Licensing Requirements
Customers must be licensed for all front-end terabytes protected by NetBackup. There should be no instances
where the number of front-end terabytes backed up exceeds the number of front-end terabytes licensed; in this
case the customer is out of compliance and must purchase additional front end terabyte licenses.
The NetBackup Platform Base license must be purchased for all front-end terabytes in the NetBackup domain.
The NetBackup Platform Data Protection Optimization Add-on and the NetBackup Platform RealTime Add-on
licenses can be purchased for the distinct terabytes that they will protect.
For example, the size of the total environment is 10 terabytes, 3 of the terabytes will be protected with the
NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on and 2 with RealTime Protection, the licensing requirements
would be the following;
Customers can utilize both the Platform Base Complete Edition and the Platform Base NDMP Edition
within the same domain
The Platform Base Complete Edition and the Platform Base NDMP Edition can be utilized within the same
domain or across multiple domains, as long as the total number of front-end terabytes is licensed separately
for each Edition, but again, cant mix the Platform Base licensing model and the Traditional licensing model
within the same domain.
For example, the size of the total environment is 10 terabyte, 3 of the terabytes are protected using NDMP.
The licensing requirements would be the following:
Additionally, the NetBackup Platform Data Protection Optimization Add-on and the NetBackup Platform
RealTime Add-on can both be added-on to either the Platform Base Complete Edition or the Platform Base
NDMP Edition. You cannot purchase the Data Pr or the NBU RealTime add-on that is not licensed with the
Platform Base

It is recommended that a growth rate should be factored into the Front-End capacity estimate (e.g., 50GB of
data today estimated growth of 20% a year (10 additional GBs by the end of the year) = 60 GB of front-end
data to protect over the next year.
Both NetBackup Accelerator and NetBackup intelligent deduplication features offered in Data Protection
Optimization Add-on helps to optimize the resources needed (storage, bandwidth, client resources etc.) for
backups and hence included in the same SKU. This SKU is licensed on FETB basis whether the customer is
using traditional or platform based licensing. For platform based licensing, this is an add-on. This is similar to
how deduplication was licensed in previous releases of NetBackup.
Notes:
The calculated number of front-end terabytes is typically determined using a 30 day reporting window.
For a given client, the largest aggregate full (or synthetic full) backup performed during the reporting
window is the calculated size, even if the data has been subsequently deleted
The quantity of pre-deduplicated data protected is used in the FETB calculation
Archived data is not calculated unless it is backed up by NetBackup. If archived data is protected by
NetBackup then the amount of data residing in the archive is measured
OpsCenter includes a license deployment report which may be used to monitor and maintain capacity
compliance
Determine the total amount of source data to be protected (measured in front-end terabytes) for the
term of the agreement (e.g. how much data will the customer have in 1, 2, or 3 years)
Determine total amount of source data that will be protected by the NetBackup Data Protection

Migration Methodology
Licenses are migrated using a list-for-list methodology. Maintenance is converted using a list-for-list
methodology with pro-rating for any portion of the maintenance that has been consumed. Customers will
receive credit for any unused maintenance and it will be applied to the required purchase of 1 year of Essential
maintenance. Once license and maintenance migration value is determined, it will be subtracted from the cost
of NetBackup Platform licenses and maintenance.
Consideration in a License Model Switch or Conversion
Migration Process
Symantec Sales Representative contacts Symantec Regional Sales Operations and provides the
customers current install base record
Symantec Regional Sales Operations will determine license migration credit using the Migration Tool
and provide it to the Sales Representative
Symantec Sales Representative will generate a quote based on the migration credit and the required
quantity and type of licenses

Example:
A customer bought 500 NetBackup Platform Base licenses 1 year ago to cover 500 terabytes of data.
The customer now wants to purchase an additional 50 terabytes of the NetBackup Platform Base
license, as well as 550 terabytes of the Platform Deduplication Add-on to cover their entire environment.
Since historical terabytes purchased are not accounted for when choosing the correct SKU/band, the
customer should purchase 50 of the 25 74 TBs Platform Base SKU. The customer should also
purchase 550 of the 450 599 TBs Platform Dedupe Add-On SKU

