However, as one of
the professors said: One thing is to know about PHL (reserachers, papers,
info, etc) and another very different stuff involves to be in contact with the
farmers and to see in real time how they manage PHL in their own country
and context. In this case, as I supposed all my classmates have also done, I
will examine in more depth the situation I have presented for week 2 peer
assessemnt.
So, I want to list the symptoms I identified as the most representative:
-
The interval between two harvesting seasons of most crops was about
7 - 9 months.
Farmers sell their crops soon after harvest. Cause: expenditure needs
(54 %),cash needs for school fees (38%), and perception of surplus
produce above storage capability (8%).
The food stock after one month (for maize crop) is less than a half ton
(of 1.2 tons harvested).
The major pests identified in the storage areas of most farmers were
larger grain borer (Proste- phanus truncatus), grain weevil (Sitophilus
granarius) and lesser grain borer (Rhizopertha dominica).
NOTE: The papers I linked above were downloaded with no payment due to
a convenant my local university has with Sciencedirect.
