FBI: Shore
brothel plan
snuffed out

THE PARKWAY
NEVER SLEEPS

NEWARK Two alleged members of the DeCavalcante crime family were looking for a remote location
in Toms River to run a high-end brothel, under the guise
of a private club hawking drinks for wounded warriors,
authorities said.
FBI agents, who said they foiled the plan on Thursday, also said they put the brakes on a murder-for-hire
plot in Elizabeth and struck a blow to the crime familys
New Jersey cocaine business. They arrested 10 alleged
members or associates of the crime family, including
three Toms River men and a Brick man, according to
U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman.
Anthony Stango, 33, of Brick and his father, Charles
Stango, 71, of Henderson, Nevada, were arrested and
charged with conspiring with the crime familys New
Jersey crew to run a prostitution business in Toms River and distribute cocaine, authorities said.
In addition, Charles Stango, described by authorities
as a capo or captain in the crime family, and Toms
River residents Frank Nigro, 72, and Paul Colella, 68,
were charged with plotting to kill a rival gang member
in Elizabeth, according to the news release.
The FBI agents also arrested Mario Galli, 23, of
Toms River and charged him with cocaine distribution,

State Department of Education Commissioner

BRICK A steady roar fills Evergreen Woods. The drone of not-sodistant cars and trucks bounces off the condominium facades.
Inside Michele Spectors home, the white noise of vehicles is ever
evident. Her kitchen window overlooks a steady stream of southbound Garden State Parkway traffic heading past Exit 91. Since Parkway construction started two years ago, noise and air pollution have
lowered the quality of life for her and neighbors living in Evergreen
Woods, said the 59-year-old.
The vibrations, you can feel it in bed on your second level. Everything shakes, Spector said outside her home. Its very loud. Its disruptive. You cant sleep through the night.
Spector and her neighbors pleaded their case before the New Jersey Turnpike Authority last month, the latest in a series of moves by

TRENTON There is one question concerning the

states Partnership of Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test that no one seems to
know the answer to: How much is the new program
costing school districts?
The statewide cost of a four-year contract for the
controversial PARCC testing could be as much as $108
million, but Gov. Chris Christies education czar told
lawmakers Thursday the additional town-by-town
costs are not known and wont become available.
Were not collecting that information, state Department of Education Commissioner David Hespe
said. Its almost impossible to do that.
Hespe, who appeared before the Senate Education
Committee, said school expenditures would be similar
with or without PARCC.
Districts are constantly updating their curriculum,
buying textbooks and materials, investing in technology, Hespe said. Being able to disaggregate that and
come up with a PARCC-only number I dont think is
even possible.
It would be really difficult for us to go and actually

The buffer between the Garden State Parkway and the Evergreen Woods development in Brick was removed as
the highways widening project continued. This view looks north along the Parkway from a pedestrian overpass
