Opening Speech of Symposium Chairman

Professor J Y Richard LIEW, NUS

13:40 14:05

DirectSecondOrderanalysisforstabilitydesignofsteelstructures
Professor SiuLai CHAN
A new and curved beamcolumn element with arbitrarilylocated plastic hinge for secondorder inelastic or
direct analysis of planar steel frames will be discussed. The proposed element explicitly models the member
initial imperfection allowing for member P effect directly. The work will enhance the practicality of the
secondorder plastic analysis to design largescale steel structures more economically and efficiently.

14:05 14:30

Designapplication&fabricationofS460mTMCPsteelplatesinsteelandcompositestructures
Mr. KojiOKI
TMCP steel plates are widely used in buildings such as welded BOX section, welded Hsection etc. This lecture
presents the benefits, and discuss the issues related to design and fabrication members made of S460M TMCP
steel plates. Design case studies are included on steel & composite members using S460M TMCP steel plates,
and welding practices of S460M TMCP steel plates.

14:30 14:55

Materialrequirementsforsteelandcompositestructures
ProfessorSingPingCHIEW
This lecture will focus on material selection and quality control for steel and composite steelconcrete structures
and highlight certain key aspects and material requirements in using the latest Structural Eurocodes. Emphasis
will be placed on using high strength materials to achieve economy, however, design limitations and
restrictions in using such materials for steel and composite structures will also be presented.

FabricationandconstructionoftheSingaporenationalstadiumroofstructure
Mr.Chelvadurai HARENDRAN
This lecture presents the fabrication and construction issues faced by the steel fabricator in the erection on very
large span roof structure and explain how these issues can be resolved. The design and fabrication of complex
three dimension tubular joints are presented. The lecture also highlights one of the main features of the
stadium roof structure which is the retractable roof system. The structural system to accommodate the
movement of the retractable roof will be explained.

16:10 16:35

ConnectiondesignofConcreteFilledTubular(CFT)structures
Mr. TakayukiNANBA
This lecture will show details and design methods of connections of concrete filled tubular (CFT) column to
beam in Japan. Steel tubes are used for CFT columns, therefore inner diaphragms, outer diaphragms, through
diaphragms or increased thickness reinforcement type are applied to the connections in most cases to achieve
rigid moment joints and to avoid local failure.

16:35 17:00

DesigncodesandpracticalapplicationsofConcreteFilledTubular(CFT)structuresinJapan
ProfessorAkihikoKawano
This presentation will introduce outlines of the Japanese design guides of CFT structures. Especially for the
design guide of AIJ, which was drafted and edited by the several authors including Prof. Kawano, this
presentation will focus on the scope of application and design of structural elements, axial member, column
under axial & bending load and beamcolumn connection.

17:00 17:25

Highstrengthcompositecolumnsforhighrisebuildings newdesignguideforSingapore
ProfessorJYRichardLIEW
Significant findings from tests on tubular columns infilled with ultrahigh strength concrete will be discussed.
High tensile steel with fy to 780MPa and ultrahigh strength concrete with fck up to 180MPa were used. More
than 2000 test data on CFT columns collected from literature were analysed to formulate the new design guide.
This lecture will explain the design principles of the guide book, which will be available for use in Singapore. The
design guide is an extension of EC4 method to the use of high strength steel and high strength concrete for
composite design.
