Materials and preparation
Materials
Teacher made inventory sheet of trash
Clipboards with pens attached

Preparation
1. Make the inventory sheet
2. Get yarn to attach the pens to the clipboards for each kid
3. I will need to take a walk around the area myself so I can get an understanding of
what we will be finding

Learning environment and management issues
I will be taking half the class at a time on a neighborhood walk to inventory trash. We will
begin first at the brown carpet so I can explain the inventory sheet and what to look out for.
The other half of the class will be with Ms. MB in Rhythm and Music. If children are
misbehaving prior to, buddy teacher will be used as an immediate consequence.

Plan
1) The Hook (5 minutes)
Bring them to the brown carpet and explain how we will be going on a
neighborhood walk to inventory the litter we see
I will show them that they are getting a clipboard with paper and that they need to d
tally when they see an item of trash

2) The Body of the Lesson (30 minutes)

o Go outside and walk with occasional stops around paying close attention to the litter
on the ground (10min per group)
o What is new litter vs old?
o Have them try and make guesses on how long some things have been there
o Come back and discuss their findings as a whole class
o What was most seen?
o Was there anything surprising about the litter inventory?
o Turn and talk about ideas they have on suggestion hey could give the people
in the neighborhood, following it with why.
o Collect their sheets to refer to in another lesson.

Assessment of the goals/objectives listed above
Their inventory logs
Informal observation on how they observe the world around them
Discussion

Anticipating students responses and your possible responses
I am expecting that it will be hard for some of the children to control themselves. I
will have to make myself very clear about the expectations I have for them. Other
than this, they have gone on neighborhood walks so I dont expectto make a whole
lot of accomodations

Accommodations
The sheets will have both larger pictures and words to help students like Iz, Z, Is,
and A.
