Changes in Pricing and Licensing at NetBackup 7.5

The release of NetBackup 7.5 marks several significant pricing and licensing changes that simplify selling
NetBackup. The following provides a summary of those changes.
WHAT CHANGED

DESCRIPTION

Introduction of NetBackup Replication

Director

NetBackup Replication Director enables integrated end-to-end control for

the management and recovery of array-based snapshots and replicated
snapshots, leveraging the array vendors underlying snapshot and
replication technology.
License implication: included in Platform Base license and as Option for

NetBackup 7.5

Using the Pricing and Licensing Guide

This licensing guide is organized in sections by licensing model type: Platform Base model and Traditional
model. The Supporting Information section includes helpful information in planning and deploying licensing in
environments. Customers may choose between licensing models, but cannot mix and match license models
within the same NetBackup domain.

NetBackup Licensing Models

Symantec currently offers customers two licensing models through which to purchase NetBackup. Both
licensing models offer different benefits and to ensure the optimal solution, customers are encouraged to work
with Symantec to understand which model is most advantageous for their environment.
For clarification, some products are sold in the Traditional model on a front-end terabyte meter. While this is a
capacity based meter, this is different than the Platform Base model, which is a bundled offering where every
piece of the solution is on the front-end terabyte meter.
NetBackup Platform Base Licensing Model
This model enables customers to license NetBackup based on how much source data that is protected rather
than the number of NetBackup components deployed. The Platform Base licensing offers two editions:
Complete and NDMP. The Complete Edition includes all source data being protected, with no distinction with
how the data is being protected, in the capacity calculation. The NDMP Edition offers a reduced licensing fee
for data being backed up using NDMP.
The Platform Base model is beneficial to customers who have or plan to deploy advanced features of
NetBackup such as Enterprise Client, Application and Database Packs, Data Protection Optimization and
RealTime. There are only two base bundles in this model, which simplifies license management.
NetBackup Traditional Licensing Model
The Traditional licensing model is based on the number of NetBackup Clients, Servers, and Options that
NetBackup will be protecting or run on. A customer purchases the same number of licenses as the count of the
clients, servers and options. As they deploy additional NetBackup clients or servers or attach additional tape
drives or storage to NetBackup, additional licenses appropriate NetBackup products are required.

NetBackup 7.5

NetBackup Platform Base Licensing Model

NetBackup Platform Base licensing is a capacity based model using the amount of source data protected per
terabyte as the calculation meter. This model is commonly referred to as Front-End Terabyte (FETB) licensing.
The Platform Base model enables customers to license NetBackup based on how much source data that is
protected rather than the number of NetBackup infrastructure and option components deployed as with
Traditional licensing.
The Platform Base model is beneficial to customers who currently have or plan to deploy advanced features of
NetBackup such as Enterprise Client, Application and Database Packs, Deduplication Option and RealTime.
The Platform Base licensing model supports customers with multiple locations within the same domain, and
customers with multiple domains, as long as the total number of front-end terabytes is licensed. Customers
with multiple domains also have the option of using different licensing models in each respective domain, but
customers are not allowed to utilize both the Platform Base licensing model and the Traditional licensing model
within the same domain. Customers with more than 25 front-end terabytes are recommended to consider the
VPA program.
The Platform Base licensing model offers two editions: Complete and NDMP. The Complete Edition includes
all source data being protected, with no distinction with how the data is being protected, in the capacity
calculation. The NDMP Edition offers a reduced licensing fee for data being backed up using NDMP.
The Platform Base licensing model does not include all NetBackup features and products. Data Protection
Optimization and RealTime are available add-ons. NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO) and
Symantec Desktop and Laptop Option (DLO) are not included in the Platform Base licensing model and can be
licensed separately. For this reason, customers can purchase MSEO and DLO within a domain that is
licensed through the Platform Base licensing model.

NetBackup Platform Base Licensing Benefits

Deployment for optimal performance with the entitlement to NetBackup limited only by the amount for
front end terabytes - customers can deploy the optimal configuration and architecture
Easy and economical way to obtain advanced features
Simplified pricing and licensing compliance - single metric to understand, track and comply thus
reducing cost of acquisition and license management

Platform Base Features and Product Inclusion

Platform Base Complete Edition
The Complete Edition includes the following NetBackup features and products as a part of the licensing. There
is no distinction made between the source and type of protection. If the customer has a large amount of data
that will be protected using NDMP, the Platform Base NDMP Edition may be the preferred licensing
mechanism.

Platform Base NDMP Edition

The NDMP Edition includes the following NetBackup features and products as a part of the licensing. There is
a distinction for NDMP data being protected. It is offered for customers that need to back up large amounts of
data that will be protected using NDMP and provides a reduced capacity licensing fee. The Platform Base
NDMP Edition is only available for front-end terabytes that are protected using NDMP and may not be used for
any other purpose.