NetBackup 7.5
The NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option consists of two purchased license components. The first is the
Key Management Server (KMS) for centralized and secure key management. A minimum of one Key
Management Server is required. The second component is the Media Server Encryption license. One Media
Server Encryption license is required for each NetBackup Media or SAN media server which will encrypt data.
The MSEO KMS can be installed on a NetBackup system (typically the master) or can be running on a system
not running NetBackup.
The Media Server Encryption Option is not included in the NetBackup Platform per Terabyte licensing model,
but may be added by purchasing it for each media server it will run on, plus the MSEO Key Management
Server license. MSEO may only be used for tape drives and should not be proposed for LTO4, LTO5 and
T10000 tape drives.
In contrast, the NetBackup KMS can be used to provide encryption keys for LTO4/5, TS1120/30/40 and T10000B/C
tape drives. The tape drive vendor may require a separate license to enable the encryption functionality on the tape
drive, but a customer does not need to purchase the tape drive vendor's key management server to manage the
tape drive keys, NetBackup KMS would the key management. The NetBackup KMS manages keys on a per
domain basis. There is no charge for using the NetBackup KMS.

Licensing for NetBackup RealTime server is the same as with the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization
Add-on, and is based on the amount of front-end data to be protected on source systems by the RealTime
server. This is the only licensing required for RealTime to operate as a standalone product.
When sold as an add-on to an existing NetBackup environment, the RealTime server acts as a snapshot
provider for the NetBackup Snapshot Client. The Enterprise Client license is required for the Snapshot Client
capability, and optionally the Application and Database Pack license when NetBackup agents are also used.
See the clients and agents licensing sections for details.

For example, if two NetBackup Master Servers protect single physical client box, two client licenses are
required. Additionally, if two NetBackup Master Servers are configured in single physical server box, two
licenses are required.
NetBackup Standard Client
The NetBackup Standard Client license is used to protect systems that function as servers. A system
provides services to more than one user and is considered a group or company resource controlled by a
system administrator, Information System organization, or similar.
This license entitles customers to protect a server with a traditional NetBackup client (LAN-based backup). A
standard client license also entitles customers to use either Bare Metal Restore or NetBackup Client
Encryption capabilities.
Note: Bare Metal Restore and NetBackup Client Encryption cannot be used together.
Product Description

Notes:
Major platforms supported by the Standard Client include Windows, UNIX, Linux, Solaris x64,
OpenVMS, Mac OS X, NetWare and Free BSD. For specific platforms and versions. Refer to the
NetBackup OS Compatibility Guide for more information.
NetBackup Client support for Red Hat Linux and SUSE Linux on IBMs zSeries is licensed per virtual
machine.
Open File Support - No additional licenses or costs are required to protect files while open or in use.
The NetBackup Standard Client license entitles a customer to install and use a NetBackup Standard Client for
use with the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option.
The NetBackup licensing model does not require the licensing of individual virtual machines (VM), but for the
physical host on which the protected VMs reside. One or more licenses are needed for each physical host
machine as described in the table below. When a protected VM is copied, moved, or otherwise transferred
between physical hosts, each participating physical host must be licensed, e.g. clustering, load-balancing,
replication, etc.

Application and Database Pack Option Licensing Considerations
Symantec Enterprise Vault
An Application and Database Pack license is not required for customers using NetBackup 7.5. Existing
NetBackup customers can obtain this functionality be requesting a new license key for NetBackup Server or
NetBackup Enterprise Server from Symantec Customer Care.
Note: A Standard or Enterprise Client license is required.
Microsoft SharePoint
If SharePoint is deployed on a single, standalone machine, only 1 license is required. Otherwise, for a multiserver farm, consider the following for counting licenses required:
1 license covers all front-end web servers, including load-balanced web servers
1 license is needed for each SQL Server
1 license is needed for each Index Server
Do not exceed 1 license per machine
Exchange 2010
If the Exchange server performs a mailbox role a license is required, regardless of the other roles it

If the Exchange server only performs a CAS role then a license is not required. The license key for an
Exchange server performing a mailbox role can be used on this server.
A license is not required on an Exchange Edge Server or on an Exchange Hub Server, as these
servers do not store data.

