The activity is supposed to be good for refreshing the grammar of using

comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives+ degree modifiers. It was
designed as a fluency activity, but still with a focus on accurate grammar.
The ideas offered on the cards are quite thought-provoking and sometimes
contradicting, so they should start an interesting discussion in class (! Some cultural
issues might be touched)

(optional) to remind your students of the modifiers that can be used for
comparative and superlative adjective forms, you could ask them to make a list
before you start the activity. Or, if you prefer to save time and to keep your
students more focused, you can just use the list given in the worksheet.
1. Cut the cards (p.1) and put them face down on the table. If you have a group
of more than 2 students, you can play in 2 teams.
2. Each team takes a card where there are 2 or 3 things to comment on, using
adjectives in superlative or comparative form and a modifier.
(A list of modifiers is given (p.2), too, and can be used as a visual reminder
for the students.)
3. The team players have to produce from 1 to 4 sentences using all or some of
the ideas on the card and modifiers. After all the sentences are pronounced,
3

the other team (and perhaps the teacher) decides if all the sentences were
correct. For each correct sentence the team gets 1 point *. If a sentence is
wrong, it should be corrected, but the point for it isnt counted. A teacher
puts the score onto the board, and in the end the points are counted. The
team that has more points is the winner.
*If you want to encourage students involvement and accuracy, you can offer an
extra point in case 4 correct sentences using different modifiers are produced.
Key language
The sentences produced focus on comparative and superlative forms of adjectives
+ modifiers.
e.g. for the card

Getting married/ moving to a new place the examples could be:

getting married is as stressful and costly as moving to a new place.

Getting married is much more time-consuming than moving to a new place.
e.g. for the card Train/ plane/ car
Car is by far the most suitable means of transport for babies.
Going by plane is considered to be much less risky than by car
