HOW TO SAVE ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT?

Energy consumption is maximum in illumination and air conditioning the area. As per my lighting career experience, I have noticed that many
a places energy consumption can be reduced remarkably by just adopting few tips which will support to the consumer by reducing electricity
bill, and to the nation as well as environment to the great extent to preserve the same for future. Energy consumption can be reduced from
designing and construction level to the usages at day to day basis by taking few preventive steps briefly described here for easy layman
understanding.

1. USE PROPER WINDOWS OR GLASS FOR CLEAR ELEVATION AND NATURAL LIGHT ENTRY & AVOID ARTIFICIAL
LIGHTING DURING DAY TIME.

In many cases we found that artificial light are forcefully require to get sufficient light level in the room due to improper elevation or obstacles to get
natural light during the day time. It can be reduced with proper elevation during construction or interior design stage which can permit the natural light to
illuminate the room with sun shine. Natural light is healthy and advisable to avoid unwanted lights during day time. Increase the OTS (Open to Sky) cut
out or transparent roof in large hall or ceiling can avoid unwanted artificial light drastically during day time. Skylight or Daylight concept floating in
some of the European countries will give you ideas that how you can optimize the use of natural day light by placing proper glass elevation, windows,
artificial polished reflector or light shelf just to reflect the light inside the darker area of the room. Clear Fiber Optics transparent bricks instead of solid
non transparent brick can also bring the natural light in side the room. Natural light duct or tube can be placed in roof of the floor to divert or transmit
the natural light inside the darker area.

2. USE LIGHT FLUORESCENT COLOUR IN ROOM RATHER THAN DARK COLOUR TO GET MAXIMUM REFLECTIVITY.

After proper elevation it’s important for designer or architect to select proper colour combinations, which reflects the light rather than consume the light.
Fluorescent and light colours are advisable as light reflect and distribute evenly based on colour shades.

3. PROPER FURNITURE LAYOUT AND COLOUR.

Furniture layout and its colour are also equally important to save artificial lighting. Many a cases we found that its layout, colours and arrangement force
more artificial lights. Computer table and study rooms according to window and natural light elevation reduce artificial light requirement during day
time.

4. AVOID LIGHTING POLUTION BY USING CORRECT TYPE OF LAMPS, WATTAGE, SHAPE AS WELL AS COMPONENTS
INSIDE THE LUMINARIES TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF LUMINARIES.

Luminary or artificial light source better performance depends on right selection of lamp types, shape of the luminaries & lamp, reflector, diffuser,
ballast, starter etc. If you use proper combination of the latest available lamps and luminaries you can reduce the number of luminaries and its wattage
of power consumption. Lighting experts only can suggest you suitable combinations from latest technology and type of lamps to be used based on its
area and applications. LED, T5 fluorescent & Energy Efficient CFL lamps can save reasonable amount of energy against usage of conventional type T8
fluorescent lamp or HID lamps (High Intensity Discharge lamps i.e. Metal Halide (MH), High Pressure Sodium Vapor (HPSV) and Mercury Vapor
(MV) lamps which usually consume more power and generate heat which ultimately increase tonnage capacity and operational cost of the AC. High
wattage lamps consume, more amounts of hazardous gases like Mercury and Sodium which is dangerous for the environment also.

Advance lighting software assist the lighting designer to control the glare, distribution, placement and number of luminaries require based on area and
applications.

5. RIGHT STANDARD LUMINARIES AT RIGHT PLACES.

Different international standards (CE, BS, IEC, AS/ NZ, UL etc.) control luminary’s quality and performance based on its area of applications. IP
protection, Impact Resistance, UV Stabilization and Earth Protection are equally important in selecting luminaries based on its application. Different
range and shape of luminaries i.e. Rectangle, Round, Square, In ground, Under Water, Clean room, hazardous area lighting, indoor and outdoor types of
luminaries are equally important and assist the lighting expert to select the best alternative.

Standard define require light level known as (lux) depend on area of application. Study room or office work station you need minimum 300 lux and a
street lighting could be better at 10 to 20 lux only.

