Controlling the Trendnet TV-IP400W camera with ZoneMinder

I cant even r em em ber when was the l ast ti m e that I had to r ever se engi neer som ethi ng.. i t m ay have been as l ong ago as
m y col l ege days. But l ast week I had a coupl e of eveni ngs of fun fi gur i ng out the i nner wor ki ngs of m y Tr endnet
TV-IP400W. Thi s i s a cool l i ttl e i nter net cam er a wi th bui l t i n wi fi and a bui l t i n web ser ver . You can contr ol i t fr om a
br owser and you can actual l y pan and ti l t thi s cam er a ar ound the r oom , so even though the pi ctur e qual i ty i snt gr eat
(pr obabl y com par abl e to your aver age webcam ), i t can be ver y useful i f you want to keep an eye on your house, your pets,
your baby, etc fr om anywher e i n the wor l d. The best par t: you can pi ck one up onl i ne for l ess than $200, whi ch i s a steal for
a pan/ti l t IP cam er a.
The bui l t i n web ser ver i s useful for checki ng up on the l i ve si tuati on, but i t does not have any featur es to autom ati cal l y
noti fy som ethi ng or som eone i f m oti on i s detected i n fr ont of the cam er a. The wi ndows contr ol appl i cati on does do m oti on
tr i gger ed r ecor di ng, but i f you want to m oni tor your cam er a fr om outsi de your hom e youl l have to set i t up to em ai l al l the
vi deos to your sel f, as the wi ndows app cant functi on as a web i nter face.
Al l of thi s m akes thi s cam er a m or e of a toy, wi th l i m i ted r em ote m oni tor i ng featur es. But, I woul dnt be m e i f I di dnt
fi gur e out a way to get what I wanted fr om thi s thi ng. Si nce I al r eady have 2 Li nux boxes r unni ng Mi ster house, MythTV
and var i ous databases and devel oper tool s, I fi gur ed one of these boxes coul d easi l y functi on as a sur vei l l ance system as
wel l .
So I set out to i nstal l ZoneMi nder on m y Ubuntu system . ZoneMi nder i s an extr em el y ful l featur ed (open sour ce) vi deo
cam er a secur i ty and sur vei l l ance system . It suppor ts m ul ti pl e CCTV and IP cam er as, has a web i nter face, i t can contr ol
PTZ (Pan Ti l t Zoom ) cam er as, and suppor ts custom tr i gger s, m ul ti pl e m oti on z ones per cam er a, etc.
After a l i ttl e bi t of ti nker i ng I got ZoneMi nder r unni ng, and i t tur ned out that even getti ng i t to captur e vi deo fr om m y
Tr endnet cam tur ned out to be tr i vi al Al l I needed to do was to confi gur e the cam er a str eam to http://192.168 .0.140
/vi deo.cgi on m y hom e LAN!
Unfor tunatel y, thats as m uch as Id be abl e to do wi th ZoneMi nder and thi s cam . The IP400W uses a pr opr i etar y contr ol
pr otocol to m ove the cam er a and ther e wasnt any ZoneMi nder dr i ver for i t yet.
But how har d coul d i t be to wr i te one?

The cam er a al r eady cam e wi th a web i nter face wi th si m pl e for m buttons to contr ol m ovem ent, so I fi gur ed these
com m ands shoul d be easy to fake by a scr i pt. That wasnt the case though, si nce ther e wer e no di r ect http r equests fr om
the cam er a contr ol page: the page l oads a Java appl et and thi s appl et i s r esponsi bl e for al l TCP/IP com m uni cati on wi th the
cam er a.
After that fi r st l i ttl e hum p I fi gur ed I shoul d pr obabl y fi r st em ai l Tr endnet and ask them ni cel y for the pr otocol specs, but as
I m or e or l ess expected they wer ent abl e to gi ve m e that i nfo (booo). So m y onl y chance woul d be to r ever se engi neer the
pr otocol and wr i te m y contr ol scr i pt wi th what I l ear ned fr om that. Her es what I di d.. and i f your e not i nter ested i n how I
di d i t you can scr ol l str ai ght down to fi nd out how to get your own Tr endnet cam er a wor ki ng i n ZoneMi nder . If you j ust want

the contr ol page, but i t was sendi ng com m ands thr ough a Java appl et i nstead, by cal l i ng functi ons l i ke
m ovePanTi l tDegr ee() on the appl et. That wasnt goi ng to tel l m e m uch about the com m and pr otocol , so I i nstal l ed Jad,
saved the appl ets fr om m y cam on m y har ddi sk and star ted decom pi l i ng.
I had never actual l y decom pi l ed a j ava cl ass befor e and i t was pr etty i nter esti ng to see pr opr i etar y bi nar y-onl y softwar e
tur n back i nto sour ce code wi th Jad! Of cour se al l or i gi nal nam es of non-publ i c m ethods and var i abl es had been l ost, but
ther e wer e onl y a coupl e of pr i vate m ethods i n the cl ass, and m any of the m em ber var i abl es I coul d gi ve r eal nam es agai n
by l ooki ng at how they wer e used i n publ i c getter and setter m ethods. Unfor tunatel y Jad had pr obl em s decom pi l i ng par t of
the cl ass fi l e, so the r esul ti ng sour ce fi l e had som e gar bage i n ther e and I wasnt goi ng to be abl e to r un the code i n a
debugger to r eal l y see what com m ands i t woul d gener ate. But i n any case i t was cl ear what ur l s i t uses for contr ol , for
adm i ni str ati on featur es and for the vi deo str eam , and what com m and par am eter s i t knows.

