New concept since 3.6 built-in eval licenses for all features, which when turned on, (sh

licenses all), will run for 60 days.

Will prompt for EULA to be accepted
The eval period can be paused

In essence, CLI is used to turn on any

eval license, and
there are nag syslog messages when
approaching 60 days if the customer did
not install a license. However the
feature will continue to run.

Evaluation licenses are metered licenses, which are valid only for a limited period. This

period is the usage period (of 60 days length) of a license and it is not based on the real
time or system clock, i.e. the clock ticks when said feature is configured on the router.
These evaluation licenses are built into the image, so they are not node locked but also

cannot be removed.
Evaluation licenses will be valid for 60 days of license usage (router is running for 60 days

with the license checked out, although it can be paused if (say) you want to only test for a
few days per month until the 60 days-worth is up). Close to the time when an evaluation
license expires, there will be syslog messages on console and also the feature will be
automatically converted to RTU license, and it will continue functioning.
What is an RTU? Functionally the same thing as a permanent license (no difference),

except that the honor-based paper license terms (EULA) are different for an RTU.

Technology pack 60-day Evaluation License support

Technology package licenses (Advanced IP Services and Advanced

Enterprise Services) can be activated via a 60-day Evaluation License. This is
an image-based license and users can test each license image level using this
Evaluation License. The end users have to accept and End User License
Agreement (EULA) if they want to use this license.
On the subsequent router reload it will boot at the configured level and the
remainder of 60 days evaluation period will start ticking until user explicitly
turns it off and brings it to base level. Once the 60 days usage evaluation time
is over, this technology pack evaluation license will automatically convert to an
RTU .
What is an RTU? Functionally the same thing as a permanent license (no
difference), except that the paper license terms (EULA) are different for an
RTU. Customer services cant move an RTU from one box to another, but they
can move a permanent license.

Performance (Throughput) Upgrade Evaluation License

Customers need to run an activation command to enable the

performance upgrade Evaluation License and accept the EULA.
platform hardware throughput level ?
5000000 throughput in kbps
10000000 throughput in kbps
20000000 throughput in kbps
40000000 throughput in kbps

After the router is rebooted, the performance will be at the selected

level. After 60 days of usage, the license will be automatically
converted to an RTU License.

2010 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

Cisco Confidential

15

The term RTU (Right-to-Use) license refers to a license that will be

shipped (built-in) with the SW image. The image-based

(Technology Package) Evaluation Licenses, Performance Upgrade
Evaluation Licenses, SW Redundancy, IPSEC, FW NAT and LI will
automatically convert to an RTU license after the 60-day usage
period expires.

Syslog messages / SNMP traps are generated on the 50th, 55th and

60th day to warn user of the end of the evaluation period and
conversion to an RTU license.
Once the license turns to RTU, the show license output will

indicate this conversion.

License will now be permanent (in effect).

2010 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

Cisco Confidential

16

All built-in, enforced and unenforced licenses will still have a

corresponding Permanent version.

A Permanent license can be obtained by the customer (as

described by the process discussed in the beginning) and installed

on-site.
They can also be installed by manufacturing based on the

customers order.
They can be installed in the field prior to or following the expiration

of an Evaluation License.

2010 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.

Cisco Confidential

17

A Permanent License has the following characteristics:

Does not expire.

Functionally equivalent to the Evaluation or RTU version.
Takes precedence over the Evaluation or RTU version of the same
license, i.e. it will take over the duties of any currently installed Eval.
License.
Can be cleared (deleted) from the system if Not In-Use state
whereas a built-in license cannot.
Can be re-hosted to another router (by contacting customer services)

ASR1002-X supports IOS software redundancy the Single RP may be configured with

dual IOS.
Two IOS process in a single RP function similar to different processes on separate RP.
Support all NSF/SSO features supported by dual-RP systems.
In order to achieve this, 8GB of memory is required in the ASR1002-X.
Software redundancy helps when there is a RP-IOS failure/crash; the active process will

switchover to the standby, while forwarding continues with zero packet loss.
Other software crashes (example: SIP or ESP) cannot benefit from Software redundancy.
The software upgrade procedure for ASR1002-X allows customers to upgrade the RP-IOS

package only as the first step of the software upgrade procedure and defer all the other
steps to a later time example: Maintenance window.
This allows customers to take advantage of any bug fixes of RP-IOS (or in the case of a

PSIRT) available in the next rebuild while maintaining the router in service.
