LinkedIn Makes It Easier to Find a Job

As you likely know, LinkedIn is the largest professional networking site. I'm a longtime fan, so I was eager to see
whether its enhancements for job seekers were merely hype or truly helpful.
The New Job-Hunting Features Are Free
In case you're thinking, "What's this going to cost me?" I'm happy to say, not a dime.
While LinkedIn does offer its paying Premium members a suite of extras, you can have a free account with access to
the new LinkedIn Jobs page enhancements. You won't be able to filter searches by salary, though; that's reserved for
Premium members. But you will be able to search by ZIP code, industry, job functions and experience.
Whether you're actively engaged in a job search or happily employed but open to new opportunities, I think you
owe it to yourself to check out LinkedIn Jobs. You get to it on LinkedIn.com by clicking on the Find Jobs button
underneath the blue Jobs tab.
LinkedIn Profile Tips for Job Searchers
Add details about your work experiences. The more descriptive you are about your accomplishments,
responsibilities and skills, the more relevant the "suggested" jobs will be and the higher the odds that recruiters will
find you.
Include relevant volunteer experiences on your profile. Did you raise money for your children's school? Help
organize a ball for a charity? You might think these efforts don't belong in your LinkedIn resume, but that may not
be true.
The more job-related skills you include on your profile, the greater the likelihood that the "suggested jobs" feature
will return interesting options to consider. Don't list every little volunteer job you've held, but do include ones that
could matter. Work is work, regardless of whether you got paid for it. Over 70 percent of hiring managers surveyed

by LinkedIn said they considered volunteer work as legitimate work experience.

Beef up your LinkedIn network. You need at least 50 connections for LinkedIn to be truly effective. Take
advantage of the site's search capabilities to locate people in your college alumni network as well as former coworkers, colleagues and friends. "Start with your low-hanging fruit and build out from there," Williams says. Don't
forget to share frequently by posting helpful articles, links and updates on LinkedIn. Your connections will
appreciate it - and they'll be more likely to refer you if they hear of a job opening at work.

Exercise:
Visit LinkedIn.com as a guest and examine the opportunities it could offer you. Write an email to a friend who has
already been working for several years, mentioning LinkedIn and asking him/her what recommendations he/she
could make about how to create your LinkedIn profile. List your abilities and competencies, taken from the CV you
created in an earlier assignment.

Finding a Job Abroad

I want to work abroad. What is the first step I should take?

Before you start searching for a new job abroad, consider an international assignment with the company you work
for now if that is possible. If there are no opportunities within your company, your first step might be to find a new
job with an international firm in your home country. Signal that you are interested in a posting abroad. However,
you should stay within your own field of work. Do what you know!
How can I find out about international jobs in my field?
One way is to use a career search engine on the Internet. You can also view the jobs that are listed online by national
employment offices or with the electronic versions of local newspapers. Usually, jobs are listed in the classifieds
section. Or, you might want to look at a particular companys Internet site for openings. To make the search for
information easier, choose a target country, region or city. Use an international job-search site.
www.monster.com
www.careerbuilder.com
Or one from your target country:
www.timesonline.co.uk (UK)
www.employmentservice.gov.uk (UK)
jobs.guardian.co.uk (UK)
www.washingtonpost.com (US)
jobmarket.nytimes.com/(US)
www.canadajobsearch.com (Canada)
Another possibility is to post your rsum on a job site. If you have the qualifications an employer or recruiter is
looking for, they will probably contact you.
Where else can I look?
Go to the international newsstand at any major airport or train station for newspapers and magazines published in
other countries. The help-wanted sections of quality newspapers sometimes include advertisements for postings
abroad, as do some magazines. There are also many good books and brochures on finding work abroad. Some
organizations publish useful books, with lists of contact addresses for going abroad, whether for an internship, an
intercultural program, or for temporary or full-time positions.

Before Writing the Cover Letter

After you've gotten an employer's attention, the content of your cover letter must convince an employer to interview
you.
I always think of cover letters being much like the opening and closing statements that attorneys give when
representing a client in court. Before making such statements attorneys carefully analyze facts that prove why their
clients should win - just as your cover letter should do.
They structure and prioritize their arguments for maximum impact and you want to do the same thing with your cover
letters. To build a convincing case of your qualifications it's important that you analyze and address each employer's
needs in your cover letters.

Most job seekers write very weak cover letters that don't build a convincing case for their qualifications. By following
the strategies you're about to learn you'll create powerful cover letters that put you way ahead of your competition.

1. Pretend that you want to apply for the position shown below and need to write a cover letter.

file://D:\Unit1_v\index.html

2014.02.10.

Unit1_v

2. On a scrap piece of paper, make a list of the personal traits, characteristics and abilities you think would be
important to put in your cover letter in response to this ad.

The Job Ad:

DRIVER / DELIVERY PERSON 2+ years experience driving and delivering high value products in the London
Metropolitan area. Customer Service experience dealing with corporate accounts required. Salary 15,000 Pounds.
Resume to: Mr. Jefferson Perry, Personnel, WeDeliver Co., 68547 Queens Road, Harwick, XE Q98212
How many personal traits and skills did you list?
Many job seekers often come up with a list like the one below:

1. Makes friends easily

2. Dependable
3. Trustworthy
4. Likes to deal with customers
5. Accounting skills

Which of the lists below do you think will be more likely to grab an employer's attention in a cover letter for this ad?

