EUROPE OR GIBRALTAR

The last European territory awaiting decolonization is in the European Union and
is called Gibraltar. The term is so inconsistent with our time and with greater
democratic space in history, Europe has come to accept the thesis that this rea
lity is invisible and therefore manageable, instead of identifying the most radi
cal legal contradiction and impossibility deeper policy. Officially, for the Uni
ted Nations and the Special Committee on Decolonization, this territory is the s
ubject of decolonization. However, the process is blocked from birth fifty years
ago, and on terms that would allow its perpetuation as a de facto colonial terr
itory.
The rhetoric of diplomacy really summarized the conflict in two sentences in con
flict: territorial unit held by Spain as Gibraltar was Spanish territory taken b
y force, and defended the principle of self determination from London.
But words omitted the essential reality of the rock: Gibraltar consists of sever
al different territories and several human realities. An important part of Gibra
ltar is a territory consisting of a military base and depends solely on London.
Another, a small town whose inhabitants serve as an excuse to Britain to perpetu
ate its military installations.
However, there is another factor, omitted, demonstrating that the colonization p
rocess is still alive. All decolonization should take into account the affected
population. In this sense, the case of Gibraltar has been exemplary effective wi
th people of the Rock. They have argued that the colonialism is good, that impe
rialism can be good. However, is that this is the only people of Gibraltar?, Are
the colonized of Gibraltar? Colonization and desconolonizacin have been here two
equally exclusive processes, two processes based on the forget the victims.
Who does not know the true story of Gibraltar can not understand what maimed, un
fair and biased interests are discussed. Gibraltar, at the time of its armed occ
upation by Britain, in times of peace with Spain, was densely inhabited. The con
ditions imposed by the occupant made many families, some 1,300, according to Eng
lish sources, had to leave their houses and homes, their way of life. The city w
as almost empty as a ghost town, while the displaced and uprooted exiles had to
start from scratch at the foot of the Rock, in view of their former homes. The h
ouses and belongings of the deportees were rented, sold, and produced money for
the Crown. Thus, two human realities, both in Gibraltar a source, one for adopti
on, they were configured. The displaced population was located in the paradox, n
ear a privileged area, due to shipping the Strait, but futile for them. Gibralta
r was a military base, frequently used to harass Spain itself. Thus began a rela
tionship of subordination, economic infeasibility for a territory out of their n
atural outlet, outside investment flows which nurture and trust regions in peace
.
Algeciras and La Lnea is the recessionary effects of a colonial hinterland, you c
an not normally compete: they can not become a tax haven such as the Rock, can n
ot guarantee an opaque banking system outside the Community rules, attract money
irregular southern Europe; if we add the ages of contraband, we explain the und
erdevelopment of the region. Indeed, the development of the Campo de Gibraltar h
as been impossible because it is contrary to the interests of the colonizing pow
er: Gibraltar is proposed as a hostile deployment, based on violence and stress,
and has frustrated the natural growth pole of the whole region. No single eleme
nt of resolutions 1514 and 1541 set not to allow the populations of the Bay of A
lgeciras as affected to a colonial situation.
So no question of excluding self-determination principle and include other Gibra
ltarians living in the Bay of Algeciras. Its legitimacy is historic, and their e
xclusion from the process of decolonization, an act of residual colonialism.

Imperialism is a mechanism of forgetting the other. These people were not even a
cknowledged the illegitimacy of his expulsion, its repression and its postponeme
nt to colonial interests. The core justification of human rights is not only com
pliance, but in repair.
Gibraltar is the last great colony, and the last desperate strategic model of an
imaginary empire. His proposal for the future is easily summarized: the unstabl
e equilibrium of the Strait, managed by the eventual use of the English force. T
he exact price is your alternative: the stability of the region, international l
aw and the future of its people. Request the European Parliament made a statemen
t condemning the exclusion in the process of decolonization of Gibraltar from th
e town of San Roque and the locations of the Bay of Algeciras is a need for just
ice and the proper historical sense of the European Union. Not fit in that space
colonies.