Licensing Requirements
Customers must be licensed for all front-end terabytes protected by NetBackup. There should be no instances
where the number of front-end terabytes backed up exceeds the number of front-end terabytes licensed; in this
case the customer is out of compliance and must purchase additional front end terabyte licenses.
The NetBackup Platform Base license must be purchased for all front-end terabytes in the NetBackup domain.
The NetBackup Platform Data Protection Optimization Add-on and the NetBackup Platform RealTime Add-on
licenses can be purchased for the distinct terabytes that they will protect.
For example, the size of the total environment is 10 terabytes, 3 of the terabytes will be protected with the
NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on and 2 with RealTime Protection, the licensing requirements
would be the following;

10 terabytes of NetBackup Platform,

3 terabytes of the NetBackup Platform Data Protection Optimization Add-on and
2 terabytes of the NetBackup Platform RealTime Add-on

Customers can utilize both the Platform Base Complete Edition and the Platform Base NDMP Edition
within the same domain
The Platform Base Complete Edition and the Platform Base NDMP Edition can be utilized within the same
domain or across multiple domains, as long as the total number of front-end terabytes is licensed separately
for each Edition, but again, cant mix the Platform Base licensing model and the Traditional licensing model
within the same domain.
For example, the size of the total environment is 10 terabyte, 3 of the terabytes are protected using NDMP.
The licensing requirements would be the following:

7 terabytes of the NetBackup Platform Base Complete Edition,

3 terabytes of the NetBackup Platform Base NDMP Edition

Additionally, the NetBackup Platform Data Protection Optimization Add-on and the NetBackup Platform
RealTime Add-on can both be added-on to either the Platform Base Complete Edition or the Platform Base
NDMP Edition. You cannot purchase the Data Pr or the NBU RealTime add-on that is not licensed with the
Platform Base

Measuring Platform Capacity

NetBackup Platform model uses front-end terabyte as the licensing meter. Front-end terabyte is defined as the
total aggregate amount of data on Clients or Devices on which NetBackup is installed or for which NetBackup
is used to provide backup functionality.
The actual data to be protected is measured, not the capacity of storage on which it resides or the aggregate
amount of data backed up to disk. Data is measured as the current largest aggregate full (or synthetic full)
backup performed. A terabyte is defined as 1024 gigabytes. For example, a system with a 500GB hard drive
holding 50GB of data to be protected would be measured as 50GB of Front End capacity.
You will need the following information to determine license quantity:

Amount of front-end terabytes to be protected

Estimated growth rate in source data

It is recommended that a growth rate should be factored into the Front-End capacity estimate (e.g., 50GB of
data today estimated growth of 20% a year (10 additional GBs by the end of the year) = 60 GB of front-end
data to protect over the next year.
Both NetBackup Accelerator and NetBackup intelligent deduplication features offered in Data Protection
Optimization Add-on helps to optimize the resources needed (storage, bandwidth, client resources etc.) for
backups and hence included in the same SKU. This SKU is licensed on FETB basis whether the customer is
using traditional or platform based licensing. For platform based licensing, this is an add-on. This is similar to
how deduplication was licensed in previous releases of NetBackup.
Notes:

The calculated number of front-end terabytes is typically determined using a 30 day reporting window.
For a given client, the largest aggregate full (or synthetic full) backup performed during the reporting
window is the calculated size, even if the data has been subsequently deleted
The quantity of pre-deduplicated data protected is used in the FETB calculation
Archived data is not calculated unless it is backed up by NetBackup. If archived data is protected by
NetBackup then the amount of data residing in the archive is measured
OpsCenter includes a license deployment report which may be used to monitor and maintain capacity
compliance

Licensing for New NetBackup Customers

Determine the total amount of source data to be protected (measured in front-end terabytes) for the
term of the agreement (e.g. how much data will the customer have in 1, 2, or 3 years)
Determine total amount of source data that will be protected by the NetBackup Data Protection
Optimization Add-on and NetBackup RealTime

Licensing for Existing NetBackup Customers

Existing NetBackup customers may migrate the existing NetBackup Traditional licenses to the NetBackup
Platform Base licensing model. Customers will receive credit for all existing NetBackup licenses which have
active maintenance.

Migration Methodology
Licenses are migrated using a list-for-list methodology. Maintenance is converted using a list-for-list
methodology with pro-rating for any portion of the maintenance that has been consumed. Customers will
receive credit for any unused maintenance and it will be applied to the required purchase of 1 year of Essential
maintenance. Once license and maintenance migration value is determined, it will be subtracted from the cost
of NetBackup Platform licenses and maintenance.
Consideration in a License Model Switch or Conversion

Customers can convert between licensing models at any time

Customers are required to purchase one year of Essential Maintenance
One conversion back to the traditional model from the capacity model is free within the first 2 years
though there may be additional license or maintenance required for their environment which would not
be free. After 2 years there is a 15% license conversion fee

Migration Process

Symantec Sales Representative contacts Symantec Regional Sales Operations and provides the
customers current install base record
Symantec Regional Sales Operations will determine license migration credit using the Migration Tool
and provide it to the Sales Representative
Symantec Sales Representative will generate a quote based on the migration credit and the required
quantity and type of licenses

NetBackup Platform Base Licensing in the Enterprise VPA Program

Symantec offers volume-based pricing for the NetBackup Platform Base licensing exclusively in the Symantec
Enterprise VPA Program. The introduction of volume based pricing will provide customers with a lower per
terabyte MSRP for larger purchases. The program offers a number of SKU/bands for different amounts of
terabytes. The program includes the following licensing components: Platform Base Complete Edition, Data
Protection Optimization Add-on, and RealTime Add-on.
Customers must purchase using the appropriate banded SKU. The appropriate SKU contains the customers
total terabytes purchased within the SKUs banding. The customer then purchases X quantity of the
appropriate SKU, where X represents the total number of terabytes being purchased. The customers total
historical terabytes purchased should not be included when choosing the correct band, only terabytes being
purchased in the current transaction.

