1. What is creative non-fiction

Creative nonfiction (also known as literary or narrative nonfiction) is a genre of writing that uses literary styles and
techniques to create factually accurate narratives. Creative nonfiction contrasts with other nonfiction, such
as technical writing or journalism, which is also rooted in accurate fact, but is not primarily written in service to its
craft.
2. Define the following:
A.) SHORT STORY
A short story is a work of fiction that is usually written in prose, often in narrative format. A short story usually deals
with a few characters and often concentrates on the creation of the mood rather than the plot.
I. Elements:
CHARACTER: A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action
of a short story or other literary work.
SETTING: The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens. Authors often use
descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of
setting
PLOT: A plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict.
CONFLICT: The conflict is a struggle between two people or things in a short story. The main
character is usually on one side of the central conflict.
On the other side, the main character may struggle against another important character, against the
forces of nature, against society, or even against something inside himself or herself (feelings, emotions,
illness).
THEME: The theme is the central idea or belief in a short story.

1. Elements of a Plot
1.

Opening Situation - The reader is often told where and when the story occurs; introduces the
character (s).

2.

Inciting Force - A conflict is usually established between characters.

3.

Rising Action - The conflict between characters develops and becomes more pronounced.

4.

Climax - The moment of greatest suspense.

5.

Falling Action - The action leads to the resolution or final outcome.

6.

Final Outcome - The writer wraps up and ties up any loose ends in hopes that the reader will leave
the story satisfied.

B. An autobiography (from the Greek, -autos self + -bios life + -graphein to write) is an account of
the life of a person, written by its subject.
c. A biography is a detailed description or account of someone's life. It entails more than basic facts (education,
work, relationships, and death), a biography also portrays a subject's experience of these events. Unlike a profile
or curriculum vitae (rsum), a biography presents a subject's life story, highlighting various aspects of his or her life,
including intimate details of experience, and may include an analysis of a subject's personality.
D. An anecdote is a short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person. It may be as brief as the
setting and provocation of a (witty remark )bon mot. An anecdote is always presented as based in a real
incident[1] involving actual persons, whether famous or not, usually in an identifiable place.
