Creating polygon model from DICOM

files in 3D Imaging workbench

1. Launch RapidForm.
2. Shift to 3D Imaging workbench.
3. Click File >> Open Dicom, then check on "Select All Files" and double click any
DICOM file.

4. Check on "VOI Box" and "3D Cursor" under the "Annotations" section in the
"General" tab.

5. Go to "Transfer" tab, check on "Interactive Apply" first. Then adjust the slide
bars in the "Transfer Function Editor" section. This is for seeing the rendered
image view in the right top window clearly. During this process, you may change
the rendered view. For this specific model, the settings are shown in the following
picture (you may change them according to your wish as long as the rendered
view can be seen clearly)

6. Go to VOI tab and adjust the slide bars of Min X, Max X, Min Y, Max Y, Min Z,
and Max Z to get a box bounding the volume of your interest.

7. Click Draw Polygon VOI under Polygonal VOI Extraction Option section,
then click OK in the Polygonal VOI Extraction Option dialog box.

8. Draw a polygon in the X-Y slice view window as shown in the following picture.
Be sure to include all the object inside it.

9. Click the Draw Polygon VOI button again and check off Defined Polygon
Display in order to see the object.
10. Go to "Segmentation" tab. Set the "Bottom Value" to 102 and "Top Value" to
905. While adjusting these two values, look carefully at the slice images in the
three right bottom windows to make sure that you dont filter something needed.
These two values vary for different models, so for each model, you should find
out the optimal ones by trying different values.

11. Go back to General tab and change the Sampling Rate of Volume (3 Axes)
under the Subsampling section from 2 to 1.

12. Click 3D Imaging >> Generate Polygonal Isosurface.

13. A polygonal model appears in the right top window. If the result is satisfied, click
3D Imaging >> Make Shell, otherwise, click 3D Imaging >> Delete Polygonal
Isosurface and generate polygonal isosurface again after changing some
parameters like Top Value and Bottom Value, etc.
14. Check Use Polygonal VOI Information and click OK in the Make Shell
Option dialog box.

15. RapidForm automatically shifts to Polygon workbench, and if you dont see the
generated polygonal model, click View >> Reset to bring it back to the viewport.
16. Press F4 and rotate the polygonal model in order to get a clear shaded view.

17. Apply Measure >> Cross Section >> Shell to check the inside of the model.

18. Optimize the polygonal model inside Polygon workbench such as smoothing,
etc.
Note: The above is just a typical process in creating a polygonal model in 3D Imaging
workbench. Your may try setting other parameters, which possibly can lead a better
result. In short, try it out yourself.
