Observation
Events in 2013
Taken from 75 event forms completed at the SWME14 meeting in Plymouth April 4th
Responses type and then grouped under categories
There are lots of 'linked' items e.g. Storms and litter, storms and beaches etc
There are about 280 observations - some have been duplicated to fit into distinct categories where different species groups were mentioned n the same report
I have attempted some grouping of responses within each category - eg Birds and PIBs, sunfish, but none in the storm effects
I will be writing to people shortly about the outcomes of the ideas on a SWME report
Results
Clearly the winter storms and effects on beaches, birds etc have had a very profound effect on the inshore environment - 66 comments
The remarkable cold start to 2013, followed by the very 'warm' summer (everything's relaitve)
The comparison with 2013 and previous years seems to be providing some marked contrasts
Remarkable numbers of ocean sunfish, jellyfish blooms
The PIB Bird incident - wide resonance/awareness through the region - 17 comments

Cold start affects sea water temperature - fell for 2 months afer end of February when it should
have risen. May have affected breeding of seabed species. Very few trigger fish turned up

Weather
North Devon inter-tidal beach profiles completely altered by sediment movements. 1-2m higher
than usual, filling rock pools and gullies. Difficult to judge full impact on sessile species as yet,
most presumed dead. Abundant low shore Limpet scars unoccuppied, some sand dwellers
disturbed. Kelps trashed which may be why Blue rayed limpets abundant but feeding on Serrated
wrack. North sheltered shores apparently less affected

Weather/Ecology
Summer rainfall up = lower salinity for much longer than usual = huge damage to harbours and
marina ops. In Chichester (E.Sussex) due to huge population influx and rapid growth of tube
building polychaete (will remember the name later!). Similar sights in SW?

Storms in 2014
Effect on seashore and seabed life have been 'patchy' and, although there have been 'wash-outs'

2013-much sand covered rocks so species eg anemones buried deep. 2014-severe storms scoured
rocks, removed sand and trashed rockpool habitats. Not much survived. Previously rich rockpools
are now deserts!

Beach profiles at Godrevy Mutton Cove changed in a fortnight - rock platorm exposed and
recovered in 2 weeks. Others still not recovered at Godrevy Cove

Storms - Management
Issues
Weather - Devon. Fishing - Lyme Regis. Storms have offset a lot of the pots from the Lyme
Regis/West Bay fishermen, causing a huge loss of profit for fishermen as they have to use their
time for fishing to try and find all of their pots - could cause problems of marine debris

gone from Westward ho! leaving mud and clay, similar at Porlock - both have long pebble ridges
which have been moved dramatically inland

Thanks to unusual and extreme weather conditions in late 2013, the effects of ships washing out
their tanks offshore was brought starkly home to everyone. The large number of dead birds
washing up following the continuous storms in early 2014 also further illustrates how vulnerable
these species can be to stochastic events. Whilst we can't control the stochastic events in the
short term, we can attempt to limit the anthropogenic causes of mortality in these species,
making them more robust to endure the natural events

Public confusion over cod stocks. Announcement that levels have recovered, then they hadn't.
Poor communication and bad reporting.
Marine litter
The winter storms of winter 2013/14 have also played a part in drawing attention to the marine
litter issue. Marine litter was brought ashore in certain places in greater quantities than usual.
Could be as a result f storms bringing it onshore or could partly be as a result of greater litter
input via flooding inland

As public volunteers we have spent hours trying to work out how to submit our data for
