A lot contains 15 castings from a local supplier and 25 castings from a supplier in the
next state. Two castings are selected randomly, without replacement, from the lot of 40.
Let A be the event that the first casting selected is from the local supplier, and let B
denote the event that the second casting selected is from the local supplier.
Determine: (i) P (A), (ii) P (B/A), (iii) P (AB) and (iv) P (AB).
An assembly consists of three mechanical components. Suppose that the probabilities that
the first, second, and third components meet specifications are 0.95, 0.98 and 0.99.
Assume that the components are independent. Determine the probability mass function
of the number of components in the assembly that meet specifications.

The supervisor of group of 20 construction workers wants to get the opinion of 2 of them
(to be selected at random) about certain new safety regulations. If 12 workers favour the
new regulations and other 8 are against them, what is the probability that
i.
both of the workers chosen by the supervisor will be against the new regulations
and
ii. one of them selected at random will be against the safety regulations..
Explain why there must be a mistake in each of the following statements:
i. The probability that a mineral sample will contain silver is 0.8 and the Probability
that it will not contain silver is 0.52.
ii. The probability that a drilling operation will be a success is 0.34 and that it will not
be success is 0.66.
iii. An air conditioning repair person claims that the probability is 0.82 that the
compressor is all right, 0.64 that the fan motor is all right and 0.41 that they are both
all right.
iv. The probability that a student will get an A in a geology course is 0.3, and probability
that he or she will get either an A or B is 0.27.
v. A company is working on the construction of two shopping centers, the probability
that the larger one will be completed on time is 0.35 and probability that both will be
completed on time is 0.42.

During one stage in the manufacture of IC chips, a coating must be applied. If 70% of
chips receive a thick enough coating, find the probabilities that, among 15 chips,
i.
at least 1 will have thick enough coatings,
ii.
at most 1 will have thick enough coatings and
iii.
exactly 1 will have thick enough coatings.

5. The life of a semiconductor LASER at a constant power is normally distributed with a mean
of 7000 hours and a standard deviation of 600 hours.
a. What is the probability that a LASER fails before 5000 hours?
b. What is the life in hours that 95% of the LASERs exceed?
c. If three LASERs are used in a product and they are assumed to fail independently, what is
the probability that all three are still operating after 7000 hours?
