PERFECTIVITY AND TELICITY IN SERBIAN IN COMPARAISON WITH THE
SITUATION IN FRENCH
Summary
In this paper we examine the relationship between the perfective (or imperfective) aspect and the
telicity (or atelicity) of the action denoted by predicate in Serbian and in French. In French these are two
independent categories, since the grammatical aspect is encoded by the inflection, whereas the (a)telicity
is expressed by the verbal base. In this work we show that in Serbian the telicity and the atelicity
constitute an aspectual category independent of the grammatical aspect. Moreover, we show the
applicability of the telicity / atelicity distinction to the description of the syntactic facts of Serbian and reexamine the existing definitions of the perfective and imperfectve aspect.
Key words: verbal aspect, perfectivity, imperfectivity, telicity, atelicity.
