The problem for the UILS, Intra Moot Court Competition, 2015 shall be based on
Consumer/Torts/Contract Law for Group I and Constitutional Law for Group II (Groups I and
II as defined herein-under). The Competition shall be held from 26th February to 27th
February 2015 at University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University.

Language
The Competition shall be open for students pursuing five years LL.B. Degree
Course from UILS, PU and no other. For the purpose of the Competition, the
students are divided into two groups. Group I consists of the students from the 1st
and the 2nd year of the course. Group II consists of the students of 3rd, 4th and 5th
year.

This year for students from the Group 1 who wish to work on the Group 2
problem will be allowed to take part in the Group 2 Moot . Students from Group 1 can
now form teams with students of Group 2 and compete with and against their seniors .
This policy however does not work vice versa for the Group 2 students and they
cannot register for Group 1.

Each team shall be allotted a code on registration, which shall identify the
team throughout the competition. Teams must not reveal their identity or any other
personal details in the written submissions or at any time during the Competition, or
at the request of the judges. Revelation of identity shall ensue such consequences as
the authorities may deem fit.

Team Composition
1.
three members. This team composition cannot be altered under any circumstance.

Every team shall consist of two speakers. Teams may have only one
researcher.
3.
Students taking part in the Group I can form a team with students of either 1 st year or
the 2nd year. Students taking part in Group II Moot can form a team with any year student.

There shall be 2 moot propositions, one each for Group I and Group II.

The researcher shall sit with the speakers during the orals.

Memorial marks will be counted in all the rounds as part of the team score.
Scoring
Maximum scores for the oral rounds shall be 100 points per speaker. The oral rounds shall
be judged on the following criteria:
Knowledge of Law : 20 Points
Application of Law to Facts : 20 Points
Ingenuity and Ability to Answer to Questions : 20 Points
Style, Poise, Courtesy and Demeanor : 20 Points
Time Management : 10 Points
Organization : 10 Points
Preliminary Rounds
1. Lots will be drawn during the Orientation on 25th February 2015 at 2:00 PM in the
Moot Court Hall. Draw of lots shall be followed by the exchange of memorials.
2. There will be two preliminary rounds of arguments per team. Each team shall argue
both for the Complainant/Appellant / Petitioner and Opposite party/Respondent/ Defendant in
the preliminary round.
3. In the preliminary round, each team will have thirty minutes to present their case.
This time will include rebuttal and sur-rebuttal. This time may be divided between the two
speakers, but each speaker shall speak for a minimum of twelve minutes.

No two teams shall face each other more than once in the preliminary rounds.
5.
All efforts will be made to ensure that no team faces the same bench more than
once.

7. Four teams from each Group will proceed to the semi-finals, on the basis of number
of wins. In case of a tie the team with greater number of points shall proceed to the SemiFinals.

1. The semi-final and final rounds shall take place on 27th February 2015 .
2. In the semi-final and final rounds, each team will have forty-five
minutes to present their case, and each speaker must speak for a minimum of twenty
minutes.

General Rules
The following guidelines must be strictly followed for the memorials. Noncompliance will
entail penalties as provided below:

The teams must submit in advance one soft copy and one hard copy of
their memorials for evaluation by 23rd February, 2015 before 3:00 P.M.. The hard
copy has to be submitted in the room of the faculty in-charge while the soft copy must
be emailed to mootingsocietyuils@gmail.com under subject 2014 Intra MootMemorials Group 1/ Group 2 . Requests for extension will not be granted under
any circumstances.

Format
1. The memorials shall be in Times New Roman, font size 12 pts for text and spaced at
1.5 and 10 pts for footnotes spaced at 1. (Except for the cover page, table of contents and
table of authorities). All citations of authorities must be given only as footnotes and not in the
text of the arguments.
2. All pages in the memorial should be numbered. Reference to corresponding page
numbers should be given in the Table of Contents and Index of Authorities.
3. In the memorial teams shall observe a uniform mode of citation. Teams may refer to
Basic Legal Citation available at .law.cornell.edu/citation/, or
OSCOLA: The Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities available at
denning.law.ox.ac.uk/published/oscola_2006.pdf. any other standard legal citation.
Scoring
1. The maximum scores for the memorials shall be 100 points. The memorials shall be

Finalists from both groups will also have the opportunity to represent UILS in a
National/ International Moot Court Competition of their choice in the academic year
2015-2016.

Miscellaneous
1. The judges decision shall be final as to conduct of proceedings in the oral rounds.
Any grievance in the conduct of the competition may be addressed to the Coordinator of the
Competition, whose decision shall be final.
2. Dress Code:
Boys: Western formals, i.e., white shirt, black trousers and tie.
Girls: Indian formals, i.e., White Sari or Salwar-Kurta, or Western formals, i.e., white shirt,
black trousers/skirt.
Wearing a coat is not compulsory, but recommended. Teams shall not wear bands and gowns.
