The labour intensive clothing industry have been shifting its businesses
from western countries to Japan in the 1950s, to Korea and Taiwan in
the 60s/70s, to ASEAN countries in the 80s/90s and
currently to China and India and the trend

Based on projected growth of about 8% in Indian textile industry, the Punjab


textile industry may almost double in next 5-6 years with an additional investment
of about Rs.18000 crore and
can create additional employment for 8 lacs people in the State

Govt. need to recognise the importance of skill
development for the textile and garment industry’s success

„ Skill Development Board under Technical & Science Department

„ Prepare a white paper on Apparel related operative skills required to work


on advanced machines with the help of experts working in the industry

„ Revise the training contents of ITIs and polytechnics to meet the modern
day needs with the help of experts and stake holders

„ Upgrade and equip the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) with latest
machines for providing the specialised training in the textile and garment
related skill

„ Let private entrepreneurs have a stake to manage ITIs
