"WHY THE GOSPEL IS GOOD NEWS"

GOD CALLS US THROUGH THE GOSPEL

Romans 1:1-15
I. Introduction
A. The book of ROMANS
1. Written by Paul from the area of CORINTH on Paul's THIRD
journey. He introduced PHOEBE to the Romans brethren
(Romans 16:1,2)
2. Paul was planning to take the CONTRIBUTION for poor
Christians in Jerusalem and Judea (15:25-27)
3. Then, he wanted to visit them in ROME (15:24,28,29)
See also 1:14,15.
B. In this study, we want to see clearly that GOD CALLS US TO
HIMSELF THROUGH HIS GOSPEL
1. He "calls" according to HIS purpose and choice (Romans 9:11)
2. All things work for good to those who are "called" according to
HIS purpose (8:28)
3. In our text, Romans 1:1-15:
a. We are "called" TO BELONG TO JESUS CHRIST (1:6)
b. We are "called" to be His "HOLY PEOPLE," His "SAINTS"
(Romans 1:7). In the Holy Scriptures, "SAINTS" are
"CHRISTIANS" (See also I Corinthians 1:2; Philippians
1:1; Acts 9:13).
c. The Lord "called" Paul to be an APOSTLE (Romans 1:1) so
that he might preach the "OBEDIENCE OF FAITH"
among ALL NATIONS (1:5; 16:26)
C. In this lesson, the STUDENT SHOULD LEARN THE FOLLOWING:
1. The meaning of the "CALL" of God, and HOW He CALLS us
2. It is only the LORD who has the RIGHT TO COMMAND US
3. The IDENTITY of the LORD JESUS CHRIST
4. The Lord CALLS US through the GOSPEL!
2

II. The MEANING of the word "CALL"

A. It is used of one being "SUMMONED" as of "one being INVITED to a
MEAL" (See Matthew 22:14)
B. It is also used of GOD "CALLING" SOMEONE to PERFORM A
SPECIFIC TASK OR WORK
1. Paul was "CALLED" to be an APOSTLE to GENTILES (Romans
1:1; 15:15,16). See Acts 26:16-18 at the conversion of Paul
2. We are "CALLED" to the GOSPEL by the GRACE OF CHRIST
(Galatians 1:6)
3. We are "CALLED" to be "free" in Christ, and to SERVE
(Galatians 5:13)
4. We are "CALLED" into FELLOWSHIP with the Lord Jesus Christ
(I Corinthians 1:9)
5. In our text, we are "CALLED" to be the POSSESSION of Christ,
and TO BE HOLY PEOPLE (Romans 1:6,7)
C. PLEASE NOTE: It is GOD WHO CALLS! It is GOD WHO ISSUES THE
INVITATION! (Romans 8:30; 11:29)
III. Throughout the HISTORY of the HUMAN RACE, God has CALLED UPON
MEN TO "SUBMIT" to Him, TO OBEY HIM!
A. In Romans, Paul stated that some of the JEWS had not submitted to
GOD'S WAY OF MAKING MEN RIGHT before Him
(Romans 10:1-3)
They were ignorant of God's Righteousness.
B. But, as CLAY IS MOLDED in the hands of the POTTER, man must
permit GOD TO "MOLD" THEM AS HE DESIRES (Romans 9:21).
C. God has the RIGHT TO COMMAND, and we have the PRIVILEGE TO
OBEY (Romans 6:12,16; 15:18)
D. EXAMPLES of God "CALLING" men to COVENANTS (Agreements)
1. He made a "COVENANT" with Noah and Noah OBEYED
(Genesis 9:1-17)
2. God made a "COVENANT" with Abraham, saying, "Walk before
Me and be blameless," and the LORD WOULD BLESS HIM
(Genesis 17:1-27)