Licensing and Pricing Guide

NetBackup 7.5

Example:

A customer bought 500 NetBackup Platform Base licenses 1 year ago to cover 500 terabytes of data.
The customer now wants to purchase an additional 50 terabytes of the NetBackup Platform Base
license, as well as 550 terabytes of the Platform Deduplication Add-on to cover their entire environment.
Since historical terabytes purchased are not accounted for when choosing the correct SKU/band, the
customer should purchase 50 of the 25 74 TBs Platform Base SKU. The customer should also
purchase 550 of the 450 599 TBs Platform Dedupe Add-On SKU

Platform Base Licensing Steps

1. Determine the total amount front-end terabytes to be protected and the expected data growth rate
2. Determine of the total amount front-end terabytes how much will be protected by the NetBackup Data
Protection Optimization Option and/or NetBackup RealTime
The following NetBackup capabilities are included in the NetBackup Platform Base license when accounted for
as described in section Measuring Front-end Terabyte.

Platform Base Licensing Add-ons and Options

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on
NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on is designed to provide a set of NetBackup features enhancing
data protection by optimizing storage requirements, network bandwidth usage, impact on client systems etc.
This is an aggregated license that provides a number of features.
NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication Features
All intelligent deduplication features provided by NetBackup are part of the NetBackup Data Protection
Optimization Add-on license. Starting in NetBackup 7.5, the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on
replaces the NetBackup Deduplication Add-on. Customers who have NetBackup Deduplication Add-on from
previous NetBackup versions are entitled to use the same quantity of the new Data Protection Optimization
Add-on licenses at no additional cost in both traditional and platform per terabyte licensing models.
NetBackup Accelerator Feature
The NetBackup Accelerator feature is included in the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on license.
The NetBackup Accelerator feature requires sending backups to a disk pool that supports NetBackup
Optimized Synthetics technology. A NetBackup intelligent deduplication pool, NetBackup Cloud-store pool or
compatible OpenStorage pool is required, which is included with the Data Protection Optimization Add-on
license.
The use of NetBackup Accelerator with third-party OpenStorage devices require that the OpenStorage partner
provides a qualified plug-in. OST plug-ins are typically available asynchronously from the NetBackup release.
Be sure to check that the OpenStorage device is qualified for NetBackup Accelerator support before quoting
Data Protection Optimization Add-on/Option for use with third party OpenStorage devices.
For clarity, customers using third-party OpenStorage partner storage devices that have deduplication
capabilities, like EMC Data Domain, that want to take advantage of the NetBackup Accelerator performance
advantages, must licensing the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on or Option.

PureDisk Storage Pool & High Availability

The NetBackup PureDisk Storage Pool can be configured for high availability using Storage Foundation and
Veritas Cluster Server. There are no additional licenses required to access these features. Customers
licensing NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on capacity are entitled to deploy this software as part
of their PureDisk storage pool configuration. The software code for Storage Foundation for Linux and Veritas
Cluster Server is included with the download packages and media.

Notes:

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on DOES NOT requires an Enterprise Disk
(OpenStorage) license.
NetBackup PureDisk Deduplication Option has its own media kit available.
NetBackup Media Server Deduplication Option does not require additional software and is fully
integrated with NetBackup.

Platform Base Licensing with Automatic Image Replication (AIR) Feature

The Auto Image Replication feature is a part of the Storage Lifecycle Policies feature and requires the
Enterprise Disk license and, where appropriate, the Data Protection Optimization Add-on license, for both the
source and target domains.
Automatic Image Replication helps manage copies of data rather than the front end production data and a
customer can have as many copies of that front end data as needed without incurring additional capacity
charges. For example, if the Automatic Image Replication target domain is a dedicated DR site then under the
FETB licensing model there is no charge for the target domain licenses.
Data Protection Optimization and Enterprise Disk licensing is based on front-end terabytes. The Automatic
Image Replication feature is only supported using the Data Protection Optimization Add-on to duplicate
backups between domains. Other than either the Platform Base - Complete Edition or Platform Base - NDMP
Edition, there are no additional capacity licensing costs for the target domain in an Automatic Image
Replication deployment.
Additionally, if both the source and target domains are production domains where backups are made they
must both be licensed for the respective FETB capacity they protect. For a Cold DR Site, reference the Cold
DR Licensing Policy section in this guide.
The use of NetBackup Automatic Image Replication with third-party OpenStorage (OST) devices require that
the OpenStorage partner provides a qualified plug-in supporting the feature. OST plug-ins are typically
available asynchronously from the NetBackup release. Be sure to check that the OpenStorage device is
qualified for NetBackup Automatic Image Replication.

The NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option consists of two purchased license components. The first is the
Key Management Server (KMS) for centralized and secure key management. A minimum of one Key
Management Server is required. The second component is the Media Server Encryption license. One Media
Server Encryption license is required for each NetBackup Media or SAN media server which will encrypt data.
The MSEO KMS can be installed on a NetBackup system (typically the master) or can be running on a system
not running NetBackup.
The Media Server Encryption Option is not included in the NetBackup Platform per Terabyte licensing model,
but may be added by purchasing it for each media server it will run on, plus the MSEO Key Management
Server license. MSEO may only be used for tape drives and should not be proposed for LTO4, LTO5 and
T10000 tape drives.
In contrast, the NetBackup KMS can be used to provide encryption keys for LTO4/5, TS1120/30/40 and T10000B/C
tape drives. The tape drive vendor may require a separate license to enable the encryption functionality on the tape
drive, but a customer does not need to purchase the tape drive vendor's key management server to manage the
tape drive keys, NetBackup KMS would the key management. The NetBackup KMS manages keys on a per
domain basis. There is no charge for using the NetBackup KMS.

Licensing for NetBackup RealTime server is the same as with the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization
Add-on, and is based on the amount of front-end data to be protected on source systems by the RealTime
server. This is the only licensing required for RealTime to operate as a standalone product.
When sold as an add-on to an existing NetBackup environment, the RealTime server acts as a snapshot

Traditional Licensing Calculation Steps

1. Determine the number and type of clients to be protected:
a. Number of servers that will require the Standard Client
b. Number of servers that will require the Enterprise Client. For each server determine the operating
system and number of processor sockets. To determine the correct server tier please refer to the
NetBackup Hardware Tier Matrix
c. Determine how many servers with applications and databases will need to be protected and on
what systems these reside. Determine is SAP application will be protected. For each server
determine the operating system and number of processor sockets. To determine the correct server
tier please refer to the NetBackup Hardware Tier Matrix
2. Determine the Core Infrastructure components:
a. Will the customer use NetBackup Enterprise Server or NetBackup Server.
b. For each server determine the operating system and number of processor sockets. To determine
the correct server tier please refer to the NetBackup Hardware Tier Matrix
3. Determine if the NetBackup Deduplication Option will be used.
a. Determine the amount of front-end terabytes to be protected
4. Determine the Disk-based infrastructure components:
a. Determine if any VTL or Deduplicating disk appliance will be in the environment. Determine the
amount of front-end terabytes to be protected
5. Determine the Tape-based infrastructure components:
a. Determine how many physical tape drives will be used if they will be shared
b. Determine how many tape drives will require vaulting
6. Determine the other Infrastructure Components:
a. Media Server Encryption Option - Determine the number of Enterprise Server and/or SAN Media
Servers that require MSEO or KMS encryption. Those that require MSEO, identify for each server
the operating system and number of processor sockets. With this information, determine the
respective server tier.
b. NDMP Option - Determine the number of NDMP-enabled NAS requiring protection. Determine the
Tier NAS device.
7. Determine if OpsCenter Analytics is required
a. Determine the number of servers for which reporting is required

For example, if two NetBackup Master Servers protect single physical client box, two client licenses are
required. Additionally, if two NetBackup Master Servers are configured in single physical server box, two
licenses are required.
NetBackup Standard Client
The NetBackup Standard Client license is used to protect systems that function as servers. A system
provides services to more than one user and is considered a group or company resource controlled by a
system administrator, Information System organization, or similar.
This license entitles customers to protect a server with a traditional NetBackup client (LAN-based backup). A
standard client license also entitles customers to use either Bare Metal Restore or NetBackup Client
Encryption capabilities.
Note: Bare Metal Restore and NetBackup Client Encryption cannot be used together.

Notes:

Major platforms supported by the Standard Client include Windows, UNIX, Linux, Solaris x64,
OpenVMS, Mac OS X, NetWare and Free BSD. For specific platforms and versions. Refer to the
NetBackup OS Compatibility Guide for more information.
NetBackup Client support for Red Hat Linux and SUSE Linux on IBMs zSeries is licensed per virtual
machine.
Open File Support - No additional licenses or costs are required to protect files while open or in use.

The NetBackup Standard Client license entitles a customer to install and use a NetBackup Standard Client for
use with the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option.

Virtualization Environments - Virtual Machines

All methods of virtual machines (VM) backup are included in the Traditional Licensing model which includes:

NetBackup for VMware

NetBackup for Hyper-V
Any NetBackup client or agent within a VM
Any other supported backup method of a VM

The NetBackup licensing model does not require the licensing of individual virtual machines (VM), but for the
physical host on which the protected VMs reside. One or more licenses are needed for each physical host
machine as described in the table below. When a protected VM is copied, moved, or otherwise transferred
between physical hosts, each participating physical host must be licensed, e.g. clustering, load-balancing,
replication, etc.

