HOW TO UPGRADE ANDROID TV BOXES SUCH AS GENIATECH ENJOY ATV 1000

ANDROID TV BOX AND ITS RE-BADGED, NEONIQ, GTV 220 AND MYGICA ATV1000
For those who are interested in an upgrade path for their TV Box to Android Version 2.3.4
and then to Android 4.0.3 ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) and beyond, the following method
will allow you to do so.
NOTE: This How To was amended and updated as Megaupload was closed down by the
FBI and the necessary downloads could no longer be downloaded. I have now uploaded
them all to Dropbox. I have now uploaded them to mega.co.nz
Further it starts off from when these TV Boxes only came with Android Version 2.2.
If your version is a version higher than 2.2, you need to locate the point in the How To
that corresponds to where you TV Box is currently at in regards to Android version, Uboot
version, Recovery version and Build number and proceed from there.

YOU DISABLE YOUR TV BOX.
INTRODUCTION
This method is for the Geniatech Enjoy ATV 1000 Android TV Box and its re-badged,
NeoniQ, GTV 220 and MyGica ATV1000. I have successfully used the method on the last
two and it should also work with the other two. The 2000 models can also be upgraded

I have used the information from the various posts and accumulated them into this
method and, hopefully, resolved some of the confusion generated by the posts.
The method involves taking the box back to the starting point of Android version 2.2.5
Update 20110909. This can also be done if you had previously upgraded to Android
Version 2.3 using Update20111010_Kgdtea_beta1.
The first few steps require each of the updates to be renamed update.zip to install and
the final ones to be renamed update.img. Note one is .zip and the other is an .img
files. On the ICS version, there is an Upgrade app that allows you to upgrade without
having to go through the unplug/replug in method and accepts any file name provided it
has an .img or .zip suffix.
Further the first few can be updated using Settings -> Privacy -> Update system while
the last few require you:
a) to remove the SD card,
b) unplug power lead from the socket,
c) hold in the black button underneath,
d) plug in the power while holding in the button.
A blue light will appear first then a red light.
When the red light appears release the black button.
The unit will show the message Update failed.

Simply insert the SD card with the update.zip and select the 3.apply
sdcard:update.zip option in the Recovery system main menu: or if this option is not
available, the 1.reboot now option
Further, at one of the update stages, the unit will reboot to the Recovery mode
continuously. This is only temporary until the next update is applied.
The final version has Market, a special 10.2 version of FlashPlayer and plays YouTube
correctly as well as solving the component out problems. Further, Crackle movies play
very well but ABC IView still has problems
YOU SHOULD NOT UPDATE FLASHPLAYER if asked.
The downside of this sequence is that future updates must be via the .img route as the
.zip method is not supported except when you get to the ICS versions where both
img and zip can be used.
Now importantly, if you do not like the results of the method, then you can go back to
Android 2.2.
METHOD
STEP 1:
Taking the box back to the start point from either Android 2.2 or Android 2.3 if the
Update20111010_Kgdtea_beta1 method was used.
Update20110909.zip
This will take your Android 2.2 unit back to a base start point for Android 2.2. It will also
take Android 2.3 update (if you used update20111010_Kgdtea_beta1.zip) back to Android
2.2.
Download, do not unzip, copy it to blank SD card, rename to update.zip and use either
boot method to update your box.
When installed open Settings -> About device
You should have the following:
Android version
2.2.5
Build number
20110909
Dont worry about the others yet.

STEP 2:
This is a SPI update and will install Uboot version 1.3.5 and Recovery version 1.2.9.
These help to set up the TV box for updating to Android 2.3

Download the file and, this time only, unzip it. Open the unzipped folder and drill down
until you get to three .zip files; update_sp1_256.zip, update_spi_512.zip and
update_spi_512F.zip.
The numbers 256MB and 512MB refer to the internal memory size and 512F refers to the
Android 2.2 or above versions of the TV box with 512MB of internal memory.

The label on the back of the TV box will indicate which one to choose. Both mine were
512 MB and the Version numbers were GTV 220 (Android 2.2.0) and the MyGica serial
number was M3V224xxxxxxx showing they were both version 2.2. In my case the
512F.zip file was the correct one.
Do not unzip 512F.zip, copy it to a blank SD card, rename to update.zip and use
either boot method to update your box.
When installed open Settings -> About device
You should have the following:
Android version:
Uboot version
Recovery version
Kernel version
Build number

STEP 3
This is a SPI update and will install Uboot version 1.3.6 and Recovery version 1.3.0 so
that you can update to Android 2.3.4.
This update will cause you TV box to cycle continuously in the recovery mode. This will
be temporary until the next step is applied.
UpdateSPI20111028ALL2.3
Download but do not unzip, copy it to a blank SD card and rename to update.zip.
Do not inset SD card at this stage but use the power plug/reset button to reboot your
machine.
It will reboot and stop in the Recovery system mode with a message at the bottom saying
Update failed.
Insert your SD card and select 3.apply sdcard:update.zip and the TV box will reboot and
cycle to the recovery mode again.
Remove the SD card and proceed to Step 4

STEP 4
This is the actual Android 2.3.4 update and will update the TV box to 2.3.4 and loads a
special form of FlashPlayer 10.2 but it does not have Market.
From here on in, the updates must be the form UPDATE.IMG. Note the .IMG extension.
Update20111028

Download but do not unzip, copy it to a blank SD card, rename to update.img and
insert it in the TV box.
You should be in the System recovery mode with a message saying Update failed.
Select 1.reboot system now
The update then will proceed. Be patient because there are some blank screens that
appear from time to time.
When installed open Settings -> About device
You should have the following:
Android version:
Uboot version
Recovery version
Kernel version
Build number

You could stop at this stage but you will miss out on some functionality and goodies
provided by this and the next associated update.
This is a SPI update and currently the final update of the series and fixes a component
video problem.

Download but do not unzip, copy it to a blank SD card, rename to update.img and
insert it in the TV box.
Reboot your TV box using the power plug method. Your SD card could be inserted before
you reboot.
If not inserted, the TV box will go to the System recovery mode with a message saying
Upgrade failed.
Insert SD card and select 1.reboot system now
The update then will proceed. Be patient because there are some blank screens that
appear from time to time.
When installed open Settings -> About device
You should have the following:

This loads the special form of FlashPlayer 10.2 that fixes the YouTube problem and fixes
the component problem and has Market

Reboot your TV box using the power plug method. Your SD card could be inserted before
you reboot.
If not inserted, the TV box will go to the System recovery mode with a message saying
Upgrade failed.
Insert SD card and select 1.reboot system now
The update then will proceed. Be patient because there are some blank screens that
appear from time to time.
When installed open Settings -> About device

If you decide to go back to Android 2.2 or the Android 2.3 version using
update20111010_Kgdtea_beta1, then the following is for you.
This is a SPI update and takes you back to Android 2.2.

Download but do not unzip, copy it to a blank SD card, rename to update.img and
insert it in the TV box. Reboot your TV box using the power plug method. Your SD card
could be inserted before you reboot.
If not inserted, the TV box will go to the System recovery mode with a message saying
Upgrade failed.
Insert SD card and select 1.reboot system now
The update then will proceed. Be patient because there are some blank screens that
appear from time to time.

So now you should be back to Android 2.2
CONCLUSION
Having updated to Android you have Market access, can play YouTube and no longer
have component video problems and are on a pathway to future enhancements, but do
not forget DO NOT UPDATE FLASHPLAYER FROM THIS SPECIAL 10.2 VERSION
