Fourth Sunday of Lent

John 3:14-21
"Whoever lives the truth comes to
the light." Think about the sun for a
moment. The light from this
gigantic celestial orb provides so
many things for us. Most obviously,
it provides brightness by which we
see, by which we work, play, and
navigate the world around us. It also
provides the warmth necessary for
our comfort and our survival. The
sun sustains plant life, which in turn
sustains our lives as well. It helps us
mark the passing of time, the
change of seasons, and the rhythm
of every day. The sun is a
tremendous gift from God, and our
lives--just like our planet--quite
literally revolve around it.

When Jesus uses the image of light

in today's Gospel, it may help us to
understand him if we think of the
sun. Just as this magnificent star
nourishes our physical existence, so
too Jesus nourishes our spiritual
existence. He gives us the
"brightness" to see the right choices
in front of us through his teaching
and his example. He warms our
hearts through his mercy and
forgiveness, changing our
coldhearted sinfulness into burning
charity. He sustains our spiritual
lives by offering us the gift of
salvation. And he helps us mark the
passing of time as we grow ever
closer to him, entering more and
more deeply into the knowledge and
love of our Lord.

Dear Santa Sophia Parishioners:

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

As you know, in mid-November 2014, I granted the

request of your pastor Father Jacob Bertrand for a
temporary leave of absence from active priestly
ministry in order to address issues of personal
growth and development.
Recently Father Jacob has informed me that he has
concluded it would be best for him not to continue
as pastor of Santa Sophia Parish, but rather to ask
for a new assignment when he returns to San Diego
which will also allow him to continue working on
personal issues of human growth and development.
I have granted Father Jacobs request, with gratitude for his ministry as Pastor of Santa Sophia Parish since July 1, 2013.
I am happy to let you know that Father Devdas
Masillamony will be your new pastor effective Easter Monday, April 6, 2015. I am grateful for the ministry of Father Timothy Deutsch as administrator
of the parish. Father Timothy will go to Queen of
Angels Parish in Alpine, effective the same date. Be
assured of my continuing prayers for your faith
community during this Lenten season.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Very Reverend Monsignor Steven F. Callahan
Diocesan Administrator

Farewell Father Jacob from the Pastoral Council

The Pastoral Council wishes to express our sincere
thanks to you for your service as our Pastor for the
past 18 months. Your spiritual guidance, collaboration with the lay leadership, and willingness to be
among the people was truly a blessing for our community. You guided us through the recovery from
the fire with a humble spirit of forgiveness that
brought us together as one body of believers even
more committed to our Parish.
Your love and reverence for The Holy Eucharist
brought many people to The Lord's table and your
zealous desire to bring souls to healing through the
sacrament of confession by making yourself more
accessible to the people, is a witness to
your dedication to His merciful love. Your passion
for the children and the young adults energized us
all and gave renewed hope to our families, and you
did all of this while nourishing us weekly with wise
and spirit-filled homilies that challenged us to deepen our relationship with Jesus.
As a Pastor you made a real difference in our community and we will be forever grateful! As you move
on to a new parish, please know that the people of
Santa Sophia will continue to hold you in prayer and
wish you much success in your new assignment.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and; fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,
