Numerical analysis technology has been widely developed as an important tool in engineering design due to the
low cost and rapid development of computer technology. In addition, the advancement of Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) technologies is also remarkable.
A variety of new analytical techniques of flow models have been proposed and now being applied to complicated flow analysis.
Coanda-effect screen as an intake structure which can be considered an alternative for regular intakes for
small hydro power plants in the mountain streams. The most important part of the structure is the design of the
area of the opening and the slope of the downstream face of the coanda-effect screen.
Flow through a Coanda-effect screen structure can be modeled using the energy equation, accounting for
the changing discharge along the length of the screen. Discharge through each slot of a tilted-wire screen will be
modeled, to show a velocity vector approaching a single slot opening. The target is to provide detailed information
on the flow depths and velocities along the length of the screen, on the numerical model with unit discharge
quantities.
The assumption is that based on the value of variable geometric parameters of lamellar profiles in the water intake structure with Coanda-effect screen, obtained by numerical calculations can determine their optimal
values with varying the free flow of water.
Knowledge of the high-screen capacity may permit the use of a structure with a shorter crest or lower drop
height, which may yield economic savings or make a structure feasible at a site with limited available head or
restricted construction space.
In this paper, the authors intruduces applications of the latest flow analysis technologes to the design of the
coanda-effect screen structures and demonstrates the reliability and economy of the two and three-dimensional
flow analysis technologies.
Two-dimensional flow simulation in coanda-effect screen structure can be accurately carried out by instroduction of the flow analysis technologies.
The performance and appearance of the flow through coanda-effect screen model in the initial design stage are
obtained by computational results. From these results, the initial design can be evaluated and any redisign for the
next stage can be drawn.
The accumulation of such analytical technologies and computation environments will contribute to building a
more reliable tool for coanda-effect screen structure design.
As a quantative design tool, the improvement of analysis technologies and the improvement of analytical accuracy
and reliability is an important topic for the future.
The mission of the design tool is to point the way for design improvement by analyzing performance defects of the coanda-effect screens. We intend to advance both utility and analytical techniologies aiming at the
achivement of the higher level CFD technology, by which the design can be completed through Numerical
experimentation without relying on the model test.