Core Infrastructure Components

NetBackup Servers
There are two key server licensing components: Enterprise Server and NetBackup Server. The NetBackup
Enterprise Server includes a complete set of supported features whereas the NetBackup Server provides with
less licensed functionality. The clients, option, and agents are designed to work with both versions of
NetBackup except for the NetBackup Enterprise Client, which is only available with NetBackup Enterprise
Server.
Organizations that decide to access more advanced features can easily upgrade to a NetBackup Enterprise
Server. New functionality is enabled by license key and doesnt require any additional application upgrades.
The features supported by server type are identified in the following table.

NetBackup Enterprise Server

Enterprise Server contains the code for both the Master and Media Server. NetBackup Master and Media
Server pricing is based on the tier of the machine, not the number of domains that the machine is running. The
tier of the machine is determined by the number of populated processor sockets on the machine. Customers
purchase 1 license, despite the number of domains the machine is running. The only current exceptions are
the IBM SP series and HP EPS.

[1]

Media Server Encryption Option can technically be used with NBU Server, but the recommended
architecture normally requires multiple Media servers and would therefore require an Enterprise Server license.

and Licensing guide section for more information.
Server Environment Licensing Considerations
Blade Servers
NetBackup components (Servers, Clients, Agents, and Options) are licensed per physical system. Therefore,
each blade server will require separate NetBackup licenses. NetBackup is not licensed per rack of servers.
Cluster Environments
NetBackup licenses (servers, clients, agents, and options) are required for all nodes of a cluster. However,
customers are entitled to install and use one additional copy of the licensed software per the conditions set
forth in the Cold Disaster Recovery Licensing Policy.
The Master/Media Server in a NetBackup Server (two tier) configuration is only supported in a clustered
environment on Windows and using Veritas Cluster Server or Microsoft Cluster Server. (In this case only one
NetBackup Server license is required for the active node.) However, NetBackup Clients, Options, and Agents
that are attached to a NetBackup Server are supported in a clustered environment using the same clustering
combinations supported with NetBackup Enterprise Server.

products.
Disk-Based Infrastructure Components
Basic Disk
Basic disk backup in NetBackup is available at no additional charge and does not require an additional license.
Basic Disk backup can be used for backing up to a basic disk storage unit or for temporary staging of data
before writing it to tape. Please take note that Storage Lifecycle policies cannot be used with Basic Disk.
The backup protection of non-Symantec storage devices that is performing deduplication, like Data Domain,
configured as a mounted or shared storage e.g., CIFS/NFS, requires an Enterprise Disk license with the total
number of respective front-end terabytes being protected. With the purchase of Enterprise Disk, the customer
has access to more data protection features.

Enterprise Disk Option

In addition to providing high-performance disk backup for VTLs and OpenStorage (OST) enabled storage
devices and appliances, Enterprise Disk Option enables other advanced features such as Storage Lifecycle
Policies, Advanced Disk, Media Server Load Balancing, and Intelligent Disk Capacity Management, based on
type of disk media.
Licensing is based on the amount of source front-end data to be protected. A front-end terabyte is defined as
the aggregate amount of data on the client machines measured as the current largest aggregate full.

NetBackup OpenStorage (OST)

The OpenStorage disk feature enables advanced access and control of qualified third-party intelligent disk
devices (typically appliances). Hardware appliance vendors provide a software OST plug-in that conforms to
the NetBackup OpenStorage API and enables communication between NetBackup and the vendor device.
These must be qualified by Symantec to be supported. The exact functionality offered by each vendor will vary
based on what they have written into their OST plug-in.
An example of functionality provided by the OpenStorage Disk feature is the integration with NetBackup
through a popular feature called OpenStorage Optimized Duplication. With OpenStorage Optimized
Duplication, NetBackup is able to manage and control the duplication of backups written to an OST disk device
using the intelligent disk devices native replication capabilities. Data moves directly between OST disk devices.
The NetBackup catalog remains aware of both the primary and remote backups stored on the OST disk
devices. Backup retentions are maintained through the normal backup lifecycle process.

All Standard Disk customers with active maintenance are entitled to upgrade to Enterprise Disk 7.5.

NetBackup Shared Storage Option

NetBackup Shared Storage Option dynamically shares individual tape drives, standalone or in a robotic tape
library, among multiple NetBackup Media Servers and/or NDMP hosts (servers). These servers can be a
NetBackup Master Server, NetBackup Media Server, or NetBackup SAN Media Server.
NetBackup Shared Storage Option is licensed per shared tape drive, regardless of the manufacturer, type of
device, or number of NetBackup Servers attached to the SAN. Sharing of each physical tape drive among
NetBackup Media Servers and/or NDMP hosts (servers) requires an SSO license for that tape drive. The
NetBackup Shared Storage Option license is in addition to any required NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive
licenses. If the shared tape drive is not included in a tape library, then only a Share Storage Option license is
required. The Shared Storage Option is not needed when used with the NetBackup Virtual Tape Option.
Product Description

License

NetBackup Shared Storage Option

Per Shared Drive

Note: NetBackup Shared Storage Option maintains an open support policy for all SAN equipment. To ensure
reliability and performance, all servers must recognize the drives, via the SAN, before installation of NetBackup
software.

