IN AN IDEAL WORLD

He walks towards my direction, eyes locked to mine. Im noticing

every little details about him; how the corners of his eyes crinkle
when he smiles, his goatee that grows beneath his face but never
reaching his chin and his eyes behind his glasses, turning the
symbol of nerdiness into a visual aphrodisiac, that seems to melt
and soften every time it meets mine- somehow full of love and
admiration, so intense that I want to look away . . . or never look
away, I cant decide.
He offered his hand. I took it, amazed with his sudden boldness.
Heads from every direction turned to us. Two boys holding hands.
People stare because we look good together, he said. I stare at his
face dumbfounded, my mouth agape. I realized there are kisses
and laughs and risks worth taking, he answered my obvious
inquisitive look. And love. I am here because of love.

I think that the worst thing that ever happened to humankind is labels.
Everyone somehow NEEDS to be something: white, black, skinny, fat, straight, gay,
queer. The world is so obsessed with defining sexuality for everyone and attaching
labels to it. Any time any person openly leaves the sexual norm, their sexuality
becomes, more often than not, the absolute defining characteristic of that person. It
becomes the first thing people think about and often the first thing they mention.
Every other part of that person all but disappears. The world is not divided into
sheep and goats. Not all things are black nor all things white. It is a fundamental of
taxonomy that nature rarely deals with discrete categories. Only the human mind
invents categories and tries to force facts into separated pigeon-holes. The living
world is a continuum in each and every one of its aspects. The sooner we learn this
concerning sexual orientation the sooner we shall reach a sound understanding of
the realities of sexuality. If we confront ignorance with knowledge, bigotry with
tolerance, and isolation with the outstretched hand of generosity. Racism,
homophobia and bigotry can, will, and must be defeated.
In an ideal world.
Instead of being presented with stereotypes by age, sex, color, class, or religion,
people would have the opportunity to learn that within each range, every person is
of the same species: human being.
In an ideal world.
As Martin Luther King Jr. said, Little black boys and girls will be holding hands with
little white boys and girls.
In an ideal world.

People would understand that sexuality is as wide as the sea. Understand that their
morality is not law. Understand that we are they.
In an ideal world.
People would understand that success has no color.
In an ideal world.
Other people would not keep secrets, tell lies, deny who they are, and try to be who
theyre not. And remember that they are special and worth being cared about,
loved, and accepted just as they are. And would never, ever let anyone convince
them otherwise.
In an ideal world.
No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior.
In an ideal world.
The good would always outnumber homophobia, racism, violence, bigotry,
intolerance, fear, misogyny, hatred and ignorance.
In an ideal world, I wouldnt be writing this because it shouldnt matter.
