giving six wholesome cuts to his son. The headmaster forwarded the complaint to the police and the
teacher was arrested on this. The court ordered to take him under police custody for five days for
interrogation. The Department suspended him from service till the inquiry is completed.

An unforgettable day in my life. Today we played Hide and Seek in the afternoon. Reghu was the
catcher. I hid in the desolate shed. Reghu did not find me. I touched the den. But the didn't accept my
winning. They all cheated me. I could not bear it. I felt my heart go heavy and ache inside me. I was

walk as it was too hot in my room. The Hotel Keeper warned me not to go out so late. But I ignored his
warning and went out. The street was deserted. When I was crossing the street, I felt somebody following
me. Before I could defend myself I felt the point of a knife against my back and a soft voice asking me not
to move. The stranger needed my eyes to make a bouquet of blue eyes. I was frightened. I told him that mine
was a light brown. But he didn't believe. I asked him to leave me. He wore a palm top hat and it covered half
his face. He had a long machete and asked me to hold a match to my face. He pried up my lids with his
fingers. I was shivering with fright. finally he let me go as my eyes weren't blue. I was terribly confused and
frightened. He left me. Gathering my wits I ran for the lodge. The very next morning I got out of that
village.

Mexico, 26th June: The mystery of terror that reigned the city for the past couple of weeks was unveiled.
The mysterious stranger, Mr Wilfred Gonsalvus (38) who terrified the the city for the last few weeks was
finally caught by the City police Tax Force. He was arrested from the City suburb while returning after an
attempt to attack the famous writer Mr. Octavio Paz who was staying in the city for a holiday trip. He had a
narrow escape from an attempt of having his eyes gouged scooped out. Mr Paz, who is reported to have
arrived here on a holiday trip, was walking across the street nearby the hotel at night. There were no street
lights. Suddenly a stranger held him from his back and demanded his eyes. The stranger told the tourist that
he wanted blue eyes to make a bouquet for his lady love. I thought he came for money. But I was shocked
to hear that he wanted my eyes, said Mr Paz. When asked, the City Police Commissioner said that a case
had been registered and the culprit was presented before the Hon. Court and he was given under custody for
further investigation

in the street. He said, as it was too hot in his room, he went out for a walk. It was too dark outside and there
were no street lights. When he reached the city centre, a man tried to attack him with a knife. He demanded
his eyes and tried to gouge it out. He was totally embarrassed when he said that he was in search of blue
eyes to make a bouquet of blue eyes for his beloved. I think he is a drunkard or a lunatic person. Similar
attacks are haunting the city for the last two weeks. I feel that the Police failed to get the culprit. The
residents in our area are thoroughly disappointed and afraid.
I request you to strengthen the night patrol and take necessary steps to save the street from such antisocial elements. Also ensure security to the life and wealth of the residents. Anticipating a favourable action