NetBackup for NDMP

NetBackup for NDMP provides reliable, high-performing backup and recovery services to tape or disk for
NDMP-enabled devices. One NetBackup for NDMP license is required for each NDMP-enabled NAS requiring
protection. NetBackup Enterprise Server and NetBackup Server can scale to protect an unlimited number of
NDMP-enabled NAS devices.
Some NDMP devices have multiple heads (sometimes called data movers or controllers). This is taken into
account in the tier listing. Please refer to the examples and notes for additional information.

Licensing and Pricing Guide

NetBackup 7.5

Example 1:

A NetApp FAS3050c has two clustered heads with only one active controller. A single NDMP Tier 3
license is required. If both controllers are active a single NDMP Tier 4 license is required.

Example 2:

An EMC NS84 has four data movers (according to EMC, the last digit is the number of data movers). A
single NDMP Tier 4 license is required.

Licensing is per NDMP NAS (host) regardless of the configuration (local, 3-way, or Remote NDMP). For
example, if a customer has 5 NDMP-enabled NAS devices that require backup or restore services from
NetBackup, 5 NetBackup for NDMP licenses would be required.
A small number of tape libraries also implement NDMP (use of this capability was more common prior to
NetBackup adding SSO support for NDMP in NetBackup 6.0) and these also require a NDMP license.
NDMP licenses are also required when using NetBackup managed NAS snapshots. When NetBackup is used
to manage NAS snapshots, the NDMP host on which the snapshots are taken requires the appropriately tiered
NDMP license.
When NDMP is only used for duplication of backup images, such as with the VTL direct-to-tape or OST to tape,
there is no need to purchase a NDMP license as that NDMP functionality is already enabled within NetBackup

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is designed to provide a set of NetBackup features geared
towards enhancing data protection strategy by optimizing storage requirements, network bandwidth usage,
impact on client systems etc. This is an aggregated license that provides features listed below.
NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication Features
All intelligent deduplication features provided by NetBackup are part of the NetBackup Data Protection
Optimization Option license. Starting in NetBackup 7.5, the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option
replaces the NetBackup Deduplication Option. Customers who have NetBackup Deduplication Option from
previous NetBackup versions are entitled to use the same quantity of the new Data Protection Optimization
Option licenses at no additional cost in both traditional and platform per terabyte licensing models.
Enterprise Disk Option Considerations
For customers using traditional licensing model, NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option includes
many features that are normally available through Enterprise Disk Option. Specifically, customers can make
use of NetBackup Storage Life Cycle Policies, NetBackup Media Server Load Balancing, NetBackup
OpenStorage connectivity and NetBackup Cloud-store connectivity.
NetBackup Accelerator Feature
The NetBackup Accelerator feature is included in the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option license.
The NetBackup Accelerator feature requires sending backups to a disk pool that supports NetBackup
Optimized Synthetics technology. A NetBackup intelligent deduplication pool, NetBackup Cloud-store pool or
compatible OpenStorage pool is required, which is included with the Data Protection Optimization Add-on
license.
Determining License Quantity
You will need the following information to determine license quantity:

Number of servers / systems to be protected

Number of applications / databases and tier of machine on which each one runs
Amount of front-end terabytes to be protected
Estimated growth rate in source data

In traditional licensing model, licensing NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is identical to licensing
a NetBackup environment such that Symantec licenses for a client component and an infrastructure
component are required.

NetBackup 7.5

Licensing for clients and database and applications is identical to NetBackup. Symantec requires a Standard
or Enterprise Client license for every protected system. Licensing for the infrastructure component, the
NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option, is based on the amount of front-end data to be protected on
source systems (front-end terabyte). If a media server is used as part of the configuration, a NetBackup
Enterprise Server or NetBackup Server license is required.
Data Protection Optimization Option for use with third party OpenStorage devices.
For clarity, customers using third-party OpenStorage partner storage devices that have deduplication
capabilities, like EMC Data Domain, that want to take advantage of the NetBackup Accelerator performance
advantages, must licensing the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option.
Calculating Front-End Terabyte Capacity
A front-end terabyte is defined as the total aggregate amount of data on Clients or Devices on which
NetBackup is installed or for which NetBackup is used to provide backup functionality.
This is similar to
how deduplication was licensed in previous releases of NetBackup High Availability with Veritas Cluster Server
The NetBackup PureDisk Storage Pool can be configured for high availability using Storage Foundation and
Veritas Cluster Server. There are no additional licenses required to access these features. When a customer
licenses NetBackup Deduplication Option capacity, they are entitled to deploy this software as part of their
PureDisk storage pool configuration. The software code for Storage Foundation for Linux and Veritas Cluster
Server is included with the download packages and media.

NetBackup 7.5

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization includes components from Enterprise Disk (OpenStorage) and
there does not require a separate Enterprise Disk license. This license enables Storage Lifecycle
Policies and Media Server Load Balancing features.

NetBackup Replication Director Option

NetBackup Replication Director Option provides unified, policy-based management of backups, snapshots and
replication. Replication Director is licensed by front-end terabytes (FETB) being protected. One NetBackup
Replication Director license is required for every front-end terabyte that is protected with array-based
snapshots and/or replication.
Any related use of Snapshot Client capabilities is included in the licensing, and does not require an Enterprise
Client license. The transfer of duplicated copies of snapshots to other locations and devices for backup or
disaster recovery may require the respective license, e.g., Library Based Tape Drive, Enterprise Disk (AIR).