6. LUMINARIES PLACEMENT AT RIGHT PLACE & MOUNTING HEIGHT.

Right position and mounting height equally important to get highest performance and save energy. Recess, Surface, Ceiling, Pendent, Cove/Hidden,
Direct/ Indirect, Under water etc different installation positions are important to get the best light distribution with minimum number of luminaries and
its wattage.

Most important is mounting height of the luminaries. If you need light on floor or on table surface than proper mounting height of the luminaries is
equally important to reduce the wattage of the lamps. If your luminaries mounted too high than you will need higher wattage lamps and you will waste
more energy. Hence, in selection of luminaries its mounting height and work plane(where you require light) is very important and has to be decided in
beginning to avoid lighting pollution.

7. AVOID HID LAMPS USAGE & REDUCE HIGH HEAT GENERATION TO MINIMIZE TONNAGE & AC (COOLING) COST.

Higher the heat higher the cooling cost. HID lamps generate more heat and its force us to install higher capacity (tonnage) AC and its high power
consumption. Hence right selection of luminaries and lamps sources contributes to the great extent to reduce the cooling cost.

8. PROPER DIRECT & INDIRECT LIGHTING OPTIONS.

Architects and Interior designers usually under estimate the lighting designers different aspects based on lamps and luminaries features. Here there is a
role of lighting expert’s conflict with the interest of architects/interior designers to install the lighting source at direct/indirect or you can say visible or
non visible places. When you use more indirect light option than you will get less light out put and need more number or wattage of lights to illuminate
the area.

9. ALWAYS USE GOOD QUALITY & ORIGINAL BRANDED LAMPS & BALLAST.

Many a times we found that non standard brands printed watts / voltage are not matching with their products or falsely they print less watts on their
product which is actually of high watts lamps, just to show more light out put and confuse the customer. You will find these kinds of products on retail
market where product sold in high quantity at lower prices. Duplicate & counterfeit brands are of low performance and stating false wattage on product
than actual. Chip quality lamps and ballast gets heated, diffused faster and some time caused fire also.

Standard brands Philips, Osram, GE, Sylvania, Crompton original lamps give better performance and same is the case for standard brand Atcotridonic,
Vossloh Schwabe, Osram, and Philips branded original ballast give better performance.

10. ELECTRONIC BALLAST (CONTROLLER) WITH INSTANT START & MINIMUM POWER LOSS FEATURES.
In early days only magnetic ballast were used to run the lamps which take more starting time, consume more power and generate heat which affect the
lamp life. Latest technology electronic ballast consume less power as well as power loss is also low and comes with instant start and dimmable features,
which save energy.

11. HIGH REFLECTIVITY POLISHED ALUMINIUM RFLECTORS.

Latest technology high polished reflector inside the luminaries reflects and distributes the light equally and give @99% lumen output of the lamps.
Conventional pre painted or matt finish reflector gives only up to 75 to 80% light out put and hence you need higher wattage of lamps to get better
performance. Hence right reflector, reduce wattage consumption and save energy. In lighting industry it’s known as CAT-II or double parabolic reflector
which is advisable.

12. USE TRANSPERENT OR DIAMOND DIFFUSER IN LUMINARIES.

UV stabilized clear diamond finish diffuser over the luminaries give more light out put keep the light distribution better for long term. If you use non UV
stabilized diffuser than its get yellowish over a period of time and light output reduce drastically and its increase wastage of energy.

13. REPLACE THE LAMPS & TUBES AFTER CERTAIN BURNING HOUR OF LIFE, AS ITS LUMEN OUTPUT REDUCE
DRASTICALLY.

You will notice easily performance comparison between old and new lamps. The new lamps give full light out put and loose the light output due to
loosing property of inner mechanism and gases after several hours of burning life. You can find the life of each lamp from its original manufacturer.
One has to replace the lamps after expiry of burning hour life of the lamps even though lamps or tubes are working as you will not get enough light out
put and may force you to run more lights in the room for comforts.