Notes:
Please see the NetBackup Hardware Tier Matrix in order to select the correct server tier.
NetBackup Server
Designed to be a cost effective data protection solution for midsize environments, NetBackup Server is
licensed per NetBackup Server storage domain. A NetBackup Server storage domain supports one backup
Server protecting multiple clients and NDMP NAS systems. Not all agents and options are supported with
NetBackup Server (see previous section).
Product Description
License
Notes:
For smaller customers (small to mid-market) interested NetBackup Server, no greater than a Tier-2 type
server, it might be worth considering the NetBackup Starter Packs. Please refer to the respective Pricing
and Licensing guide section for more information.
Server Environment Licensing Considerations
Blade Servers
NetBackup components (Servers, Clients, Agents, and Options) are licensed per physical system. Therefore,
each blade server will require separate NetBackup licenses. NetBackup is not licensed per rack of servers.
Cluster Environments
NetBackup licenses (servers, clients, agents, and options) are required for all nodes of a cluster. However,
customers are entitled to install and use one additional copy of the licensed software per the conditions set
forth in the Cold Disaster Recovery Licensing Policy.
The Master/Media Server in a NetBackup Server (two tier) configuration is only supported in a clustered
environment on Windows and using Veritas Cluster Server or Microsoft Cluster Server. (In this case only one
NetBackup Server license is required for the active node.) However, NetBackup Clients, Options, and Agents
that are attached to a NetBackup Server are supported in a clustered environment using the same clustering
combinations supported with NetBackup Enterprise Server.

Note: NetBackup Shared Storage Option maintains an open support policy for all SAN equipment. To ensure
reliability and performance, all servers must recognize the drives, via the SAN, before installation of NetBackup
software.

NetBackup 7.5
Example 1:
A NetApp FAS3050c has two clustered heads with only one active controller. A single NDMP Tier 3
license is required. If both controllers are active a single NDMP Tier 4 license is required.
Example 2:
An EMC NS84 has four data movers (according to EMC, the last digit is the number of data movers). A
single NDMP Tier 4 license is required.
Licensing is per NDMP NAS (host) regardless of the configuration (local, 3-way, or Remote NDMP). For
example, if a customer has 5 NDMP-enabled NAS devices that require backup or restore services from
NetBackup, 5 NetBackup for NDMP licenses would be required.
A small number of tape libraries also implement NDMP (use of this capability was more common prior to
NetBackup adding SSO support for NDMP in NetBackup 6.0) and these also require a NDMP license.
NDMP licenses are also required when using NetBackup managed NAS snapshots. When NetBackup is used
to manage NAS snapshots, the NDMP host on which the snapshots are taken requires the appropriately tiered
NDMP license.
When NDMP is only used for duplication of backup images, such as with the VTL direct-to-tape or OST to tape,
there is no need to purchase a NDMP license as that NDMP functionality is already enabled within NetBackup

Refer to the NetBackup Hardware Tier Matrix in order to select the correct server tier.
In traditional licensing model, licensing NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is identical to licensing
a NetBackup environment such that Symantec licenses for a client component and an infrastructure
component are required.

Licensing for clients and database and applications is identical to NetBackup. Symantec requires a Standard
or Enterprise Client license for every protected system. Licensing for the infrastructure component, the
NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option, is based on the amount of front-end data to be protected on
source systems (front-end terabyte). If a media server is used as part of the configuration, a NetBackup
Enterprise Server or NetBackup Server license is required.
The use of NetBackup Accelerator with third-party OpenStorage devices require that the OpenStorage partner
provides a qualified plug-in. OST plug-ins are typically available asynchronously from the NetBackup release.
Be sure to check that the OpenStorage device is qualified for NetBackup Accelerator support before quoting
Data Protection Optimization Option for use with third party OpenStorage devices.
For clarity, customers using third-party OpenStorage partner storage devices that have deduplication
capabilities, like EMC Data Domain, that want to take advantage of the NetBackup Accelerator performance
advantages, must licensing the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option.
Calculating Front-End Terabyte Capacity
A front-end terabyte is defined as the total aggregate amount of data on Clients or Devices on which
NetBackup is installed or for which NetBackup is used to provide backup functionality.
The actual data to be protected is measured, not the capacity of storage on which it resides or the aggregate
amount of data backed up to disk. Data is measured as the current largest aggregate full (or synthetic full)
backup performed. A terabyte is defined as 1024 gigabytes. For example, a system with a 500GB hard drive
holding 50GB of data to be protected would be measured as 50GB of Front End capacity.
This is similar to
how deduplication was licensed in previous releases of NetBackup High Availability with Veritas Cluster Server
The NetBackup PureDisk Storage Pool can be configured for high availability using Storage Foundation and
Veritas Cluster Server. There are no additional licenses required to access these features. When a customer
licenses NetBackup Deduplication Option capacity, they are entitled to deploy this software as part of their
PureDisk storage pool configuration. The software code for Storage Foundation for Linux and Veritas Cluster
Server is included with the download packages and media.