3
3. To Abraham, whom God "CALLED," the Lord gave GREAT
PROMISES (Romans 4:13-22)

a. The promise of BECOMING A GREAT NATION--ISRAEL

(Genesis 12:1,2)
b. The promise of the LAND OF CANAAN (Genesis 12:7)
c. The promise of a DESCENDANT who would "BLESS ALL
NATIONS" (Genesis 12:3; Galatians 3:8-16). This is
JESUS CHRIST!
4. God "CALLED" the people of ISRAEL to Himself, and made a
"COVENANT" with them (Romans 9:1-5). This
"agreement" required "SUBMISSION!" (Exodus 34:27, 28;
Deuteronomy 28:1-14; 28:15-68)
5. PLEASE NOTE: GOD "CALLS" ALL MEN TODAY THROUGH
THE GOSPEL OF HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST!
1. The GOSPEL is the "New Covenant" of Jesus Christ that
went into effect when Jesus died on the cross
(Hebrews 9:15-17)
2. Following the RESURRECTION of Christ, He gave the
"CALL" of God in what is called the "Great Commission"
(Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15, 16; Luke 24:44-49)
3. IT IS SO IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT: THE LORD
"CALLS" US TO HIMSELF THROUGH THE GOSPEL!
(II Thessalonians 2:13, 14)
IV. AN EXPLANATION OF THE TEXT: The GOSPEL is GOD'S! It is not
MAN'S "CALL!" It is GOD who CALLS!
(Romans 1:1-7)
A. The APOSTLE PAUL was:
1. The "SLAVE" of Christ Jesus (1:1). This shows his dedication
Jesus
(See also Philippians 1:1; Titus 1:1)

to

2. "Called" to be an apostle, and "set apart," "separated" for the

GOSPEL OF GOD (1:1). This word is similar to the word
"sanctified" or "holy." Paul was "set apart" to this task on
the road to Damascus at his conversion (Acts 26:16-18)
3. As a "SLAVE," Paul had a "LORD," "Master," "Owner" -Jesus (1:4)
B. Paul spoke the GOSPEL OF GOD! (1:1). See the "gospel of God" in
15:16; II Corinthians 11:7; I Thessalonians 2:2, 8, 9. GOD was the
4
SOURCE and the AUTHORITY BEHIND THE MESSAGE! The
Gospel was the very CENTER of Paul's life!
C. The GOSPEL OF GOD was promised earlier by GOD'S PROPHETS

(1:2). We see that the LAW and the PROPHETS testified to God's
RIGHTEOUSNESS in the past (Romans 3:21)
D. These PROPHETS promised GOD'S GOSPEL beforehand in GOD'S
HOLY SCRIPTURES! (See also Romans 16:26; II Peter 3:16)
1. It is seen here that Paul recognized a BODY OF TRUTH that came
from GOD, the HOLY SCRIPTURES, the Old Testament
2. Paul stated that they were "INSPIRED" (God-breathed)
(II Timothy 3:16, 17)
3. The PROPHETS were GUIDED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
(II Peter 1:20,21). The Old Testament was from GOD!
4. The Old Testament "SCRIPTURES" spoke of the GOSPEL, even
the DEATH and RESURRECTION of Jesus
(I Corinthians 15:1-4)
5.

Paul said that his GOSPEL MESSAGE also was the WORD OF
GOD, NOT the word of man (I Thessalonians 2:13)

6. Men and women will be JUDGED by the WORDS OF JESUS

(John 12:48)
E. This GOSPEL OF GOD is concerning HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST (1:3-5)
1. The term JESUS CHRIST is found four times in Romans 1:1-7.
JESUS CHRIST is the center of these verses!
2. He is GOD'S SON, and He is to be OUR LORD! (1:3,4)
3. In "HUMAN NATURE," Jesus descended from DAVID (1:3)
a. The "Messiah," the "CHRIST" was to come from
DAVID (Isaiah 11:1, 10; Jeremiah 23:5, 6; 33:14-18;
Ezekiel 34:23-31; 37:24-28)
b. JESUS descended from DAVID (Matthew 1:1-16; Luke
1:27, 32, 69; 2:4; 3:23-31; Acts 2:30)
c. The PRINCE OF JUDAH was to be born in BETHLEHEM
(Micah 5:2; Matthew 2:1-6)
d. This descendant of DAVID became MAN:
5
(1) The "WORD BECAME FLESH" and dwelt among
men (John 1:14)
(2) He LEFT HEAVEN, and took the "FORM OF MAN"
(Philippians 2:5-8)

