Materials needed: Jazz Combo music & instruments: When the Saints Go Marching In from
Jamey Aebersold fakebook (traditional Dixieland classics), tenor saxophone (for modeling),
source recording (Louie Armstrong), backtrack (Jamey Aebersold book)
Standards:
Strand 1 Concept 2: PO 404. identifying and playing individually and with others all note and rest values as
encountered in the repertoire.
Strand 1 Concept 3: PO 201: playing simple improvised melodies within an appropriate harmonic structure
for a minimum of 8 measures over an accompaniment within teacher specified guidelines.
Objective(s)/Assessment:
Students will discuss Dixieland form and distinguish between voices in the source
recording (trumpet
melody, clarinet response/answer, trombone bass line). Students will answer
questions based on the
recording to demonstrate understanding of basic instrument roles. Students will
practice playing different
roles melody/embellished melody (trumpet), response (clarinet), bass line (low
saxophones),
improvised solos on basic chord progression I-V-I I-IV-ii-V-I
Personal objective: I will use questioning that challenges the students to think about
and analyze the
recording, and I will give feedback that will improve students improvising skills.

Introduction: Good morning! Were going to play a new tune today. (pass out music) Lets
first do a warm up in the key of concert F.
Procedure:
Warm Up Key of F call and response teacher on tenor sax (key of G)
Students listen to sound model original source recording of When the Saints Go
Marching In with Louie Armstrong. Students listen for: who has melody
Questions:
1. What instruments do you hear in this recording? (clarinet, trumpet, trombone)
2. Which one of those has the melody? (trumpet)
3. How about the clarinet? Whats the clarinet doing? (listen again) - answer or
response
4. Any other instruments? (trombone) bass line, root of chord
Everyone read through melody When the Saints Go Marching In (slowly)
Everyone play melody with backtrack
Divide up parts: play 4 times
1. trumpet on melody variation/embellished
2. clarinet on response high register (above throat tones)
3. saxophones bass line (root of chord)

Offer people to try improvising (others stay on melody