This cover letter exercise illustrates why most people write such weak cover letters.

Job seekers often seem to relate to what the employer wants to hear, like those in the left column, but such cover letters
fall short because they don't address the specific skills employers are requesting.
The 5 skills in this very small job ad are an excellent example of why analyzing job ads to write powerful cover letters is
so important.

You should focus on any job ad you read. The 5 skills required to get this job and which therefore MUST BE INCLUDED
IN YOUR COVER LETTER!!! are those in the column below.

However, the ad asks for 5 specific skills and areas of knowledge which are listed here:

1) 2 + Years Driving Experience

2) Delivering high value products
3) in the London Metropolitan Area
4) Customer Service experience
5) with Corporate Accounts

Write your own cover letter

On the basis of the job ad below, use what you learned in the previous sections to write your own cover
letter:

Reading Task 3: Finding a Job

Finding a Job
Introductory discussion questions:
1. Have you ever sought employment? What kind of job were you looking for? How did you go about your
search?
2. Do you have a CV? How did you learn to write one?
3. What careers interest you for your own future? Why?
Read the text below about finding a job:
Need to find a job? Here's how to find a job fast.
There are several steps you can take to find a new job, including where to look for jobs, the top job sites, how to use
your connections to get a job.
Focus Your Job Search
Use the job search engines to find jobs by using keywords that match your interests and the location where you
want to work. Narrowing your search criteria will help you focus your job search and will give you more relevant job
listings to review and less non-relevant job listings to weed through.
Build your brand
Create profiles on LinkedIn, Facebook, and VisualCV. A strong personal brand that portrays you in a professional
light will provide recruiters, employers, and contacts with a strong positive impression of you as a candidate they
should be interested in.
Connect With Your Contacts
Now that you've created profiles on networking sites, use them. Connect with everyone you know, because you
never know which contact may be able to help you with your job search or put you in touch with someone who can.
Use Job Search Tools
There are a variety of online tools that will help expedite your job search and manage your career. Use them to
organize your job search and save valuable job searching time.
Create a List of Companies
Do you have a list of companies you would like to work for? It's a good idea to research company information and
create a list of companies to target in your job search. All the information you need is available on the web, and it's
easy to find detailed information about potential employers online.
Target Your Resume and Cover Letter
It's important to take the time to write targeted resumes and cover letters that specifically link your qualifications to
the hiring criteria for the jobs you are applying for. The hiring manager will be able to see, at a glance, why, and how,
you are qualified for the job. You'll have a much better chance of getting an interview than if you send a generic
letter and resume.

Reading Task 3: Job Hunting

Reading Activity - Job Hunting

An employee's guide to job hunting

JOB SEARCH: If youre tired of your current job or feel it is not fulfilling, perhaps its time to look for another one.
And heres the good news: already having a job makes the search for a new one considerably less stressful.
Thanks to the internet and flexible working models, looking for a job while you are employed is easier than it used
to be. You can do everything electronically and people are far more flexible, says Clive Davis, a director at the
international recruitment firm Robert Half. [Recruiters] will also often see you outside of normal working hours,
Davis told the Financial Times.
Corinne Mills, managing director of Personal Career Management, adds, Its always easier to look for a job while
youre employed there are so many networking opportunities with suppliers, customers, conference and so on.
You also have more confidenceIt's always easier to look for a job while you're employed."
If you need to meet a potential employer during your regular working hours, dont lie and say you have a doctors
appointment, Mills advises. You can get caught out and that can lead to disciplinary measures. Its better just to say,
I have a personal matter to deal with. Or dont say anything. Just explain that you need to come in late.
It may not be a good idea to tell your current employer that you are looking for another job, says Justin Spray of
Mendas, a business psychology firm. Some will immediately limit your opportunities or react very emotionally. But
if you feel your employer will not overreact, then be open, Spray advises. Having candid conversations with your
employer about your career aims should be part of your relationship with your manager, he says. A good way of
starting might be to tell your boss that youve been approached by a headhunter.
When talking to a potential employer, be careful how much information you reveal about your current workplace. Some companies
simply talk to the staff of the competition without intending to actually hire them.

1. What elements would you require to make a job fulfilling for you?
2. What elements would make your job stressful?
3. In English, for what kinds of organizations can the word recruitment be used? Why?
4. Provide synonyms for the term managing director.
5. Explain the phrase to get caught out. Provide synonyms.
6. Look up the term business psychology on the Internet. What does it mean and how is it practiced?
7. Explain the term candid conversation. Is it positive or negative?
8. What are your career aims in the next 5 years? In ten years?

Dumb and dumber?

QUALIFICATIONS: Claiming to be better

Employers may be

line with the whole job search is that you dont get

"Don't get yourself into a situation where you

Jean Zacher, owner of JobCanada.org, has mixed

about dumbing down CVs. I dont see anything wrong
with leaving

should put down what youve done. You dont necessarily put down the whole
. You need to explain why do
you want this job, this specific job.
Still, Zacher says there is no need to
all of your expectations permanently on hold. I understand we need dollars,
and many of us have had to do
we dont want to do, but maybe you should be looking at the employment
agencies and taking
placements until you can find what you really want.
Alan Kearns says dumbing down a CV is quite different from
it. Padding a rsum means employers are
bringing you in and expecting you to have a certain
set. Dumbing down is just positioning yourself at a layer
below your potential. The employer is actually going to get more value.
