Section Breaks with Page Numbering

Title Page

First Setup the title page, choose a format that is applicable to your report.
Abstracts in the title page seldom ever mix with engineering reports.
Abstracts need to have their own separate heading
Select the Insert Tab

Select Cover Page, and choose one of the following selection

Enter the field information, modify the format, and remove the abstract

Section Breaks

When setting up a format for the first time it is often helpful to think ahead
In this exercise we will have 3 section breaks:
Title Page
Front Matter (meant for: Abstract, Table of Contents, Table of Figures, etc.)
Main Body
Move to the page 2 (the blank page), and select the first line with the cursor
In the Word Document Select Page Layout Tab

Continuous Section Break

Select the following: Breaks>Continuous Section Break

Insert a Next Page Section Break

Select the following: Breaks>Next Page Section Break

Insert Page Numbering

Select the Insert Tab

Select Page Number and choose an appropriate Style

A New Tab called Heading and Footer Tools


Scroll Down to Section 3

Unlink Section 3

In Section 3 Un select Link to Previous. Once this is done it will no longer be


highlighted.
This will allow you to have different page numbering properties

Adjust Page Numbering Style for Section 3

Format Page Numbers: Page Numbers>Format Page Numbers

Change the Page numbering Start at: from 0 to 1> Select OK

Unlink & Adjust Page Number Style for Section 2

Scroll to Section 2, select Page 2 with the cursor


In Section 2 Un select Link to Previous. Once this is done it will no longer be
highlighted.

Format Page Numbers: Page Numbers>Format Page Numbers


Change the following:
Number format: from 1, 2, 3, to i, ii, iii
Page numbering Start at: from 0 to i> Select OK

Adjust Page Number Style for Section 1

Scroll to Section 1, select the Page number with the cursor (Title Page), and
remove it with the delete key.

Any immediate previous sections that were not unlinked will have their page
numbers removed
Now you have 3 sections:
No Page Numbering in the Title Page
Non-numerical page numbering in the front matter
Numerical page numbering in the main body
