hosted a meeting between provincial fisheries biologists
and citizens on Monday night, February 23. The West
Arm Outdoors Club President, Gord Grunerud, introduced the meeting, several provincial biologists gave the
presentation, and Josh Smienk moderated the question
period. The provincial biologists share the concern of citizens and groups with the state of the fishery in Kootenay
Lake. The biologists included their proposed next steps to
address the problem, and their plan will be reviewed by a
panel of scientists over the next month. To get a copy of

Saturday, March 7 at 13215 Hwy 31, Meadow Creek. The
Meadow Creek Wetland Restoration project is unique as
it improves habitat for amphibians, birds, ungulates, and
for sow grizzlies and cubs in need of early spring forage.
Volunteers wanted! As optional activities you can plant
a tree, tour the site, spread some seeds even help install a
nesting box. Join us at the Halleran property to learn about
wetland values and how you as a private landowner can
make a difference for our ever-threatened wetland habitats.

Position Summary: The goal of the program assistant
will be to provide administrative support, logistical
support and community outreach to facilitate efficient operation of Job Options BC - West Kootenays.
This includes providing information and assistance to
participants and businesses. Applicant will have front
desk experience in receiving, directing incoming calls,
emails, handling requests for information, providing
administration and database support. Position requires
demonstrated ability to take initiative and exercise
sound judgment, tact, diplomacy and patience when
dealing with clients. There will be some job coaching,
assisting clients in the use of resources and technology
for job search activities and mentoring in the workplace
for Job Options BC - West Kootenays participants.
There are a total of 217 contract hours (part time hours)
over a 14 week period at an hourly rate of $18.00. The
weekly schedule will be determined at time of hiring. The start date for the position is March 16, 2015
and will end on June 13, 2015.
Successful candidate will have post-secondary education, along with good oral, written, facilitation and
interpersonal skills. Must be competent in MS Office,
able to drive and have access to a car.

Ethel Jones
E thel passed away with family by her side
at the Victorian Community Health Centre

of Kaslo at the age of 91. She is survived by
her sons The Jones Boys, Terry (wife Dina)
of Woodbury, Rick (partner Heather) of Mirror Lake, Lex (wife Gail) of Kaslo; grandchildren Terry (Karla) of Seattle, Alicia of Richmond,
Casey (Shane) of Kaslo, Nick (Dezz) of Invermere,
Chad of Kaslo; great-grandchild Jason of Seattle; sister
Dody Thompson of North Vancouver.
Ethel is predeceased by her daughters Susie in 1958 and
Ann in 1972, and by her husband Fred of 65 years in 2010.
Ethel was one of a kind; when folks met her, they never
forgot her. Her friendly but inquisitive nature would
often get more information out of someone than they
knew about themselves! Whether it was during Fred and
Ethels earlier years in Kaslo (1951 to 1973), later years in
Oliver (1974 to 2013), or the time spent at the cabin up
beloved Mount Baldy, she would uplift everyone around
her. Summer and fall Ethel would be found enjoying the
outdoors either riding her bike, walking, or working on
her and Freds three acre yard in Willowbrook.

Winter was spent at Mount Baldy where Ethel would be the first skier on the chair lift and
the last one off, only stopping at the cabin
to check on Fred. Ethel skied until her knee
stopped her from doing so at the age of 88.
2013 brought Ethel back home to Kaslo
where she resided at the Victorian Community Health Centre. It was so nice having her with us
rekindling old friendships and being close to her family.
Ethel enjoyed spending time in the garden area visiting or sitting by the fish pond reading a book. Being so
active all her life, it was challenging for Ethel to adjust to
her constant knee pain. The staff at the care centre did
all they could to keep her as comfortable as possible, we
thank you all very much! Ethel was referred to as the
life of the party with her chatty personality; she kept
everyone on their toes.
Ethel suffered a stroke on January 28th, 2015 and after a
brief fight, she quietly passed on February 8th, 2015.
To know Ethel Jones was an honour that would be hard
to forget! She will truly be missed. There will be a celebration of life held in Kaslo this spring.

Stephen Harper: The Musical
This past year veteran Canadian singer/songwriter

James Gordons controversial and exciting new one-man,
one-puppet show has had successful runs in his hometown of Guelph, ON, as well as in Hamilton, Ottawa, London, Kitchener, Windsor, Orillia, Brantford, Toronto, and
a blitz of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the
North West Territories.
As you can imagine from the title, this play examines
our current Canadian political climate and in particular
our Crime Minister Stephen Harper. With humour, political commentary, pathos, 20 original songs, spoken word,
hundreds of projected images and videos, audience participation, and an activists passion to show where we are
and where we can go as a nation, this work has special
relevance as we head into an election year.
So many Canadians are feeling that their voice is not
being heard under the Harper Government. What can
we do about this? Audiences can find out, and have fun
enjoying a theatrical evening with this production.
Audiences will be familiar with James Gordon for his
work as a singer-songwriter, with 40 albums to his credit
over a thirty year international career. His current CD
Coyotes Calling reached #2 on the Canadian national
roots radio airplay charts. The album includes songs from
Stephen Harper: The Musical. His plays Hardscrabble
Road (about homeless and globalization issues), Nastee
Business (about the bottled water scam), and Tryst And
Snout (a hillbilly adaptation of A Midsummer Nights
Dream), established him as a skilled playwright with an
eye for using musical theatre as a vehicle for pointed social
commentary. Performing as resident songwriter for 12

years with two CBC radio shows, Basic Black and Ontario
Morning, honed his comedy skills; and 20 years with the
Canadian Folk Trio Tamarack gave him a nation-wide
outlet for his music about Canadas heritage and identity.