The Blue Bouquet of Octavio Paz is a typical story written in the mode of magical realism. It is a story of
suspense and terror. Eyes are a big theme in this story. Hotel keeper is blind in one eye, The night was a
garden of eyes ,and the man is looking for BLUE EYES . The setting of this story is a small Mexican
village. The narrator was staying in a hotel. It was hot inside the room. So he wanted to go out for a walk.
He was cautious not to step on a scorpion . He rubbed his chest and legs with a damp cloth and dried
himself. While he was dressing , he made sure that no bugs had got into his clothes . At the door he met the
hotel keeper who was blind in one eye . The narrator got out of the hotel into the darkness of the stone
paved street. He listened to the sounds of different leaves and insects . He thought that the whole universe
was a grand system of signals among different and enormous beings . He felt his existence only as one
syllable in a word . Then he walked on slowly and tossed the cigarette to the pavement. When he crossed a
street , he felt that someone had been following him. He turned around but could not see anybody . He tried
to run . But he could not . Suddenly he felt the presence of the point of a knife against his back. He was
asked not to move. The stranger wanted his eyes. The narrator offered money he had but the man wanted his
blue eyes to make a blue bouquet of blue eyes for his sweetheart. The narrator said that his were not blue but
light brown. He lit a match and held it against his face. He dropped it when his fingers were burned. The
stranger asked him to light another match and hold it close to his eyes . Then he asked to kneel down . The
stranger examined his eyes and found that were not blue. Suddenly he let him go. The narrator got up and
ran to his hotel room. The hotel-keeper who was blind in one eye was still sitting at the door . The next day
he left the village.
Dreams and mysteries usually happen in human life. Otherwise life will be boring.''The Blue
Bouquet'' of Octavio Paz is an interesting story which deals with dreams and mystery. The author t didn't
give any hint about the protagonist.
The main characters are the narrator and the hotel keeper. The hotel keeper is an important
character .He really gives the dream like hint of the atmosphere. The narrator was refreshed and he enjoyed
the beauty of the night . He was interested to walk alone. But the hotel keeper's words lend a charm of terror.
The narrator didn't mind the words of the hotel keeper. Though he can't see anything first, later he
was fully attracted to the beauty of the night. He enjoys the silence of the nature. He was walking along the
dark road. Suddenly he heard some one following him. He heard the cold silent words ''do not move''.
Mysterious is the demand of the stranger. He needs his blue eyes for his beloved. Mysterious is the ways of
love. The long machete glittered in the moonlight. The stranger didn't believe the words of the narrator . He
examined his eyes in the candle light .
The world we live in is a hell of mystery. And this story is built up with some mystery. This is the
winning point of the story. It makes the reader attention. The images in the story also is uncomfortable. Dark
warm room, one-eye blind keeper of the hotel, moonlit night all creates a sense of horror and mystery in
the mind of the readers.

Five years have passed. A horrible night. Unpredictable incidents always happen in my life. Strange
experiences.... unbelievable encounters...Five years before when I paced slowly through the streets I
had the faintest idea about what was in store for me... Who was he? I didn't dare to ask. What really
was his intention? Did he just plan to scare me? Did he really intend to gouge my eyes? I still can't
believe what he said making a bouquet of blue eyes for his sweetheart! What a strange idea! Did he
get enough blue eyes for the bouquet? Where is he now? Is he still wandering for the blue eyes.

Role of Films in the Life of People

Cinema emerged as a medium of entertainment. But gradually owing to its mass popularity it acquired the
role of creating awareness and educating the public. To achieve this role it started becoming a document of
our lives and a record of our time and space. A society is moulded to a great extent by historical events. So
naturally a popular medium in the society also gets influenced by historical factors. Thus cinema industry
also started reflecting the ideals propounded by various historical events.
. The national movements and the ideas propounded by the national leaders started penetrating into Kerala
and the people of the region started accepting these ideals as their own. They were so inspired by those
ideals that it became their way of life to form a critical opinion about every issue that came in their way.
Therefore the idea of an ideal place became very essential for the people from various strata of the society to
sit and discuss about the issues. That is how the wayside restaurants popularly known as teashops started
appearing on stage. The movement called Panthibhojanam or mixed eating was the immediate cause for the
emergence of teashops. This movement propounded the idea of people from various castes and communities
sitting together and eating. This was indeed a revolutionary step especially in a caste ridden society like
Kerala. As a result of such reform movements, the marginalized in the society started acquiring freedom of
movement. They started demanding higher wages for the works they have done. Thus most of the people in
the deprived sections of the society, no longer remained deprived.
They started becoming economically independent. This economic freedom helped people to get an
access into the teashops. These wayside restaurants welcomed anybody who could pay them for the food

they offered. Thus there was a play of economy based on money and the conditions of the society in these
wayside restaurants which helped them to evolve and develop and become a part and parcel of our daily

lives and popular media like cinema.
The wayside restaurants were a major element in a couple of Malayalam movies and also how they

played an important role in the fictions from which these movies were adapted. I have tried to analyze the

films Neelakuyil, Bhargavi Nilayam and Olavum Theeravum adapted from novels by Uroob, Muhammad
Basheer and M.T. Vasudevan Nair respectively. In all these fictions and films the importance of teashops

was never belittled. Teashops were the centre of attraction in all these fictions. And therefore when
films were made out of these fictions, teashops also emerged a powerful mechanism through which the plot

developed.

