ENTERPRISE MOBILITY

STRATEGY
A 7 Step Blueprint

OVERVIEW

Creating a solid enterprise mobility strategy

means asking the right questions.
Follow the 7-steps below to make the key
decisions that will inform an effective and
executable enterprise mobility strategy.

BUSINESS METRICS

What is the purpose of your mobility initiative?

Engage customers? Employees? Both? Others?
How are they currently engaging, and how will
your mobility strategy improve the business?
Set up business goals and metrics, such as call
centre calls reduction directly attributable to
mobile customer support self service app

PICK THE RIGHT PROCESSES

Focus on no more than 3-5 key candidate processes to

implement your mobility strategy.
Select processes which would benefit the most from
being engaged with via mobile devices.
Are any of these processes relevant enough to move the
business needle in the right direction? No point applying
mobility to a back-office process that runs once a
quarter and impacts only two individuals.

PICK KEY APPS

APIs are at the core of an effective mobility strategy.

Pick the right information access points into your
legacy systems.
Ensure they are optimized and secured in
preparation for serving data to the new mobility
front layer.
Consider introducing an integration layer.

IN-HOUSE OR OUTSOURCE?

Consider whether you will execute your strategy inhouse or not.

Factors affecting this include the, expertise and

availability of your IT team and APIs readiness.
Consider outsourcing / commissioning a mobile app
template, including the common features and
integration points.

Individual process owners can collaborate to design the

rest of the app.

PICK THE STANDARDS

Choose established standards in security,

authentication / authorization, communication
protocols, and development practices.

Consider any regulatory, legal or otherwise

mandatory standards that apply.
Selecting standards early in your strategy ensures
better compliance during execution.

CONTROL DATA, LIBERATE APP

Success of your mobility strategy depends heavily on

how reliable, timely and usable is the data to be
used by the mobile app.

Centralize control over the data and APIs that

manipulate it, but relinquish control over the app.
User interfaces and special feature sets can be
better decided by those closest to the process and
the end user.

SHORT DELIVERY CYCLES

End users employees, customers and other

stakeholders are used to mobile apps being
frequently updated.

Consider developing project plans that mimic the

startup world in launching with a minimum viable
product, and pivot or build up from there.
Release new features and fixes to production every
couple of weeks or so until the app matures enough.
