Music 12 (2014/2015)

Mrs K. Greene kgreene@gnspes.ca

Welcome! This semester of making, creating, presenting, listening, and researching music
promises to be awesome. Grade 12 music has three components, and each component has
one or more categories:
Component 1 Music Making
Category 1: Performance
Category 2: Improvisation
Category 3: Composition
Component 2 Music Literacy
Category 1: Theory/Music writing
Category 2: Aural skill development
Component 3 Creating Context
Category 1: Listening and Research
Many of the curriculum outcomes in Music 12 will be explored using projects, both individual
and group projects, as well as large and small ensemble participation. You will build a portfolio
over the course of the semester. Your grading rubric is as follows:

Music Making 35%

o Year-long participation in a school ensemble (or another,
approved large ensemble)
o Small-ensemble or solo work
o In-class work with improvisation and composition projects.
o Specific skill-levels testing on personal instrument/voice
Music Literacy 25%
o Ear-training (intervals, scales, triads)
o Written Theory (to the level of RCM Advanced Rudiments)
o Improved sight-reading skills
Listening/Research 30%
o Projects designed to demonstrate critical thinking, connecting
skills, the ability to explore the music of others, and more. Your PORTFOLIO will
be very important here.
Personal Goal 10%
o You will set your personal, music-related goal at the beginning of
the semester. You will track your progress, including journal entries in your
portfolio. At the end of the semester, you will demonstrate what you have
accomplished.

Although Music 11 is a semester-ed class, it is expected that students participate in their chosen
ensemble for the entire school year. Concert dates are posted on the Music Department web
site. Solo or ensemble performances may occur in January or June.

Parent Contact
My preferred form of communication is through email (kgreene@gnspes.ca), although I also use
text messages (902-798-6355), Face Book messaging, and the old-fashioned telephone! (902757-0151) I use the program called Remind to text little reminders to students about
homework, assignments, etc. You are welcome to join that list, using the instructions above. The
Music Department web site (www.music.charliegreene.ca) has information about monthly
meetings, the up-coming trip, and other bits of useful information. The Music Department
calendar (http://avrsb-cal.ednet.ns.ca/hhsmusic) outlines rehearsal and performance dates, and
any other pertinent items of interest. Please feel free to contact me with questions about the
program or about your students progress, or about volunteering with the Music Parents
Association.
