# A transmission shaft bedded on two rolling bearing (A) and (D), power of 20 Hp is

received by pulley (C) whose diameter = 650 mm, at a speed of 200 r.p.m. and
transferred to a straight toothed 20-deg. Pressure angle spur gear (B) a pitch diameter =
300 mm. The pulley weights 100 kg and the gear weights 50 kg. Both the gear and pulley
are held to the shaft by a profiled key. The shaft is machined from alloy steel,

## Determine the following:

1. The shaft diameter required for a factor of safety (kb = 1.5).
2. Select the suitable rolling bearing A & D.
3. Submit a complete design drawing of the shaft. Your drawing must include:
a. Bearing A & D and its fixation.
b. Gear B and its fixation to the shaft.
c. Pulley C and its fixation to the shaft.
4. Design of a flat belt pulley. T = 55 kg /cm. (leather belt)

Bearing Design:
Select the suitable rolling bearing A & D.
From Table at shaft diameter at bearing element at point A & D, take bearing type is
Single Raw Deep Grove Ball Bearing with Dimensions Series 03 and shaft diameter 40
mm.
Outside Dia. D = 90 mm, width = B = 23 mm, C 0 = 5020 Ib and C =
7040 Ib
At Fa = 0 then X = 1 and Y = 0

We can see that the bearing life at point A and D less than 20000 hr, the design can't be
safe design, and then we can change the bearing
speed or changed bearing type.

Belt Design:
The permissible tension for the (leather belt) T =
55 kg /cm.
Where: the tensions on the other side of the belt

The width of the belt required:
Take the belt width b
