Third Sunday of Lent

John 2:13-25
"While he was in Jerusalem for the
feast of Passover, many began to
believe in his name when they saw
the signs he was doing." How we
would love to see those signs! How
easy it would be for us to believe if
we too could witness Jesus healing
the sick, feeding the multitudes,
calming the storm. We might be
inclined to think that we don't have
the same benefits as those first
believers, and so faith is harder in
our day and age. But is it, really?

Rev. Timothy Deutsch, Temporary Administrator

In truth, we have an advantage that

none of those people had: two
millennia of faithful, prayerful
Christians believing in Jesus and
spreading the Gospel; the collective
witness of the saints--many of
whom have also worked "signs" in
Jesus' name; the effects of the
church on culture and the world
through its schools, its hospitals, its
spiritual movements, and religious
institutions; the unbroken line of
apostolic succession that traces
back to the time of Christ. But even
with all of this testimony, it's
important to remember that seeing
signs and believing in Jesus are not
the same thing. Even those who
witnessed Jesus' miracles had to
take the next step by choosing to
accept him as their Lord. The point
is to encounter Jesus on a personal
level. The signs may open the door
to bring us closer to him, but it's up
to us to walk through that door.

ishop McElroy

Robert W. McElroy was born in San Francisco on February 5, 1954 to Walter and
Roberta McElroy. His family lived in Burlingame, CA where he and his three sisters
and brother attended and graduated from Our Lady of Angels School. During these
years, Bishop McElroy felt called to the Catholic priesthood. After high school in 1972, he entered Harvard
College and graduated three years later with a degree in American history. After his graduation from Harvard, Bishop McElroy attended graduate school at Stanford and in 1976 received a master's degree in American history. Entering the seminary in the Fall of 1976, Bishop McElroy attended Saint Patrick Seminary in
Menlo Park, CA and was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese on April 12, 1980. His first assignment was
Saint Cecilia Parish in San Francisco.
In 1982 Bishop McElroy became the secretary to San Francisco Archbishop John Quinn, who himself was
the first auxiliary bishop of San Diego. Archbishop Quinn asked Father McElroy to undertake graduate
studies in the field of Catholic Social Teaching, and thus Bishop McElroy obtained a licentiate in theology
from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, a doctorate in moral theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and a doctorate in political science from Stanford.
Bishop McElroy returned to Parish work, which has always been his first love, in 1989 serving as a parochial vicar at Saint Pius Parish in Redwood City. In 1995 Archbishop Quinn appointed Bishop McElroy vicar
general of the Archdiocese, a post he continued to hold under Cardinal William Levada, who succeeded
Archbishop Quinn.
In 1996, Bishop McElroy was made a prelate of honor by Saint John Paul II and appointed Pastor of Saint
Gregory Parish in San Mateo by Cardinal Levada, four years later he was appointed auxiliary bishop of San
Francisco by Pope Benedict XVI on July 6, 2010 and was consecrated by Archbishop George Niederauer at
Saint Mary's Cathedral on September 7, 2010. He became the Archdiocesan Vicar for Parish Life and Development and has served in that role until his appointment to be the next Bishop of San Diego. Bishop
McElroy has written two books: The Search for an American Public Theology and Morality and American
Foreign Policy. In addition, he was written a series of articles in America magazine touching upon key elements of Catholic social teaching. Bishop McElroy will be formally installed as the sixth Bishop of San Diego at a Mass to be celebrated at 1:00 pm at St. Therese of Carmel Parish on Wednesday, April 15 th. We pray
for his success.

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and; fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

WHAT IS JR. KINDERGARTEN?

For our purposes at Santa Sophia Academy, our
Junior Kindergarten is a SSA full day school
class/program for those students who are not yet
age eligible for Kindergarten by Diocesan and
State of California standards (5 years of age by September 1st). Students who have had 2 or more
years of preschool, are born between September
2010 and December 2010, and are ready for something a bit different, a different curriculum, and a
full school day here at the big school and all that
entails - well, this is the perfect program for you! It
is not part of our Preschool and is geared for students who might otherwise have a third or fourth
year in preschool or a first year in Early Kindergarten Program (or not, as many EAKs are closing) and want something more developmentally
appropriate to this younger childs needs. Wed
love to share all about our plans for this great
NEW program and invite anyone interested to
make an appointment for a tour and conversation
with Mrs. Laaperi on the great alternative to EAK
or a third year in preschool.

A Week of Prayers for Lenten Devotions

Every family and household is encouraged to take
a renewed look at the penitential practice of prayer this Lenten Season. Below is a suggested format for each day of the week for the six weeks of
Lent. If families gathered together once each day
for the intentions and prayer for that day, we will
have begun to deepen our understanding of our
baptismal promises, and will be more prepared to
renew these promises at an Easter liturgy. A parishioner living alone can also enter into this
prayer. Those bringing Holy Communion to the
homebound might consider calling one of the
homebound each day and praying over the phone
with them. There are many other creative ways to
build a habit of prayer throughout Lent that can
continue forever and ever Amen!
