Dear Colleagues,
Whilst conducting research for the 2015 conference, it became clear that
there was a significant gap that the community wanted filling.
The conversation kept returning to operational efficiency and how the
management of infrastructure, energy and water had become one of the
most pressing issues of our time. As an inescapable responsibility that the
deployed force must now face up to, I was surprised to find so little coverage
of these issues in the marketplace.
It is therefore with great pleasure that I introduce you to Defence IQs Military
Engineering 2015 conference; the forum that bridges the gap by creating
a business environment where the end-user and the solution provider
can come together to tackle the mission-critical challenges of operational
efficiency and force sustainment, head on.
By juxtaposing the ever-changing role of the future for the military engineer
with the experiences of recent operations, it is the ambition of the conference
to highlight lessons learned and CONOPS in order to better support
operational efficiency drives of the future, whilst also maintaining a special
focus on the technology helping us to apply this efficiency worldwide.
Expect guest presentations to consider the latest developments in strategic
and tactical applications of engineering solutions, feedback from forward
operating bases used for recent operations, and international perspectives
on the transformation of the relationship between military operations and
energy. The insight proves yet more fascinating when placed into the context
of both national and collaborative efforts!
In addition our speakers will also address the challenges of providing support
to disaster relief contingencies and how the role of the engineer has evolved
to become the point of engagement between countries, communities and
militaries.
The Military Engineering 2015 conference represents an excellent opportunity
to meet international colleagues, benchmark success, and to build
relationships with other militaries and the vendor community.
We will be welcoming operators from across Europe, North America and the
world to participate in practical discussions around common challenges and
available solutions and I invite you to share in this with us.
I am looking forward to welcoming you in February!
Kind Regards,

Graphene in Military Engineering and Defence, Beyond the Sticky Tape
- From Production to Applications
Workshop Leader: Dr Ania Servant, National Graphene Institute
This workshop will provide critical information on the potential of Graphene for military engineering applications including its scientific
properties and significance for energy generation and storage;future construction materials, chemical detection including IEDs,
infrastructure, mobility vehicles, purification, power storage.
Why Graphene?

Attend the workshop to:

Fascination with this material stems from its remarkable physical properties
and the potential applications these properties offer for the future. Although
scientists knew that one atom thick, two-dimensional crystal graphene
existed; no-one had worked out how to extract it from graphite. That was until
it was isolated in 2004 by two Russian-born researchers at The University of
Manchester, Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov.

Gain a comprehensive understanding of graphene as a revolutionary new

material with extraordinary potential for the defence sector

Graphene is the worlds first 2D material. Since its isolation in 2004 it has
captured the attention of scientists and researchers worldwide. It is ultralight, yet incredible tough. It is 200 times stronger than steel, yet incredibly
flexible. It is fire resistant yet retains heat. It is a superb conductor, yet not
even helium can pass through it.
When graphene is used alone or combined with other materials or
substances the possibilities are infinite. Graphene absorbs light and retains
it as energy. Add this to strength and flexibility and bendable mobile phones
and cameras with enormous battery life are ever closer. So are wearable
electronics, clothing that communicates, and solar cells made which could
double the maximum efficiency of silicon cells.
So, in summary, Graphene:
Protects and conducts. It means advanced paints could both reduce
corrosion and increase energy efficiency.
Detects. It could create sensors that can detect even minute traces of
gases or dangerous chemicals, or sustainable food packaging that can let
you know when food has gone off.
Has enormous potential when used as a membrane to separate liquids.
It could see huge progress in water purification and treatment, and even
provide more efficient desalination plants.
Has low weight and high strength. Harnessed with polymers and
composites it could make numerous forms of transport safer and more
fuel efficient.
Could revolutionise medicine. Nanotechnology is set to transform medical
procedures. Drugs could be delivered to specific targeted cells. Graphene
could pave the way for a step change in the treatment of cancer and
conditions such as Parkinsons.
Benefits of Attending
Graphene is transitioning from a material for research and development
and fast becoming an essential component of military equipment that will
transform capabilities and improve operational effectiveness. For the military
engineer, understanding this material and how it can be applied will support
your role enabling, sustaining, protecting and powering the mission.

Discover the applications of graphene from membranes and graphene

based structures for energy storage in the form of batteries and
supercapacitators
Expand your knowledge and understanding of the cutting-edge science
underpinning the material that will soon be part of every-day military
equipment and engineering
Interact with global subject matter experts and consider the potential of
graphene for infrastructural solutions
Workshop Leader Bio: Dr Ania Servant, Knowledge Exchange Fellow,
National Graphene Institute, University of Manchester
After completing her Master of Sciences (MSc.) from the Ecole Nationale
Superieure de Chimie de Paris and a Master of Research (MRes.) from
Pierre et Marie Curie University Ania was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship
to pursue a PhD training in Queen Mary University on the development of
novel micro/nanoparticles for catalysis and biomimetic applications. Following
the completion of her PhD in June 2010, Ania worked as a post-doctoral
research associate for over two years in the Nanomedicine Lab at UCL
School of Pharmacy, under the supervision of Professor Kostas Kostarelos.
There her work focussed on functionalising carbon nanomaterials including
graphene and carbon nanotubes for biomedical applications such as novel
delivery vectors and diagnostic agents. In November 2012, she was awarded
a EPSRC Post-doctoral Fellowship to pursue her studies for another year in
the Nanomedicine lab on the development of injectable graphene hydrogel
hybrids for on-demand drug delivery.
Ania has been the Knowledge Exchange fellow for the National Graphene
Institute (NGI) since December 2013. In this role she is responsible
for generating opportunities for knowledge exchange between the NGI
and industrial and commercial partners as well as participating in the
development of a sustainable, long term knowledge exchange capability
within the institute. As such, she is involved in conducting a number of
short term applied projects in partnership with a diverse range of industrial
partners looking to investigate the use of graphene and its derivatives for
a range of applications. In addition, she is involved in co-ordinating larger
scale externally funded knowledge exchange application projects as well as
contributing to these projects in collaboration with colleagues from the School
of Materials, Physics, Computer Science, Bio and Life Sciences, and other
university departments.

Future developments are expected to further revolutionise the world of

military engineering and graphenes potential applications will affect every
area of an engineers responsibility by changing the materials used for
construction, the vehicles used for mobility, the management of power and
energy efficiency, and even by changing the way that water is purified. It
can also be used for detecting dangerous chemicals including those used in
improvised explosive devices!