14. USE PROPER LIGHTING CONTROLS & SAVE ENERGY.

Human kind is most selfish and lazy. One doesn’t care to reduce the energy cost unless its affect to him/herself or due to laziness they avoid undue
lighting consumption and save energy. This can be controlled very well with latest technology motion sensors, presence detector, remote controls, timer
switches, light sensors, occupancy sensors, noise detectors etc. Even simple two / three way wiring switches can also assist to switch off and save
energy. When you need light you will get it or it will be controlled by proper devices and save energy effectively. Time switch at work station to switch
off the computer, light, fan, heater & cooler or Presence detector at pantry / kitchen to switch off exhaust fan, chimney light, oven, toaster, and other
unwanted electric gadgets or presence detector in bathroom and toilet areas to switch off the light, fan, exhaust fan and room freshener can save the
energy remarkably.

15. USE VOLTAGE STABILIZER WHERE THERE IS FREQUENT VOLTAGE FLUCTUATION.

Some of the areas or countries one may be facing voltage fluctuation which affect smooth operation of lamps and affect power consumption. It can be
controlled by using high quality voltage stabilizer and increase life of accessories and keep maintain energy cost.

16. USE DIMMER, TIMER & WATT REDUCER DURING NIGHT SPECIALLY IN STREET & FAÇADE LIGHTING:
External lighting usually require early night hours more, when traffic and public movement higher and require standard light level for street lighting or
high light for attraction in façade lighting. You can say after sun set to 12 am one can keep high usage or full out put of luminaries and later 12 am to sun
rise there are very few movement and one can reduce light output by using dimmer or step down in wattages or minimize some of the luminaries by time
switches and reduce energy consumption.

17. REDUCE AIR CONDITIONING AREA AND ENERGY COST.

Air Conditioner consume highest amount of energy, and with various lighting controls one can reduce the heat generation sources to reduce the load on
AC. However, by minimizing cooling area with adding proper thermal insulation in ceiling, wall, raised flooring one can reduce the installation of higher
tonnage of AC and its operation cost.

18. PREFER ALTERNATE ENERGY SOURCES AS OPTION (SOLAR / WIND / BIOGAS / BIO FUEL / ENERGY FROM WAST
RECYCLING) WHEREVER SUITABLE.

With increasing cost of energy every body is looking at the options to normal energy which consume large amount of resources and become major
burden to economy and environment. Green building concepts are also developed to reduce normal energy and use alternate energy sources.

Solar is the largest alternate and in one research scientists claims that in just 40 minutes a day sun rays can generate energy equal to the entire world full
year require energy. One can optimize the usage of energy developed through Solar / Wind / Bio Gas / Bio Fuel / Ocean waves & tides and garbage
recycling & waste management. If not fully than partially for individual building, apartment or villa self consumption through alternate energy sources
and save his own money, national and environmental resources. Various alternate energy gadgets like, Solar Water heater or room heater, solar street
lights, solar traffic or warning sign coupled with LED lights or Glass Panel with photovoltaic film to generate power by replacing standard ACP sheets in
wall cladding could be great alternate energy solutions.

19. REDUCE WORKING HOUR & OVER TIME OR OTHER GENERAL ALTERNATE SAVES LOT OF ENERGY.

Copmmercial premises are wasting more energy than residential segment. Many a times people doesn’t work efficiently during the office hours and they
extend working days or over time without any urgency and few working staff increase the energy consumption as for one or two persons, general
occupancy areas are usually need to be illuminated and one can reduce the same by proper time management and workmanship improvement during
normal working hours. Five days a week or 8 Hrs daily operational time is sufficient to finish routine business work.

Various luxury products i.e. heater, usage can be controlled by using warm clothes or extra blanket during winter and light cloths & natural
air ventilation during summer time and can avoid cooler or AC consumption.

20. LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST, PROPERLY DISPOSED OFF FUSED (DAMAGED) LAMPS & TUBES TO PROTECT
ENVIRONMENT.

Do not throw used lamps / tubes in garbage as mercury and sodium content inside them affect the environment and can killed many animals and human
beings. Mercury and sodium gases has to be disposed off properly at right places, and hence many European environment friendly countries have
already started taking deposit to recollect the used or diffused lamps & tubes from the customers to protect the environment.