Decom pi l i ng the cam er as j ava appl et was ver y useful , but after seei ng that the appl et uses si m pl e HTTP POST r equests to
send com m ands to the cam er a, I r eal i z ed I m ay have been abl e to ski p al l of that and fi gur e out the (text based) pr otocol
wi th a si m pl e networ k sni ffer . So I i nstal l ed Eavesdr op on m y Mac, a handy l i tl e tool that wi l l tel l you exactl y what data i s
com i ng i nto and l eavi ng your system . (befor e al l of thi s I had tr i ed Fi r ebug, si nce that shoul d al so tel l you about al l
r equests l eavi ng Fi r efox, but as i t tur ns out Fi r ebug does not tr ack any r equests sent by j ava appl ets, onl y by htm l and
j avascr i pt code).
As soon as I fi r ed up Eavesdr op and star ted pl ayi ng wi th the IP400Ws contr ol pages, the answer s to m y questi ons star ted
r ol l i ng i n.
In l ess than an hour I had al l the com m ands wr i tten down and I was abl e to send basi c com m ands to the cam er a wi th a
si m pl e per l scr i pt.
Whi l e pl ayi ng wi th the par am eter val ues, i even found som e com m ands that ar ent possi bl e wi th the web i nter face. It tur ns
out the cam er a can be m oved di agonal l y as wel l (whi ch i s not possi bl e wi th the Tr endnets web i nter face, al though I thi nk i t
i s wi th the PC app) and ther e i s al so a swi ng m ode that m oves sl owl y fr om the extr em e l eft to the extr em e r i ght posi ti on
and back, stop for a second at ever y 10 degr ees or so.
Another i nter esti ng thi ng I l ear ned was that the z oom featur e i snt r eal l y suppor ted on the cam er a ser ver si de at al l .
When you change the vi ew m ode to 2x or 4x, i t i s the appl et i n your br owser that si m pl y m agni fi es the i m age. It was cl ear
fr om the pi ctur e degr adati on that the cam er a di dnt have an opti cal z oom , but i ts too bad that the di gi tal z oom i s done on
the cl i ent si de, si nce that m eans that ZoneMi nder wont have access to a z oom featur e, unl ess Id wr i te som e ser ver si de
scr i pt that can m ani pul ate the i ncom i ng vi deo str eam .

Wi th the IP400Ws contr ol pr otocol (m ostl y) decypher ed, i t was now ti m e to wr i te the ZoneMi nder contr ol scr i pt. For tunatel y,
that was the easy par t. ZoneMi nder has done an excel l ent j ob of cr eati ng a cam er a contr ol i nter face that shoul d be abl e to
suppor t contr ol l abl e cam er as wi th al m ost any set of featur es, by cal l i ng a scr i pt or exter nal pr ogr am wi th cer tai n
pr edefi ned par am eter s. Even better news, an exi sti ng contr ol scr i pt for a panasoni c IP cam er a showed m e how that i s
sendi ng HTTP GET com m ands to a Panasoni c cam er a wi th a si m i l ar set of featur es. Im not a Per l pr o at al l , but I coul d
handl e thi s one. Another hour l ater , I was contr ol l i ng m y Tr endnet cam thr ough ZoneMi nder !
Il l get to the poi nt now, because i f your e sti l l r eadi ng her e, your e pr obabl y al so an IP400W or IP400 owner who wants to use
i t wi th ZoneMi nder . Her es what to do:

1. Downl oad m y z m contr ol -tr endnet-i p400.pl scr i pt and i nstal l i t i n a di r ector y thats i n your path. On m y Ubuntu
system the other contr ol scr i pts wer e i nstal l ed i n /usr /l ocal /bi n so that woul d be a good spot to put thi s one as wel l .
Make sur e the scr i pt has execute per m i ssi ons so you m ay want to r un chm od 7 55 z m contr ol -tr endnet-i p400.pl
2. Thats r eal l y al l that shoul d be r equi r ed on the i nstal l ati on end. Now al l thats l eft i s to confi gur e ZoneMi nder to
Contr ol your Tr endnet. Fi r st, m ake sur e your ZoneMi nder confi gur ati on i s confi gur ed to contr ol PTZ cam er as. In the

3. If you havent done so yet, i ts ti m e to add your new m oni tor now. In the Gener al tab, gi ve your cam a nam e (m i ne

You pr obabl y want to change the Num Pr esets val ue to the actual num ber of pr esets that your e usi ng (the m ax i s 25), so
you dont end up wi th a bunch of buttons i n the contr ol page that dont do anythi ng.

too, then set up an FTP account for your tr endnet cam er a i n your NAS, go i nto your IP400s web confi gur ati on and
enter the account i nfo i n the confi gur ati onupl oad scr een. Make sur e to enabl e the checkbox enabl e upl oad vi deo to