NetBackup Virtual Tape Feature
NetBackup Virtual Tape feature enables support for 3rd party virtual tape offerings.
Supports unlimited number of virtual tape drives
Includes sharing of virtual tape drives; no SSO license required
A list of NetBackup supported virtual tape libraries can be located on the NetBackup Device and Library
Compatibility Matrix: http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support.
NetBackup Vault
NetBackup Vault requires a license for each physical tape drive in physical tape libraries used as the source or
destination for Vaulting. NetBackup Vault is licensed per NetBackup Storage Domain (i.e., one NetBackup
Enterprise Master Server or NetBackup Server) and includes four NetBackup Vault physical tape drive licenses.
If more than four physical tape drives are used in the libraries for deduplication pruposes, a NetBackup Vault
Additional Drive license would be required for each drive. A NetBackup Vault Unlimited Drive license provides
support for unrestricted number of drives per NetBackup Storage Domain.
The new Storage Lifecycle Policy feature can be used for duplicating backup images from one tape library to
another one, instead of using NetBackup Vault for duplication. If this is done, only the physical tape drives in
the library ejecting tapes to be sent off-site and managed by NetBackup Vault would require NetBackup Vault
tape drive licenses.
The unlimited drive SKU includes the base NetBackup Vault license
ALL physical tape drives in a library used for vaulting require a NetBackup Vault license
When a VTL is the primary NetBackup storage and a customer wishes to run a duplication job to physical tape
for offsite storage, the customer must have an appropriate tape drive licenses.
NetBackup Vault Additional Drive licenses are not required when only one copy of the backup is being created
and vaulted.
License Example
A customer either uses NetBackup Vault to duplicate backup images from a VTL to a 10-drive physical tape
library or uses Storage Lifecycle Polices to perform backup image duplication, but uses NetBackup Vault to
track tapes sent off-site. This would require a NetBackup Vault Base license and six NetBackup Vault
Additional Drive licenses.

The product, product version and duration of the Cold Disaster Recovery license and the underlying
production license of the must be identical.
The right to use the Cold Disaster Recovery Licenses will automatically terminate if the customers is
fails to stay current on maintenance for the underlying licensed software.
With the exception of Failover Readiness Testing, for up to twelve days per calendar year, the Cold
Disaster Recovery Licenses cannot be used simultaneously with the production licenses
The Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment on which Cold Disaster Recovery Licenses are deployed must
be turned off or remain idle except for: use in the case of an actual Disaster; or use in the case when a
production server in a cluster of servers fails and production work is failed-over to a designated cold
or idle server that is part of the cluster in conjunction with an actual Disaster or as part of a test.
In the event of an actual Disaster, the Cold Disaster Recovery License may be used in production for a
period of up to ninety successive calendar days. At the conclusion of such period, if the production site
has not been restored, the customer must request Symantec in writing for a transfer of the production
license to the Disaster Recovery Site in accordance with Symantecs then-current transfer policies.
Fees may be applicable to any such transfers.
Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment or Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment means a server, processor or

Upgrade Paths
Current NetBackup Customers
Current customers receive an automatic notification email and letter that announces the availability of a new
version and provides the serial number needed to register at the Customer Care License Portal. Customer
Care should be able to help customers who did not receive this notification.
The preferred download method from FileConnect is the managed download. This is the better option because
the download can resume if interrupted. The http download will restart the download process.
If your customer has any issues generating their license keys at the License Portal please pro-actively help by
working with customer care. The NetBackup business team substantially streamlined NetBackup 7.5 licensing
so your customer may likely have questions.

NetBackup 7.5
Basic Support is for small businesses that need consistent, basic support with timely software updates.
Customers include small offices and home offices with a limited number of users, running a single server with
one or to Symantec products licensed where continuous uptime is not required. No IT activity is likely to take
place after regional business hours.
Extended Support
Extended Support is for businesses that have an increased need for uninterrupted availability of their data and
require around-the-clock support. These customers are usually single-location, homogeneous environments
that run workgroup servers and multiple database together with Symantec products. IT activity during off-hours
is limited.