Licensing Considerations with Automatic Image Replication (AIR)

The Automatic Image Replication feature is a part of the Storage Lifecycle Policies feature and requires the
Enterprise Disk license and, where appropriate, the Data Protection Optimization option license, for both the
source and target domains.
Customers, under the Standard licensing policy, are required to purchase the applicable infrastructure licenses
for the master and media servers in the source and target domains for using Automatic Image Replication.
Licensing for the target domain is required even if that domain is a dedicated Disaster Recovery domain. This
is because the target domain master and media servers must be active at all times and are not in idle mode
as mandated by the cold Disaster Recovery policy.
If the Automatic Image Replication target domain is a dedicated Disaster Recovery site then under the Platform
Base licensing model there is no charge for the target domain licenses. Automatic Image Replication image
volume is not included in FETB capacity sizing since a customer may have any number of copies of the
protected data as needed, without incurring extra charges. This is an incentive for using the platform license
model.
Data Protection Optimization Option and Enterprise Disk Option licensing is based on front-end terabytes, so
there is no additional cost for these licenses on the target domain. All other infrastructure licenses including
servers, library tape drives and shared storage option are required in the target domain in all cases.

Tape Infrastructure Components

NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive
NetBackup support for physical tape drives controlled by a robotic library is licensed per physical tape drive;
regardless of the manufacturer, type of device, or number of servers attached to the library. There is no charge
for stand-alone, non-robotic tape drives directly attached to a NetBackup Master/Media Server or NetBackup
Server. Refer to the Enterprise Disk Option for licensing of virtual tape libraries (VTLs).

NetBackup Virtual Tape Feature

NetBackup Virtual Tape feature enables support for 3rd party virtual tape offerings.
Supports unlimited number of virtual tape drives
Includes sharing of virtual tape drives; no SSO license required

A list of NetBackup supported virtual tape libraries can be located on the NetBackup Device and Library
Compatibility Matrix: http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support.
NetBackup Vault
NetBackup Vault requires a license for each physical tape drive in physical tape libraries used as the source or
destination for Vaulting. NetBackup Vault is licensed per NetBackup Storage Domain (i.e., one NetBackup
Enterprise Master Server or NetBackup Server) and includes four NetBackup Vault physical tape drive licenses.
If more than four physical tape drives are used in the libraries for deduplication pruposes, a NetBackup Vault
Additional Drive license would be required for each drive. A NetBackup Vault Unlimited Drive license provides
support for unrestricted number of drives per NetBackup Storage Domain.
The new Storage Lifecycle Policy feature can be used for duplicating backup images from one tape library to
another one, instead of using NetBackup Vault for duplication. If this is done, only the physical tape drives in
the library ejecting tapes to be sent off-site and managed by NetBackup Vault would require NetBackup Vault
tape drive licenses.

The unlimited drive SKU includes the base NetBackup Vault license
ALL physical tape drives in a library used for vaulting require a NetBackup Vault license

When a VTL is the primary NetBackup storage and a customer wishes to run a duplication job to physical tape
for offsite storage, the customer must have an appropriate tape drive licenses.
NetBackup Vault Additional Drive licenses are not required when only one copy of the backup is being created
and vaulted.
License Example
A customer either uses NetBackup Vault to duplicate backup images from a VTL to a 10-drive physical tape
library or uses Storage Lifecycle Polices to perform backup image duplication, but uses NetBackup Vault to
track tapes sent off-site. This would require a NetBackup Vault Base license and six NetBackup Vault
Additional Drive licenses.

customer has over 24 physical tape drives that will be used for vaulting purposes.

OpsCenter Analytics Option

There are two packages of OpsCenter; Standard and Analytics. The Standard OpsCenter functionality and
reports are included with all NetBackup licensing. The customer is able deploy OpsCenter within their
environment as needed.
The base OpsCenter product and applicable support is available for customers who have a valid NetBackup
license and corresponding support contract. Not support will be provided customer without a valid NetBackup
license.
OpsCenter Analytics Option is builds on the OpsCenter standard features. OpsCenter Analytics enables
advanced reporting capabilities such as a custom report builder and the ability to write custom SQL queries on
the OpsCenter database. Furthermore, OpsCenter Analytics enables customer to access the entire history of
their backup information. The base OpsCenter product limits customers to a 60 day window into their backup
history.
Determining License Quantity
An OpsCenter Analytics license is required for every physical client with an active backup policy. The client
count should include all hosts which may include master and media servers as well if they are being backed up.
The rule of thumb is that if you are backing it up, you need an OpsCenter Analytics client to report on it.
OpsCenter Analytics for Enterprise Vault license is required for reporting on Enterprise Vault. This license is to
align the licensing with how Enterprise Vault is licensed which is per user. There is no entitlement to existing
users of OpsCenter Analytics since this is a unique offering.
With the release of NetBackup 7.5, OpsCenter Analytics includes license deployment reporting for the
NetBackup Platform per Terabyte Licensing Model. Refer to the NetBackup Platform per Terabyte Licensing
Model section for more information.
Quoting Examples
Please follow standard Symantec quoting and discount approval processes. No manual orders or discount
approval overrides will be accepted outside of the standard Symantec policies and procedures.

on one or more media servers in each NetBackup domain that needs to be indexed. The following graphic
illustrates the new NetBackup Search components introduced in the NetBackup 7.5 release.

