Prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis in the Province of Albay, Philippines
INTRODUCTION
The conduct of this particular study in the province of Albay about the pinworm, the parasitic
helminths that causes Enterobiasis. Pinworm is the most common worm infection in the United
States. Children under 18, people who take care of infected children and people who are
institutionalized are the people most likely to be infected. The prevalence can reach to 50%. The
investigation done aims to accomplish the following objective of this study is to :
a. Determine the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis to the children living in the
Province of Albay;
b. Compare the occurrence of Enterobiasis in the three (3) districts of the Province of Albay;
and
c. Correlate the presence of pinworm to the sociodemographic characteristics, and hygienic
practices of the respondents.
METHODOLOGY
The researcher uses three different techniques in gathering essential data such as the survey
method, the cellulose tape method and microscopy. The survey included questions pertaining to
the socio-economic profile and hygienic practices of the 2202 respondent ages 3-10 from 3
districts and 16 municipalities of Albay province. The researcher employed peri-anal swabbing
method and microscopy to collect the data needed and to detect infected children of the said
parasite.
Chi-square analysis revealed that the area where the children resides in terms of district, the age,
the educational status of the father and the number of children in the family were found
significantly related to the pinworm infection. Other socio-demographic factors and hygienic
practices of the respondents were not significantly related with the infection of pinworm based
from statistical analysis. Other endo and ectoparasites were observed in the collected samples.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The following recommendation was given: regular deworming intervention and assessing
pinworm and other intestinal parasites to children;Conduct a parasitological study that will
determine or assess the prevalence of other intestinal parasites and ectoparasites; More attention
must be given in the eradication of the parasite infestation, through:Information
disseminationand conducting trainings and seminars.
This paper/ research will give us an insight for assessing public health issues especially parasite
infection in rural areas, how the government addressed problems and the annual or regular
assessment of parasitic infection and eradication of the parasites infestations in children. The
methodology employed has provided accurate details on the correlation of the significant relation
on the different factors affecting the infestation. Although some recommendations like the study
of other ecto and endo parasites detected has left evaluators in question as to the origin or the
source of ectoparasites it will open up possibilities for further research and studies. The scope of
this study is a good collaboration of different researcher from different districts.

POSTER PAPER #6
1. The benefits of fish to man was given emphasis on the introduction if the main staple fish
found in Laguna bay will be susceptible to infestation then it may affect the food
production and also human health. The condition of Laguna Lake and its fauna was the
main concern of the study. The Title , objectives and methodology employed in this
research are accurately studied, the used of laboratory technique in determining and
detecting parasites was accomplish. The consultation with FHMQAS made the research
more reliable and valid.
2. Based from the results, several parasites was detected which are considered as major
pathogens that can cause intestinal disturbance and it was achieved in this study.
3. The conclusion was successful since they were able to detect several parasites that are
essential in determining its impact to health of the consumer since the two types of fishes
studied was considered as part of their daily diet.
4. The different parasites were alarmingly high in tilapia and low in milkfish, I would like to
know the resistance of milkfish to some parasites and the sources of this parasites
whether due to water condition or pollutants. The effect of the parasites if consume by
humans. How many percent should be consumed for it to have an ill effect on the
consumer. Also if there are ways employed for the control of this parasites.
