Weekly Problems Instructions for Students 2014/15

You are required to do homework problems set on the content of the lecture courses you are taking. This
work is assessed and in some cases the marks count towards your overall mark for the relevant modules. The
schedule for the individual lecture course components within the modules is detailed overleaf. In addition,
lecturers may also supply pre-lecture tests or other assignments for private study. The weekly problems will
normally relate to the content of the recent lectures but may sometimes rely on material not explicitly covered
in lectures.
The problems will be made available week-by-week electronically in pdf via the Physics Weekly Problems
system at https://teaching.physics.dur.ac.uk/ this system can also be reached via the Assignments
section of the individual courses in duo. It is your own responsibility to download the questions they will not
routinely be issued on paper and you should not assume that individual lecturers will remind you during their
lectures. Each problem will normally be made available one week before the submission deadline. The
solutions are due by 2.00 p.m. on the following Monday. No marks are awarded for late work. If there is a
good reason, such as illness, why you will not be able to submit in a particular week then you must arrange for
a self-certification form to be forwarded to the Department by your College.
For the module PHYS1122 Foundations of Physics 1 there are three types of problem (paper-based
problems, MasteringPhysics problems and tutorial problems), as shown on the schedule overleaf. For the
modules PHYS1081 Introduction to Astronomy and PHYS1101 Discovery Skills in Physics all the problems
are of the paper-based type. The weekly problems for these three modules are purely formative (i.e., the
marks obtained do not contribute to your module mark) but all this work is nevertheless compulsory. For
PHYS1141 Maths Toolkit for Scientists all the problems make use of an electronic system called MyMathLab
(you will be told more about this in the introductory lecture for this module) and the marks obtained do
contribute to your module mark.
For all paper-based problems, you should post your solutions at the yellow Level 1 Problems Station near
room 54 on the ground floor of the Physics Department. It is very important that you start each answer on a
separate sheet and mark each answer clearly with your full name and the question code (e.g. Mech1.1),
and your tutor group (e.g. 1-16) if you are taking Foundations. Please use A4 paper and staple together
the sheets for a given question (do not simply fold the corners of the sheets or use paper clips since this can
cause scripts to get mixed up). Post each question separately in the locked post box of the yellow problems
station, as follows:
For PHYS1122 Foundations of Physics 1 please post your answers in the slot corresponding to your tutor
group. Your scripts will be marked by your tutor, following marking schemes decided by the lecturers.
Your tutor will return the marked scripts either in the next tutorial or via the trays (sorted alphabetically by
surname) at the Problems Station near Room 54 by 2.00 p.m. on the following Monday.
For PHYS1081 Introduction to Astronomy and PHYS1101 Discovery Skills in Physics please post your
answers in the slot corresponding to your surname. Your scripts will be marked by a team of
postgraduate markers, following marking schemes decided by the lecturers. Marked scripts will be
returned via the trays (sorted alphabetically by surname) at the Problems Station near Room 54 by
2.00 p.m. on the following Monday.
Shortly after each submission deadline, the model solutions will be made available online, via the Physics
Weekly Problems system, and you should consult these to resolve points of misunderstanding. You should
keep your marked work, in case of queries later: if you throw it away, or lose it, then the Department will not
be able to take responsibility if there is a query.
For all MasteringPhysics problems, you should submit your answers online at
http://www.masteringphysics.com/. You will receive details of how to register for the MasteringPhysics
system when you purchase your Level 1 text book. The strict deadline for submitting your answers is
2.00 p.m. on Mondays. Regrettably, answers submitted after this time, or submitted on paper or by email, will
not be marked.
For all tutorial problems, you should not hand in your answers at the Problems Station but instead take them
to your tutorial which falls in the same calendar week as the deadline indicated.

For all paper-based problems please use the labels above (e.g. Mech.1 for the first
Mechanics problem), so that problems and solutions can be clearly identified.

In general each MasteringPhysics assignment may consist of several questions grouped

together. This should be clear when you log in to the MasteringPhysics site.

You should take your solutions to the tutorial problems to your tutorial which falls in the same
calendar week as the 'deadline' indicated. For example, if your tutorial group meets on
Thursdays then you should take your answers to Mech.T1 to your tutorial on 16 October, but if
your group meets on Mondays then you should take your answers to Mech.T1 to your tutorial
on 13 October.

The Department reserves the right to make changes to the above schedule at short notice, as
circumstances dictate.
In addition to the above schedule, some lecturers may set short web-based pre-lecture tests
or other assignments for private study. Completion of these is not compulsory but is strongly
recommended.
