Course Objectives:

To Learn about different forces during metal cutting and there effects

To study differnt types of cutting tool material and their design consideration, theory of
metal cutting

To study temperature distribution while metal cutting, its dynamometry, tool life and
cutting fluids used

Metal Cutting Tools: Basic Concepts : Definition of metal cutting tool,
Classification of metal cutting tool, Pre-requisites of cutting tool, Standard angles of
cutting tool, Working angles, Cutting tool nomenclature system, Reference planes,
Cutting tool signature, Geometry of cutting tool, Factors affecting tool geometry,
Cutting tool nomenclature
Introduction to Materials and Processes : Material and there necessity for
engineering application, Types of material, Overview of mfg. process, Constructional
features of basic machines
Unit II
Cutting Tool Materials : Introduction, Characteristics of tool material, Types of tool
material, Characteristics and uses of diamond tool, Comparison of cutting tool
material, Non-ferrous cutting tool material, Non-metallic cutting tool material
Design Of Metal Cutting Tools : Introduction, Elements of cutting tool design,
Forces acting on cutting tool, Brazed tool seats, Cut-off, boring, brazed tipped,
