Prerequisite: MGMT 101


Course Objective: Management Accounting is a sub-area of accounting concerned with information
needed to plan and control company operations effectively and make good business decisions. The
overall objective of this course is to provide students with the concepts and tools needed to
understand and effectively use managerial accounting information.
Learning Objective: Critical and Reflective Thinking Skills: Students learn to apply relevant
concepts to managerial situations
Major Course Topics: Job-Order Costing, Activity Based Costing, Process Costing, Cost Behavior,
Cost-Volume-Profit Relationships, Profit Planning, Standard Costs, Flexible Budgets,
Decentralization, and Relevant Costs for Decision Making.
Required Materials: Introduction to Managerial Accounting, 5e, by Brewer, Garrison, and Noreen,
McGraw-Hill Irwin, 2010
Course Format: Lecture and classroom discussion.

Class Participation/Preparation: Participation/Preparation will be based on the following:


a. Class Attendance
b. In-Class Problem Discussion
Quizzes: Weekly quizzes will be given on every Friday. Questions will be from the book (see course
schedule). Besides weekly quizzes, there will be pop quizzes from time to time.
Discussion Sessions (4th credit hour): Each student is required to register for discussion session
each week (50 minutes). Attendance is mandatory. The TA will collect homework problems, go
over the assigned problems and answer any questions from students. The TA will also administer
weekly quizzes. Students can make an appointment with the TA if they need additional help.
Exams: There will be three exams scheduled, as shown on the course schedule. Each exam will test
course material covered during the classes prior to the exam date. Students will have the entire
class period to work on the exam. Students are expected to take all exams at the regularly
announced time. No make-up exams.

Preparation:

Read each chapter in the textbook before it is covered in class. It is important for you
to be familiar with each topic before it is discussed in class.
Attend class and take notes on the discussion. Good notes are helpful.
Attempt in-class problems before they are covered in class. It is essential that you
attempt those problems on your own! Work the problems before we go over them in
class. Practice makes perfect!