(3) As one who BECAME MAN, He serves as the

ONE MEDIATOR BETWEEN GOD AND MAN
(I Timothy 2:5). See below in Romans 1:5.
4. JESUS is GOD'S SON!

(1:4)

He is DEITY!

a. Through God's Spirit, He was declared to be the

"SON OF GOD WITH POWER." At His
resurrection, Jesus' status and AUTHORITY was declared.
b. He has ALL AUTHORITY in HEAVEN and on EARTH
(Matthew 28:18)
c. "LISTEN to HIM!" (Matthew 17:1-5)
d. God speaks THROUGH HIM! (Hebrews 1:1-3)
e. Jesus is LORD! (Romans 1:4)
(1) He is LORD and CHRIST! (Acts 2:36)
(2) Men must CONFESS HIM AS LORD!
(Romans 10:9, 10; Philippians 2:9-11)
(3) Make HIM Lord in our heart! (I Peter 3:15)
(4) He DIED and LIVES AGAIN that He may be our
LORD! (Romans 14:8, 9)
(5) He must be PREACHED as LORD!
(II Corinthians 4:5)
(6) Paul used the word "LORD" about 230 times in his
writings. Paul knew the meaning of "Lordship!"
f. Jesus Christ is the "SON OF GOD!" He is DIVINE! He is
DEITY! (Romans 1:4)
(1) As the "only begotten" from the Father, He has the
NATURE OF GOD.
(2) The "Word" who became "flesh" was "God!"
(John 1:1-3, 14). This is Jesus! (John 1:14-17)
6
(3) When Jesus called God His "Father," He was
affirming His DEITY! (John 5:17, 18)
(4) Doubting Thomas cried out to Jesus, "My LORD and
my GOD!" (John 20:28)
(5) The Father CREATED the WORLD THROUGH
CHRIST! (John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:15-17;

Hebrews 1:1-3)
(6) Jesus, as CREATOR, existed with the Father
BEFORE He was born of the VIRGIN MARY
(John 8:58; 17:5)
5. Jesus is MEDIATOR (Romans 1:5)
a. He was the ACTIVE AGENT "through whom" Paul received
the GRACE of APOSTLESHIP.
b. Paul also "thanked God through Jesus Christ" (Romans
(1:8). Jesus STANDS BETWEEN GOD AND MAN.
c. His position as MEDIATOR is clearly seen (Romans 7:25;
8:34; I Timothy 2:5; II Corinthians 1:20)
F. The GOSPEL OF GOD will bring "OBEDIENCE WHICH SPRINGS
FROM FAITH (Romans 1:5)
1. This same thought is also found in Romans 16:26
2. The Greek word for "OBEDIENCE" is found also in Romans
6:16, 17; 15:18; 16:19.
3. A true "BELIEVER" is always an "OBEDIENT" BELIEVER!
G. The GOSPEL OF GOD is for "ALL THE GENTILES" (1:5) All nations
are to receive this "GOOD NEWS." See also Romans 16:26;
Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:15.
H. The GOSPEL OF GOD is to bring HONOR TO JESUS! It is for the
SAKE OF HIS NAME! (1:5). See also Ephesians 1:6
SUMMARY: His GOSPEL! His PROPHETS! His SCRIPTURES!
His SON! His NAME!

