Lesson Objectives
As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge of mini-beast body parts by drawing and recording them through the app show me.
Use craft material to make a mini-beast featuring the learnt body parts.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:

Introduction:
- Flash cards
Lesson steps:
Book: Made About Mini-beasts! By Giles Andreae
Craft materials provided:
- Egg cartons
- Empty toilet rolls
- Goggle eyes
- Tooth picks
- Honky nuts
- Pop sticks
- Pom poms
- Pipe cleaners

Provision for students at educational risk:

Extension:
Students who finish their mini-beast drawing early on
the I-pad are encouraged to label the body parts within
their picture. Students can also label the body parts of
their craft mini-beast.
Assisted:
Students who need assistance will be guided through
both the craft activity and show me app by
discussions on body parts through out. They will be
prompted to reflect on the introduction discussion,
which will help them complete the task.

LESSON EVALUATION (to be completed AFTER the lesson)

Assessment of Lesson Objective and Suggestions for Improvement:

Teacher self-reflection and self-evaluation:

Motivation and Introduction:

Resources/References

Students will make their way to the front of the class to sit on the mat in order to start
the lesson.
To motivate students show them flash cards of different mini-beasts getting them to
act like them. E.g. March like an ant, click like a beetle.

Flash cards.

Question class about what they know about mini beasts and the different parts of mini
beasts. Talk about the parts of insects:
All insects have three main body parts: a head, thorax, and abdomen. It's important
to know these parts in order. It helps to think of the thorax as being sandwiched in
between the head (which is at the top just like your own head) and the abdomen (at
the bottom).
Head: An insect has a small head that is a lot like your own head because it holds the
insect's brain, eyes, and mouth. Insects also have special feelers called antennae that
stick out of the top of their heads. They use their antennae to smell and feel because
they do not have noses and hands like we do.
Thorax: middle section called the thorax. The thorax of an insect is kind of like your
chest, except insects have six legs that come out of their thorax! Insect legs have
special joints (sort of like your knees) and tiny barbs on the ends instead of toes.
Many kinds of insects have one or two pairs of wings attached to their thorax.
Abdomen: The part below an insect's thorax is called the abdomen. It is the largest
part of the insect's body and contains its stomach, just like your abdomen does. It also
contains the insect's reproductive system. Insects can reproduce (have babies) very
quickly. Most insects reproduce by laying eggs, like chickens do, only insect eggs are
very tiny and have soft shells.
The teacher will tell the students the purpose of the lesson and what they should be
able to achieve by the end of this lesson.
Today we are going to break into two groups one group will be doing work on the Ipad and one group will be making craft insects.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

Craft Mini-beasts
Today we are going to be making our very own mini-beasts from the craft materials
provided. You can use any materials you wish to create your mini-beast. Remember
from our introduction discussion that insects have three main body parts a head,
thorax and abdomen.
-

This activity will involve the students making craft insects.

Craft materials will be provided and students are encouraged to be as
creative as they can with their craft insects.
Students are guided to remember the discussion at the beginning of the
lesson about insect body parts.
While they are making their craft insects it will be revisited that insects have
three main body parts: a head, thorax, and abdomen. The thorax is
sandwiched in between the head, which is at the top and the abdomen, which
is at the bottom.
The book Mad About Mini-beasts by Giles Andreae will be kept at the
table for students to flick through.

Craft materials provided:

- Egg cartons
- Empty toilet rolls
- Goggle eyes
- Tooth picks
- Honky nuts
- Pop sticks
- Pom poms
- Pipe cleaners
Book: Made About Minibeasts! By Giles

Questions:
- What insect have you decided to make?
- What are the main body parts of an insect?
- How many legs does your insect have?
- What materials are you going to use to make your insect?
- Can your insect fly?
- Tell me something interesting about your insect?

Drawing a bug on ShowMe

Today we are going to be drawing our own mini-beast using an app called Showme
on the iPads. First we are going to look back on what we have just learned: that all
mini-beats have a head, thorax and an abdomen. So these are the first three things I
want to see you drawing, once you start your mini-beast! Also this app is really cool,
if you press this record button it will record what you are drawing and it will also
record your voice! (give students a demonstration). So as you are drawing your minibeast I want you to say out loud what you are drawing, and after we are all done we
can show each other out finished products! Does anyone have any questions? Lets
give it a go!
-

This activity requires students to remember, recognise and draw the three
body parts of a mini-beast
IPads with Showme apps will be provided for each student
While students are drawing the educator will be present for any questions
that need to be asked/answered and for supervision while students are using
iPads.
Once students are done make sure they save their presentation
They can then show their presentation to a partner or the small group

Ipads for each student

Each iPad has the showme
app on it

Questions:
- What mini-beast have you decided to draw?
- What are the main body parts of a mini-beast?
- How many legs does your mini-beast have?
- Can your mini-beast fly?
- What do you know about your mini-beast?

Lesson Closure:
To conclude the lesson, a discussion on the main objectives (body parts of insects)
and activities that were covered on mini-beasts will be had.
The group discussion on the three main body parts of a mini-beast talked about
throughout the lesson will be re-discussed with opportunities for further questions to
be asked from students.
All insects have three main body parts: a head, thorax, and abdomen. It's important
to know these parts. It helps to think of the thorax as being sandwiched in between the
head (which is at the top just like your own head) and the abdomen (at the bottom).
Questions:
- Can I have two students who would like to show their recorded mini-beast
drawing to the group?
- Can anyone tell me something new they have learnt about mini-beasts that
they did not know before?
- Can I have two students to show their craft mini-beast and explain the
parts of their mini-beast?
- Can anyone tell me what the main body parts are of an insect?

Transition:
Students will be guided back to the mat to meet with the other half of class who have
been participating in other activities.
They will be instructed to wait patiently for their next instruction from their Year one
teacher.
Thank you year ones for all being so wonderful today, we hope you have learnt lots
of fun an exciting new facts about the different parts of a mini-beast. Please sit
silently and wait for instructions from your teacher.
Assessment:
A checklist and observational notes of the lesson objectives will be used to assess.