Determining License Quantity

NetBackup Search license is required for every client that can be searched. Searchable clients are identified
by OpsCenter using the data collection process across multiple NetBackup domains. All identified searchable
clients must be licensed. This licensed count from the license key (e.g., License Limit), is reconciled against
the clients indexed (eg., Current Usage) and is displayed in the Search and Hold tab in OpsCenter.
The following are data types NetBackup can search:

All Windows based file systems including VMware & Hyper-V backups
All Unix/Linux based file systems including VMware & Hyper-V backups

The NetBackup Search license includes OpsCenter Analytics. A cross-grade SKU is available for current
OpsCenter Analytics customers who would like to utilize the value of their OpsCenter licenses towards the
purchase of NetBackup Search.
The index servers for NetBackup Search do not require a license to install and perform indexing. However, a
media server is required as the index server must be installed on an existing or new Media Server.

Cold Disaster Recovery Licensing Policy

Customers are entitled to install and use one additional copy of the licensed software as a Cold Disaster
Recovery License on a Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment located at a Cold Disaster Recovery Site as part of
a cluster of production servers. The requirements for such installation and use are:

The product, product version and duration of the Cold Disaster Recovery license and the underlying
production license of the must be identical.
The right to use the Cold Disaster Recovery Licenses will automatically terminate if the customers is
fails to stay current on maintenance for the underlying licensed software.
With the exception of Failover Readiness Testing, for up to twelve days per calendar year, the Cold
Disaster Recovery Licenses cannot be used simultaneously with the production licenses
The Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment on which Cold Disaster Recovery Licenses are deployed must
be turned off or remain idle except for: use in the case of an actual Disaster; or use in the case when a
production server in a cluster of servers fails and production work is failed-over to a designated cold
or idle server that is part of the cluster in conjunction with an actual Disaster or as part of a test.
In the event of an actual Disaster, the Cold Disaster Recovery License may be used in production for a
period of up to ninety successive calendar days. At the conclusion of such period, if the production site
has not been restored, the customer must request Symantec in writing for a transfer of the production
license to the Disaster Recovery Site in accordance with Symantecs then-current transfer policies.
Fees may be applicable to any such transfers.

Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment or Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment means a server, processor or
device that has the Cold Disaster Recovery license installed and configured but is either turn-off or is idle. An
idle or passive mode and configuration refers to the server in a high availability cluster that has database
and/or applications installed, but are not servicing user transactions or query workloads during periods of
normal operation.
Cold Disaster Recovery License or Cold Disaster Recovery License means a copy of the licensed software
deployed on Cold Disaster Recovery Equipment granted by Symantec for the sole purpose of use by a
customer in accordance with the requirements described above in the event of a Disaster.

Upgrade Paths
Current NetBackup Customers
Current customers receive an automatic notification email and letter that announces the availability of a new
version and provides the serial number needed to register at the Customer Care License Portal. Customer
Care should be able to help customers who did not receive this notification.
The preferred download method from FileConnect is the managed download. This is the better option because
the download can resume if interrupted. The http download will restart the download process.
If your customer has any issues generating their license keys at the License Portal please pro-actively help by
working with customer care. The NetBackup business team substantially streamlined NetBackup 7.5 licensing
so your customer may likely have questions.

NetBackup Server Upgrade to NetBackup Enterprise Server

NetBackup Server and NetBackup Enterprise Server software share a common set of NetBackup Clients,
Options and Agents. These common components have been consolidated into a single NetBackup license,
price, and SKU set.
In the event an organization requires advanced snapshot-based, SAN, and data center scalability solutions, a
NetBackup Server investment can be seamlessly upgraded to a NetBackup Enterprise Server solution. To
perform this seamless transition, only the backup server license will require an upgrade.

Basic Support is for small businesses that need consistent, basic support with timely software updates.
Customers include small offices and home offices with a limited number of users, running a single server with
one or to Symantec products licensed where continuous uptime is not required. No IT activity is likely to take
place after regional business hours.

Extended Support
Extended Support is for businesses that have an increased need for uninterrupted availability of their data and
require around-the-clock support. These customers are usually single-location, homogeneous environments
that run workgroup servers and multiple database together with Symantec products. IT activity during off-hours
is limited.

Additional NetBackup Information

The NetBackup support page at Symantec Support includes a set of useful links to documentation, upgrades,
tools and statuses. It is recommended to access this page frequently.

Evaluations and Trialware

Symantec provides prospects the opportunity to evaluate NetBackups industry leading data protection
features at no charge. An evaluation license key is good for 60 day with an optional 30 day extension available.
A single NetBackup 7.5 Evaluation Media Kit will contain both NetBackup Enterprise Server and NetBackup
Server software.
Evaluation keys in NetBackup can be added to any existing production environment to "add" new features for a
60 day test period. After the 60 or 30 days are over the key expires and the features go away just past
midnight the last day they were valid.