7
V. Paul's HOPE as he SERVED in PREACHING the GOSPEL of GOD (1:8-15)
A. Paul felt VERY DEEPLY the "CALL" from God both to be God's
apostle to the Gentiles (Romans 1:1) and to be one of God's
beloved SAINTS (1:7)
B. He was very THANKFUL TO GOD for the FAITH of the Roman
Christians, and he PRAYED FOR THEM (1:8-10)

1. He PRAYED FOR THEM often (1:9)

2. Note again that Paul recognized that Jesus is MEDIATOR.
He approached God "through Jesus Christ." (1:8)
3. He had a COMMITMENT CONCERNING PRAYER (1:10). He
continually lived his life with the realization that he must be
guided by the PERMISSIVE WILL OF GOD (James 4:13-17).
"If God willed," PAUL WOULD VISIT THEM IN ROME!
C. Paul "SERVED" God with his "SPIRIT" (1:9).
1. The word translated "serve" not only refers to ALL ACTIVITY
IN OUR LIFE THAT IS OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST,
but it is also used in the context of "WORSHIP." It is used of Anna's
WORSHIP at the temple (Luke 2:37), but it is also used in
Romans 12:1 where it may be translated either "service" or
"worship." Our service to God is HONOR to Him!
2. Here, Paul uses the word "spirit" to refer to the HUMAN SPIRIT,
the reasoning, inner man. Man has a "spirit!" See this word
used with the same meaning in I Corinthians 5:3-5; 16:18;
II Corinthians 2:13; Galatians 6:18; I Thessalonians 5:23;
Philemon 25.
3. Note that the "GOSPEL" here is the "GOSPEL OF HIS SON (1:9)
4. God was Paul's "witness" that he longed to visit Rome! A form
of the phrase "God is my witness" is also used in II
Corinthians 1:23; Philippians 1:8; I Thessalonians 2:5, 10;
II Corinthians 11:31 and Galatians 1:20.
D. The apostle Paul had a DESIRE to visit the Roman Christians, and a
COMMITMENT to BENEFIT and ENCOURAGE THEM (Romans
1:11-15)
1. He wanted to visit them and "IMPART SOME SPIRITUAL GIFT"
(1:11)
a. Miraculous gifts of the Spirit were imparted by the
8
LAYING ON OF THE HANDS OF THE APOSTLES (Acts
8:14-17; See I Corinthians 12:1-11)
b. However, the word "gift" is also used for a "ministry"
(I Peter 4:10; Romans 12:4-7)
2. His desire was that these Roman Christians would be
"STRENGTHENED" and be "STABLE" in spiritual maturity
(Romans 1:11)
3. In their "FELLOWSHIP" together, they would mutually
ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER (1:12)

4. He had OFTEN WANTED TO VISIT THEM, but had been

HINDERED (Romans 1:13). Was this because the Jews, at
one time, had been forced to leave Rome?
(Acts 18:2).
Or, had Satan hindered him in some other way?
5. Paul desired to have "FRUIT" among them, even as he obtained
among other Gentiles, perhaps in Asia Minor, Macedonia, or
Achaia (Romans 1:13)
a. This word "fruit" may refer to "converts" in a
missionary context (Philippians 1:22; Colossians 1:6)
b. But, it is also used for BENEFICIAL ACTIVITY which
produces a good outcome and SPIRITUAL GROWTH.
THE FRUIT OF PROGRESS IN THE FAITH. See
Galatians 5:22, 23 for the "fruit of the Spirit."
6. The apostle Paul felt a deep OBLIGATION, a "DEBT" to preach
the gospel, to "EVANGELIZE" among BOTH "GREEKS" and
"BARBARIANS" (non-Greeks who spoke strange,
unintelligible languages), to those who were educated as
well as the uneducated (Romans 1:14, 15). This "obligation"
came forth from his "CALL" to be an apostle to the NATIONS
(Romans 1:5; 15:16-18).
PAUL WAS PREPARED TO PREACH AT ROME ALSO! WHY? Because of the GREAT
THESIS that he will discuss throughout Romans: THE GOSPEL IS GOD'S POWER FOR
SALVATION TO EVERYONE, BOTH JEWS AND GENTILES (Romans 1:16, 17)