Cinema is for all the sections of the society. That is why it has emerged as a popular medium.
Anybody can watch a movie. Therefore we can say that in a way cinema promotes secularism. Your caste or

religion never determined your right to watch a movie. And such a secular medium can address any issue of
the society and provide a solution that can redress the grievances. So how can a filmmaker ensure his
audience about the pain he has taken in ensuring secularism and addressing issues of the society in
his film? It is through such subtle measures like shooting a scene in the wayside restaurants that they do so.
The teashops or the wayside restaurants are the abodes of the so called marginalized. The customers
in the teashops are treated only as individuals. People from different strata of the society meet at such places.
They can assert their individuality by raising their opinions on whatever issues, whether they may be on
major or minor incidents in these wayside restaurants. Thus these teashops offer an opportunity to every
person who otherwise does not get a chance to express their opinions in the public sphere. Every person
craves for attention. Everybody wants others to hear their views. Teashops help them not only to achieve
their desires but also in broadening their perspectives. Assertion of individuality moulds our personality.
Without the characters knowledge, teashops provide them this opportunity. Teashops also offer a chance for
the audience to see different types of observers. There are both passive and active observers in the society.
When such people find a place in teashops, the active observers actively involve in discussing the various
issues in the society by reading newspapers, exchanging local news or by simply chatting. In films such
active observers have a major role to play. It is through them that the major concerns or the message of the
film gets revealed But only difference between reality and reel is that in real life active observers express
their opinions through mass media and also by becoming a part of several organizations whereas in cinema,
the wayside restaurants become an ideal place for such discussions. Thus such characters are also given a
space in teashops. They enter into them as mere passive individuals but go out as enlightened individuals at
least in their minds, so later when a chance comes they can also express their ideas.

they generate humor and certain other times they help the plot to take a turning point.
Let us wait again for those local teashop scenes both in fictions and in films which once determined

exception to this. Our films of all periods records the cultural elements in away or the other. The article 'Tea-
shops in Malayalam Cinema by Sri C.S. Venkiteswaran tries to document the role played by tea-shops in the
social transformation that took place in the cultural domain of Kerala. According to the author tea-shops in
Kerala initiated a revolution in our dinning habits. Dinning together is marked as a milestone in the fight
against the prevailing caste system in Kerala then. The tea-shop was considered as a secular space where the
only criterion for entry was the possession of money. Anybody could have tea and snacks if they had money
with them. The customers were not belittled according to their caste or creed. The writer points out that the
tea-shops emerged at the time when wages were began to be paid in cash. It was also the time when people
began to travel extensively for their livelihood .

Today we have gathered here to celebrate our school Arts Fest. It is not an exaggeration to remark
that art is always associated with smile. So naturally, you all sit with smiling countenance. No doubt, the

The film 'Sunshine through the Rain' by Akira Kurosawa portrays the customs and belief systems of
Japan in a striking way. The thread of the film is taken from an Asiatic myth which is prevalent even today.
The boy in the film is prohibited to go out by his mother when the rain and sunshine come together as it is
the time of the foxe's marriage. Apart from the potrayal of a myth that is also seen in Kerala culture the film
also documents the dress code architecture, flora and fauna of Japan in a vivid fashion. Thus these two
pieces of writings try to emphasis the fact that film is media for documenting the culture and way of life of a
society. It also tries to record the similarity in the belief systems of people living in different cultures.

Thiruvalla: The week-long Musical Festival organised by the English Club of ABC School,
Thiruvalla, ended here yesterday. The Musical fest which was inaugurated by the famous musician A. R.
Rehman on last Monday was packed with magical performance of various bands in South India. Many
playback singers of Indian film industry performed. The fest provided a weeks musical feast for the music
lovers of the city. The feast ended with a fabulous performance of 'Gana Gandharvan' Yesudas' musical
concert.

The beggar and the king by Winthrop Parkhurst begins with a king complaining about the noise of a
beggar outside his window. This irritates the king because the beggar has been visiting the castle each day to
beg for food. The king tells his servant to torture and kill the beggar, but the servant replies that they have
tortured and killed the servant but he continues to return. Then, the king asks to see the beggar in his
chamber.
Once in his presence, the king demands the servant to bow to him but the beggar refuses. Instead, the
beggar demands that the king remove his crown and throw it into the streets. When the king refuses, the
beggar tells him that his voice will haunt him and his nights will be full of horrors. The king then orders the
beggar to be seized, but as the beggar walks out, none of the king's servants can move. The beggar leaves
and continues crying for bread, while the king is left to think about the decision to throw away his crown.

