team.
Dharkenley district in Banaadir region of Mogadishu was last evening teeming
with soccer enthusiasts as officers from the Police component of African
Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and their counterparts from the Somali
Police Force, competed in a football match against resident teams.
It was a tussle of a different kind for a Force that is synonymous with policing
Somalia alongside their counterparts in the Somali Police Force.
In a competitive atmosphere, the Dharkenley District Team entered the pitch
shortly before 5pm ready to challenge their opponents, which consisted of the
AMISOM Police Soccer Team, led by the Operations Commander Isidore
Kirukiye and Formed Police unit 3 rd Contingent Commander Bamuzibire
Samuel.
The adrenaline raising but entertaining match saw the youthful Dharkenley
Team outdo their opponents in ball possession, before a cheering crowd.
When the final whistle went off, AMISOM Police had lost 3-0 to Dharkenley.
After the match, the victor team was rewarded with footballs courtesy of their
opponents, the AMISOM Police. The footballs are meant to give the youth an
opportunity to engage themselves in more meaningful activities such as
sports. It is in line with AMISOMs policy of community engagement.
The handover ceremony of the footballs to the soccer teams was presided
over by Dhakenley District Commissioner Adam Mohamed Omar, who
thanked AMISOM Police for the kind gesture. He said, Dharkenley district
teams gathered together here with AMISOM Police and Somali Police playing
a football match shows a high level of community interaction, a role AMISOM
Police and Somali Police are doing well in order to engage the population and
create awareness.

District Commissioner Adam Mohamed Omar added, AMISOM Police has
been using football matches, as one way of engaging youths who are prone to
crime. This engagement will be spread to other districts of Benadir region and