The Beggar A True Representative of the Marginalized

The beggar in Winthrop Parkhursts play, The Beggar and the King, is a very important character. It
is around him that the play is woven around. The title itself tells us that the authors sympathy is with the
beggar,and not with the king. He is a representative of the poor suffering and down trodden people of the
world. Unlike the ordinary beggars he is very bold and outspoken. When the king hears his voice he orders
his men to bind him and gag him. He even asks them to cut off his tongue. But the servant informs him that
when they cut off his tongue he grew another.
When he is brought before the king he is not ready to obey even a single command of the king. He
tells that the kings words are like a foolish tinkling in his ears. He also adds that it is better to be born as a
beggar than a king like him. The king asks the beggar to apologize for his impudence and stop crying in the
streets. But the beggar retorted that if the king throws away his crown he will stop crying for bread. He
stands adamant like a rock on the face of the kings repeated commands. He reminds the king that he is
stronger than a sea and a mountain. His words are more fearful than a hurricane. So even ten thousand of the
kings servants cant stop him. It is his suffering that is his strength.
Finally the beggar declares that he will cry for bread and fill up his belly. But one day he will lose his
temper and then he will blow over the palace using his arms as iron rods. He will snap the kings bones
between his fingers. Then he will beat upon the large drum using the kings head as drumstick.
Hearing the beggars words the king orders his servant to catch him,but the servant was stunned by
the beggars will power. The beggars voice is heard again. Frightened the king touches his crown as if to
throw it, only to fit it firmly to his head.

The very title of the play 'The Beggar and the King' subverts the popular notion that the king is more
important than the beggar. The characters in the story are not real individuals. They are only types. Each
character is an ideological image. The king occupies the seat of power with the least concern for the poor.
In the play ''the beggar and the king ''Winthrop Parkhurst celebrates the voice of the voiceless. There
are only three characters, the king, the servant and the beggar. The play begins with the cry of the beggar,''
Bread, Bread, Give me some bread.'' We see only the king and the servant on the stage. The beggar appears
only later. It establishes the fact that the king is insensitive even to the basic needs of the people. The
beggar's cry for bread annoys the king. The king occupies the seat of power with the least concern for the
poor. The servant supports the king with devotion. But he can't ignore the presence of the downtrodden. The
beggar represents the miserable plight of the poor and the landless. The king ignores the poverty and
suffering of the people. His language has only limited scope with no organic knowledge of life, on the other
hand the beggar speaks a lot and that too quite powerfully. He is proud enough to say that to be a beggar
is not so bad as to be a king.
The Servant
He plays a multiple roles in the play. He is a servant, a mediator and translator to the king. He carries the
play forward with his genuine and meaningful interventions.

How are you? Hope you are well. I am fine here. How were your Christmas holidays? How is your
family? Do you want to know how I spent my holidays? I was very busy at that time. We organised our
English club fest on 3rd January. The main attraction of the fest was the staging of the play- ''The Beggar
and the King'' by Winthrop Parkhurst. The play is based on the theme poverty and suffering. There are only
three characters. The king, servant and a beggar. The title of the play is bit amazing. It gives a clue to the
entire play, as it challenges the popular notion that the King is more important than the Beggar. Here the
king tries to silence the beggar. Towards the end of the play the Beggar overpowers the King. The king even
says; How! Am I afraid of a Beggar?'' The play begins with the cry of the Beggar; ''Bread, Bread, Bread,
Give me some bread.'' We see the king and servant on the stage. The beggar appears only later. The beggar's
cry for bread annoys the king. The king occupies the seat of power with the least concern for the poor.
Beggar is not an ordinary person; he is determined to fight for his rights. His words anticipate the impending
revolutionary movements against dictatorship.
. I Acted the role of the beggar, may be the most important character of the play. My friends and
teachers remarked that my acting was so good. Anyway I too feel satisfied. If you have time you shall read
this play. It has some contemporary relevance.

few words on Centers of power that are engaged in exploitation need to restricted.
Centers of power of all times have tried to silence their subjects. An ideal ruler must cater to the
needs of his subjects. There is a famous proverb which says, As the king is, so is the subject. When we
look back to history, we can find stories of rulers who tried to exploit the people to conquer the world and
become dictators. Our India too was under the exploitation of the British for about a century and half. The
play by Winthrope Parkhurst, we come across a kind who is deaf even to the basic need of beggar. He tries
to silence him by gaging him torturing him and even killed him. But the beggar comes back to life. Even
though his tongue is cut off he grows another in its place. This indicates that revolution cannot be
suppressed.
Finally in the play the beggar takes over the king. It seems that the play ends without any concrete
solution because the issue raised in it remains unsolved in the real word. So my dear friends lets us hope for
a nation which considers the needs of its people, which treat its people equal irrespective of any
discrimination. Let join hands together to build such a nation.

beggar haunts the king is in some ways his downfall, as he is powerless to a beggar.

was speechless, dump. I didn't know what to say. He was such a kind man to give that wonderful
cage. He didn't charge for the cage. So truthful in his dealings. The cage was something I longed

Balthazars marvelous afternoon is a very touching short story written by the well known Columbian novelist,
Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The main character of the story is Balthazar, a carpenter who made a very beautiful cage for
a boy named Pepe. Pepe, a small boy ordered a cage. When finished many people came to see the cage. All
appreciated it, saying that it was the most beautiful cage in the entire world. His wife suggested him that he should ask
sixty pesos for it. A physician, Octavio Giraldo exclaimed that it was really a flight of imagination. He requested
Balthazar to give him the cage. Balthazar responded it was sold for sixty pesos to Jose Montiel. Balthazar took the
cage to Jose Montiel's house. Mrs. Montiel also appreciated the cage. But Jose Montiel lost his temper when Balthazar
told him Pepe had ordered the cage. He scolded his son severely and told Balthazar that he should have consulted him
before he made the cage. He handed over the cage to Balthazar telling him that he should sell it somewhere else. At
this Pepe began to roll on the floor and cry. Balthazar gave the cage to Pepe without receiving money and left the
place. Here the writer draws a pathetic figure of Balthazar in the readers mind. Balthazars friends thought that he
was paid for the cage. In the pool hall they gave him a warm reception. He told them he got sixty pesos for the cage.
Having completely drunk, he began to talk rapturously of his dream. That is the fabulous project of making a million
cages and selling them for sixty pesos. His wife Ursula waited for him with tasty dishes. Balthazar spent so much
money for the treat to his friends that he had to leave his watch as a pawn with the promise to pay next day. Then he
lay spread eagled in the street as if he were dead till next morning. The story is not that of a cage maker and a small
boy alone. In Balthazar we see a true artist who loves art for its own sake, and not for money. He gave the cage to
Pepe without getting a single penny. We cannot see persons like him in todays life, where we see only the
commercialisation of art. Even though we feel pity for Balthazar we cant but appreciate the true artist in him. The
writer has succeeded fully in picturing such a graceful picture of Balthazar
The story clearly shows that art has a powerful authority in society, but ownership of fine art is often the
prerogative of the wealthy. Art is an envoy that carries many messages. The purpose of it is to convey meaning and it
does so in numerous ways. It glorifies or chastises, it immortalizes or angers, it hails or rejects, it evokes sadness or
ecstasy, it reflects the worst or best of humanity. The quintessence of an artists life is recognition of his ability and
works of art. Had Balthazar merely given his cage, which he incidentally did not consider a work of art, to some
ordinary person, he would not have received any recognition beyond mere gratitude and his life would have continued
its monotonous doldrums. By his manipulative actions , he managed to gain a moment of glory in his life, albeit with
negative financial rewards.

Balthazar's Marvelous Cage
Columbia: Balthazar, a village carpenter made a marvelous bird's cage. The news of the cage spread and a
crowd formed in front of his house yesterday afternoon. People say that it was the most wonderful cage they
have ever seen. Balthazar took two weeks time to make this cage. He started working with cages from a very
young age. The cage is really big that it looks like a small-scale model of a gigantic ice factory, with its
enormous dome of wire, three stories inside, with passageways and compartments especially for eating and
sleeping and with swings in the space set aside for the birds' recreation. It is said the he made the cage at the
order of Pepe son of Jose Montiel, a rich man in the village.
